The 16Gb + 4 Gb RAM is an issue. Its called 'dual channel memory' for a reason. The 2 sticks work/dance with each other...if they are not same...its not same performance. Even mixing same size ram from separate boxes/brands can be an issue fyi. Basically, the right way to do it, is you should have thrown old ram stick, and installed 2 x 8gb sticks if that client wanted 16gb. Client doesn't know better what 'dual channel memory' is.
@jakeanthony13153 жыл бұрын
So I have the same set up, so I don’t want to just throw in a 16gb? What will it do ?
@yeshuabinyankee50173 жыл бұрын
@@jakeanthony1315 It will work, just the motherboard won't be using the total RAM 16+4=20GB to its max capacity (as it would for 2x8GB sticks). Only 4GB will be used in dual mode, the extra ram will be used sporadically when needed in single channel mode. Adding a second 16GB stick should improve performance exponentially (if the motherboard is able to use it - you can read your mobo's manual online to better understand)

Thank you for your instructive video on upgrading RAM and storage for Dell 5575. I'm upgrading a machine that I've used for 2 years - it currently has a 1 TB mechanical hard drive w/around 600 GB of data used. My goal is to add 256 gb SSD to make the machine faster. Appreciate if you would comment on the sequence of actions you would suggest for a machine like this... Curious what you'll say about backing up files before this happens and where the operating system will go... would you aim to remove partitions, etc. So far I've just backed up all my program file folders and my documents folders. I am a subscriber to your channel! Thank you, Mike
@CadillacComputerCenter3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Really all you need to back up is your user data. If your laptop has an m.2 nvme slot, your new nvme ssd will go there, install your OS to it, then reinstall your apps and programs. You can use 2.5 inch sata hdd to store data, or even install programs to it. Sounds like you have alot of data. Your OS and apps can go onto your new ssd. It will be a big project, but easily done. But yes, make sure all your data is backed up. I would remove the 1tb hdd you have now, as is, install new m.2 ssd, install windows, all updates and some of your programs. Then once you know all your data is safe. Put 2.5 inch hdd back in and format it. You may even want to consder going with a 1TB m.2 ssd. That option would allow you to do a straight up clone. They are very affordable now days. Doing the clone would be easiest method, nothing would have to be reinstalled. I have many videos on cloning, btw. Dale

@@CadillacComputerCenter thank you Dale, the 5575 has a maximum SSD card allowance of 256 gb, so while I'm intrigued about the one terabyte, doesn't look like it's possible on my machine, or am I maybe missing something? I like what you said about disconnecting the terabyte mechanical hard drive and installing the operating system. I need to learn how to make a copy of an operating system so I will look for your videos on this. Regarding backing up user data, not sure how to define user data... I have backed up all my documents and program file folders at this point. It's been mentioned by another friend that I need to know the product keys and any passwords to the programs that I will be reinstalling. If the SSD can handle 1 tb, then a complete clone sounds a lot easier!

Hi, would data be lost on the HDD when completing this process on an older 5575? If so, wWhat if I removed the HDD for the clean install and then reconnect after the clean Windows install on the SSD? Thanks!!
@CadillacComputerCenter4 жыл бұрын
Hi. That's a tricky one. You certainly can remove original hdd for the clean install on new ssd. If you reconnect hdd, and try to boot, windows boot manager may get confused. Having 2 bootable drives can be tricky. You can try it, and see which drive your computer chooses for its default boot drive. But remember, you will still have to reinstall all your apps and programs on new ssd. They wont run from the non boot hdd. I would just backup your user account on hdd first, then delete all the partitions during setup of new ssd. Dale. Just make sure you have backed up personal data first.
