Howlin Wolf was one of the only band leaders that did it right from that time period. Fair pay, insurance, paid into their SSI, and didn't allow any drugs or alcohol use when touring. According to everyone that knew him, he was fiercely loyal to his wife. Who do you know these days that all of that is true of?

I knew nothing of the blues and never even heard the name Howlin Wolf til I saw this movie, then I started listening to his songs and came across Spoonful, good lord this guy had a voice that was just unreal. I've gotten into a lot of great older blues musicians over the last year but Howlin Wolf is definitely my favorite. You can truly feel the power and emotion through his voice, it's really something special!

This scene portrays him accurately because after I re-watched a documentary about Howlin' Wolf a while back, I've learned that Wolf was verbally assertive and fiercely aggressive when it came letting people know who was in charge and not only that.. he also made sure everyone knew how to be & play in a band 🐺

He was definitely tough, but he was also equally fiercely loyal to his men when they followed his rules, seeing that they had health insurance, retirement, good pay, the whole nine yards. No one would ever want to get on his bad side, but if you stayed on his good side, you couldn't dream of having a better boss.

It was a nice story for the movie, but as the other reply mentioned, that was actually lifted from the Robert Johnson mythos, the origin of which by the way was none other than Son House. Wolf himself never made such a claim, as he was a devoutly Christian man who would never agree to have any such story about him.

Actual audio confirms that Howlin Wolf told Hubert to keep it right where it was. Also he threatened to turn Adrian Brody's nose into a hat, told the dude with the gun to use it if he felt 'lucky', and told the girl she was slipping down the block right in front of his eyes. Savage.

If you get a chance to watch the documentary "Standing in the Shadow of Motown", this is how the music business was back then. There's a scene where the piano player is describing a poker game where everyone slaps their pistols down on the table. Hilarious, but tense!

I love Muddy but he had nothin' on Chester Burnett. The Wolf not only had the voice everyone wanted, he also had the guitar player everyone wanted. Hubert Sumlin. He played it just like The Wolf wanted it. Fingers only and plenty loud. The world will never see such wonderful musicians like these again.

The guitar amplifier was meant to act up. It produces the effect we all heard today. Rough and grungy. And Hownlin' Wolf's voice is an evolution that's ahead of his time. It's emotional. It's powerful! Even while typing this, I'm listening to his music. Moanin' at Midnight.
