Cadmium Yellow: Part 1

Never thought you could make your own cadmium yellows. In Europe these cadmiums aren't for sale anymore in the art shop.

One small tip, if you cover the jar with a cloth, the froth will not spill from jar, gas will escape from cloth, later you can wash the cloth with water for the pigments stick to jar

Relaxing :). Good old Cadmium.. Fun for all chemicst and painters ! @The Alchemical Arts Would a small bucket centrifgue might help you separte the liquids from the solids ? look forward to seeing the other colours such as red etc :)

you guys don't forget that cadmium is toxic, along with lead, chromium, etc. so don't forget your safety when making them and using them. Personally, i consider alternative non-toxic pigments so that i don't have to worry about breathing it in or getting it on my skin while i paint, or the possible contamination of surfaces and my environment.

You mentioned adding selenium to get some nice reds, etc. I've been attempting to research this and have had some problems due to the algorithm only showing quantum dots-related results. I was reading that you would need selenium selenide, but no place I've found has good instructions on how. I was able to whip up the cadmium yellow from all raw materials along with creating the sodium sulfide so I luckily feel confident about my safety for CDSE but I just can't find anything anywhere relevant to it's synthesis. If you have any info or references, please let me know! Thanks!

I will have to dig through my research, but basically elemental selenium dissolves in sodium sulfide and when you precipitate the cadmium you will get a cadmium selenium sulfide mixture that you then has to under calcination in order to get the right red. My experiments so far always fail and end up with a dirty rusty brown red. I think getting the amount of selenium right is important and getting the calcination temp perfect.

How do we make the Cadmiumnitrate? What is the weight of the sodiumsulfite added (I thought it's color is white, not yellowish)?

Very interesting and very helpful, I was wondering If it is possible to do white gouache with only lime stone (after boiling ), gum arabic and water? I use a lot of white on my paintings and if there is a way to do I would probably try it out ! thank you

2 parts by mass gum arabic, 2 parts glycerin, 4 parts water, 1 part honey, roughly. Few drops of clove oil helps it to avoid rotting longer (preservative)

Thank you for the helpful video! Can I ask how preparing your own cadmium pigment compares economically to buying bulk dry pigment from a company like Kama pigments for example? Keep up the awesome content!

If you can get your starting chemicals at a good price and you feel comfortable working with them then it is much cheaper to make your own for sure. I particular I really don't like using the sodium sulfide and cadmium nitrate needs to be handled with care but I can get both of them a a good price so I just have to plan out my preparation. Then there is also the washing and grinding of the pigment that needs to be done carefully again due to cadmium's toxicity. Stay safe and thank you for the question.

Not really an easy thing to do, the simplest way is to do a Sodium Azide / Iodide Test that would tell you that the pigment is a sulfide based pigment which would then indicated that it is most likely a Cadmium Sulfide. Testing pigments can become a complicated chemical process.

Hey, a quick question: I’d like to know which pigments are the easiest to disperse and grind with oil. It will be my second attempt to make my oil paint, first one was with german earth pigment (PBr7) which has relatively large and coarse pigment size and it ended up being a disappointment for me because no matter how much I grind and mix them the paint had a chalky, coarse texture. I want to try it again but with a more refined and easy to grind pigment this time. I’m thinking of synthetic iron oxide PR101 or PY42 but couldn’t find any information whether they are easy to mix with oil. I don’t want to invest too much money on it so I don’t consider purchasing expensive pigments like cadmium colors to avoid a second failure. Any suggestion?

I am guessing either you need a more course grind in a mortar and pestle or maybe your pigment is not pure. Try diluting the dry pigment in water, stir it around. If there is a lot of sediment at the bottom, then it isn't pure. Simply poor off the now colored water into a separate container(separating the sediment at the bottom) and let the water evaporate. When it is fully evaporated, what will be left is the pure pigment, which will now be smooth with no chalkiness. Just some recommendations. There are a lot of videos online about fine-tuning and making pigment. Earth pigments shouldn't have a chalky texture since they should be fine like clay(think about playing with clay when making pottery, your hands will be stained the dark red of the clay).

You mix the pigments with chalk and a binder and then roll them out into sticks as far as I know. I haven't made pastels before but I would like too.

@@muratnamal5471 well I just looked up the recipe in the artist hand book by Ralph Mayer, he states that a good binder is 8 fluid ounces of water and 1/3 of an ounce of Gum Tragacanth. This is then mixed with Chalk and pigments and ground into a smooth mixture and is pressed into sticks. I hope this helps, you may have to do some experimenting.
