Never realized so many Europeans were into 70's/80's American iron, I keep finding these videos. Good job documenting obscure GM history. In the states these cars were thrown away with a look of disgust when fwd cars replaced them, its nice to see people who care for them.

There was someone here that somehow converted a TPI with custom runners from a chevy 350 to work with this engine using the stock injectors. It looked very strange as the Chevy engine is somewhat narrower, but it did work.

That kind of a TQ increase from 30" intake runners would probably suit the Olds 350 well. Olds heads are better than the typical smogger 350sbc head of the late 70s.

Back in the late 1980's, My sister had a 1977 Seville that had been converted to a carburetor. They likely changed the intake manifold because the car ran really well with the carburetor. The funny thing about that Caddy was.... it had so much rust on it, if you pressed down on the rear bumper, you would see wrinkles form in the padded vinyl roof.

Since OEM parts are so scarce I feel that theoretically you could buy a 350 carb or EFI manifold from Edelbrock add a Holley 450 style throttle body and use some form of standalone ECU or just buy the Sniper EFI from Holley. While I'm the type of guy to do the most to keep as much of the OEM parts as possible, I get why some people just do a carb conversion all together. Great video BTW, I love how KZbin keeps recommending channels like yours.

Yeah, the Sniper EFI on a carb intake since it's TBI and wet flow unlike port injection and a dual sync distributor to give the cam signal and handle ignition would probably work well or just a carb, intake and a HEI if you can tune it, a Holley 600 vac sec should be nearly spot on for an engine that size out of the box, unless the quality has slipped. The last few I bought were perfect on a Ford 360FE and a 351w.

I converted my rebuilt "back-up" engine to carburetion, as seen in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXvbi2V6e9xpq5I Or here's my playlist "Olds 350 Engine Rebuild Series": kzbin.info/aero/PLI_FfrTjVxphAlT4lcujJLd-LbBrpOsK1 I want to keep my Seville as original as possible, but I know that if some parts break, finding a replacement won't be easy, cheap or fast. Thank you very much for your feedback!

Hello, I wonder if have converted your engine from MPFI back to regular carburetion? As you correctly stated, parts are almost impossible to get. The only reliable source may be Rockauto, but I think, they don't have everything you may need to fix this system. Please let me know. Btw, I am in Austria, too!

Halli hallo! The FI has not failed me yet, and in my parts car it was actually the ECU that failed. I am a rockauto customer since day 1, bacl when I got my car and you are right, you can't get lots of parts for the FI-System, so I hope that the parts you can't get, are the ones that never fail to work correctly - fingers crossed! The engine in the car is still with FI, but I rebuilt another engine and converted that one back to carburetion. I hope that helps and if you've got more questions, i'd love to answer them!

The problem is that Cadillac wasted a fortune on the HT4100, 4.5, 4.9 that was a massive blunder and I see those engines, the 307, fwd and the troublesome Northstar as killing the brand. Only the Escalade, CUVs and performance -V cars have kept the brand afloat. They should have kept the Buick 350 or Olds 350 gas around with SMPI in the 80s, I think Buick might have been a better choice since the V6s got this tech, are the same bore spacing and family as the V8s and they were a very light compact V8. The Buick 350 was sort of like the small bore, long stroke, cathedral port LS of it's day made of all iron. They could have had a much better engine, especially if they went to aluminum heads and intakes on the V8 to allow more compression on pump gas making the engine more efficient and even lighter. They could have even built a Turbo Buick V8 like the 3.8L V6 or used the 3.975" bore size from the 4.1L V6 to make a 380ci light, compact, efficient, high tq engine for huge cars like Cadillac , Buick, Olds, Pontiac or even GMCs to diferentiate them from Chevy more. I never understood how only the lower tier brand Chevy Corvette, Camaro and Firebird, Trans Am V8s got the higher tech Tuned Port SMPI engine. Then GM wondered why everyone left for European or Japanese cars of extremely high quality, reliability, efficiency and power when the Olds diesel, HT4100, a carburated 307, TBI 305 or low tech Buick V6 was all that was on offer in the big expensive cars until 1991 when the 350 Chevrolet was offered in luxury cars again, after it was too late and it was the low tech TBI version instead if the L98 TPI that made 250hp and 350tq that didn't rev over 5000rpms, perfect for a big heavy car or truck.

Thank you for sharing such an in-depth analysis, I really appreciate your comment! Your insights into GM's engine choices over the years offer a compelling perspective on the brand's evolution. It's fascinating to consider the potential alternatives, and how they could have shaped Cadillac's performance and reputation. Your knowledge of automotive history is impressive!

No, I do not. I'm not that into diesel engines, and especially those olds 350 diesel engines don't have a good reputation.
