I had a 07 pontiac torrent that was a nightmare we had no heat in the front vents so we had it inspected and they said just to replace the thermostat well it was more than that we did the thermostat the heater core changed the coolant also the water pump and still no heat and everytime on start up you could hear like water swooshing inside the engine. Well after we did all that I checked that coolant like a month after that and it was like gel so took it back to a mechanic and they said the engine head gasket was blown so we decided to replace it and everything worked for about a month then it happened again no heat in the front vents and the coolant turned to gel again! So I decided to junk that pos. I talked to a bunch of people that had the torrent and they all had the same problem no heat in the front vents and the coolant turned into gel and it was DeX cool alot of people say its sh!t coolant.

Brings back memories. My girlfriend and I were driving from Rochester to Buffalo in January when the thermostat decided to stick open after we got on the highway. By the time we got to Buffalo, were chilled to the bone, I mean it was ridiculous. First thermostat I ever changed. That was in a 86 Chevy Celebrity with a 2.8 MPFI V6, my first car. I'm surprised the ATS engine was so noisy. The 2.8L V6 was a pretty good engine. Not many problems, only the MAF went out at about 80k miles. Sold it at 120k and still going strong. The only weird thing with that engine was when you started it cold it did an idle hunt for about 2 minutes before evening out. For the life of me I could not ever figure out what was causing that.

@Don Quixote Eric moved a power seat back to take the car for a drive, then discovered the "forward" switch was broken so he couldn't put the seat back where he found it - had to pull that switch panel off, jumper in a new switch temporarily to get the seat back where it came from, etc. Beat himself up pretty fiercely on camera, calling himself all kinds of names, using profanities like "rookie mistake" and "ding dong". :-)

It was interesting to follow your diagnosis for this vehicle. Unfortunate the radiator is leaking. Not a quick change for that on a Cadallac.

Curious why the fluids are not checked first,usually no heat low coolant.

With all the computers in those things nowadays, it can be electric/computer problem as well.

I was thinking the same thing. Sometimes he pulls out and uses the scanner before checking more simpler things like actually looking under the hood for the problem (such as in this case). Using the scanner automatically before anything else can waste more time and money. Its really unnecessary at times to be honest.

Great video. Hope to see the repair video. I have to say that was a very noisy motor.

sounds like the battery needs to be replaced before the winter too.

Shoot that’s about 85 percent of America’s population now they just think that as soon as something needs done it’s “time for a new one” or they think It’s now so I don’t have to do anything to it, I see a lot more new cars with brakes squealing than older ones so what does that tell you

Has me wondering what happened at Cadillac; They used have low coolant and low oil warning.

Motor sounds like it has 150,000 miles on it!! In my experience women do not religiously change oil and filters as required. She should trade it in!! Good video Mr O!

So we have a 5 to 6 year old car with 58k miles on the clock and the radiator is bad and probably the thermostat as well. It will take 6 hours to make the repairs. Time includes lowering the bumper cover assembly to gain access to the radiator. The MSRP for entry level 2014 ATS was about $34, 000, fully loaded $50,00. Right now, a used 2014 ATS is in the 13 to $14, 000 range. So it makes sense to dump it, excuse me, "to offer it up for resale." Remember, back in the day, when you could replace a radiator and thermostat in much less than an hour. And that would include a trip to the parts store if you bought new, but the usual practice was "to send it out" for repair, much cheper than new, and of course it could actually be repaired!). Of course, there weren't many water cooled turbos back in the day, very few plastic parts and no plastic "beauty treatments to remove - you seldom were replacing radiators at 58K miles. "I didn't build it. I didn't buy it. I didn't break it" - words for a mechanic to live by. Of course, in the name of good customer relations, you have to figure out a nice way to say that to your customers.

I'd imagine your low coolant temps on your first test drive would be from a large air bubble in the cooling system
@snoopdogie1875 жыл бұрын
Those air bubbles play a ton of tricks on the temperature gauge. I drove a subaru with the EJ 2.5, and before I fixed the head gasket, on anything over a 20 minute trip, I would have to pull over to refill the cooling system. You get to learn what it looks like when there is air inside that system. Scary at first at how high the temperature appears to be until coolant starts to flow again.
@picklerix61625 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing but Eric was right to quote a thermostat. Surgeons do the same thing, they will remove your gall bladder and remove your appendix too, just to cover their butts.
@snoopdogie1875 жыл бұрын
If I was a mechanic, of course I would suggest a replacement of the thermostat if I saw anything at all to think it might be a future issue. You want to avoid any related issues to what you fixed when you send a car back to a customer, and make sure they don't come back or think you didn't do your job properly. For myself, I would do the thermostat anyway, if I was doing a radiator. It saves a lot of time for a part that is going to fail at some point in the future, and I might as well do it now, especially because they are usually cheap.
@Jlieg5 жыл бұрын
I full heartedly agree with the thermostat replacement, I'm just pointing out what the probable culprit was

I’ve always liked your videos, I’ve been a shade tree mechanic for 30 years but it’s always really interesting to see how you troubleshoot and resolve problems. It would be fun to work in your garage I think! What is making all that racket?
