Here's our first desert map and we're going to use the classic 7x7 block design! Also the first fishing map. Struggled a bit with population but got it there in the end. Hey GamerZakh, good stuff on the videos. This game was a childhood favourite of mine and I have fond memories of wasting many summer vacations on this game. I think there's a bug/hack in this game that you might not know--you can build more than one barrack. All you have to do is slow the game's speed to 10% and you can build close to 10 barracks. The key here is to quickly build the additional barracks before the first one is "registered" or "made permanent" (basically until you can undo the move). With this bug/hack, you can build up your army and guard towers in no time!! After you're done filling your army, you can remove the excess ones. This trick can't be used for the Hippodrome for instance (you can only build 1 per city at any game speed). So I feel this is a bug/hack that the makers intended to keep and aid people who need to build their army quickly .

Hey glad you're enjoying it! I know about the barracks hack, but I will never do that because it's so obviously cheating haha. It definitely is not intended, Caesar III just has a lot of bugs. Like a LOT of bugs! Immigration glitch, resources suddenly appearing, housing glitches, walker glitches, ghosts, and the devs never even imagined using gatehouses as roadblocks and never thought of the concept of a roadblock until players did it here, then they put it in for Pharaoh making it officially 'acceptable'. Despite how good the game is, it's got a lot of problems.

When you place more than one Market, is it superior to have them on opposite sides of the block instead of next to each other for better coverage?

Omg the intro to this mission is bonkers because one of the most shipped goods in the Roman world was a fish sauce called Garum. Fishing was hardly new to Rome by the time the Republic became the Empire. Like, it was a common and important part of Cuisine in the Mediterranean world

Remember that olive and fruit farms have a positive effect on desirability, so there's no need to put them far from your housing

Used to play this on my father's pc when I was a kid. Now I'm an adult and I bought caesar 3 on steam for the sake of nostalgia. Got stuck on this level, my father never taught me how to survive the desert levels xD

They can be really difficult for sure. Carthago is probably the hardest mission in the whole campaign for some.

I cannot tell you how much this map torments me. It looks like it should all be so straightforward but holy crap, if I see one more residence burst into flames from ACROSS THE STREET OF A PREFECTURE ONE MORE TIME I'm going to blow a gasket.

I played this game so wrong in my childhood ,i always wondered why my houses wont evolve.And i always build 1 blob i thought all have to be in one place as city.

They don't read or reply to comments directed at them, so over dozens of their comments they have refused to read or reply to points explaining how what they're saying is wrong. Even here, this is vanilla Caesar 3, not a modernised version. They're just wrong constantly. Miletus today known as muğla in Turkey but the city is the second city of Turkey on forest rate. The 70 percent of the city becomes from forest area and the game made the city as desert provence well done:)

I wish pharaoh had cute little animations like Caesar 3 does. This game was my favorite game as a child! I recently started playing it again (so much harder now that i’m older lol) so thanks so much for this play through!!!

I love pharaoh for its functionality (road blocks, more diverse ways to obtain food) and generally more diversity, but I love caesar's aesthetics more. It's unfortunate they didn't make animated cutscenes in pharaoh. Still both are great games.

Just a suggestion, would love to see a Fort design. Some kind of walled off city, like the kind in some of the Emporer levels. At any rate, keep up the excellent work!

I like these very much ! Only the time it takes for you to drop some buildings... Like a full 30 seconds hesitation to plant the legion 😂

Thanks! It's not hesitation haha, I'm planning my entire city in my head to make sure I won't be building there in the future while also considering the movement speed of troops to get to potential invasion points. A legion is probably the single most expensive thing you can put down, after the cost of the fort you have to consider the cost of the weapons and troops if you ever want to move it because they'll die, not to mention training time with a single barracks. Nothing else is as expensive or impactful with its placement.

That emigration bug occurs on hard as well, but it doesn't prompt the emigration animation. It still affects immigration but to a less degree. Occurred for me when peeps didn't wanna move in at one point. Had to demolish houses and rebuild them to flood them after it went under 200

It's a very old video, but could you explain how the two 7x7s got upgraded from just one marketplace? I thought the traders moved via routes to get to the granary the fastest. (Up until an hour in at least)

Markets have two walkers; one for grabbing food (destination walker), and one that roams freely. The one that roams walks the block, destination walkers ignore gatehouses (and roadblocks if you're using the Augustus mod) Entertainment buildings work the same way; the actual building spawns roaming walkers, while destination walkers spawn from actor colonies/gladiator schools/lion houses/chariot makers to the actual entertainment buildings Destinations have to be connected by road, only exception being "getting" warehouse workers Pro tip, this mechanic is exploitable; entertainment destination walkers provide entertainment, market distribution walkers distribute goods

I'm thinking a single large U-shape from south-west to north-east would have been more ideal on this map? Single road for all the housing, etc, with a gate separating from a section where all the industry goes. Then you'd have the single bit beyond, where you were producing oil and weapons.

took me 4 hours for normal difficulty mode. I only used the 7x7 core for housing and did not put more houses on the outside.

Why don't you set a festival for Venus? It increases mood of your citizens and might aswell prevent that glitch

It doesn't prevent that glitch, tested that. It just makes the mood go back to normal quicker once you hit 300 people. Between 200-300 people, nothing can make people happy.

Zakh why do you build these gatehouses in the city? Why don't you build roads if you want to connect two circles?

Gatehouses block wandering walkers. There are 2 types of walkers, wandering and destination. Wandering walkers are the ones that spawn and walk randomly. Destination have a specific place to go, like a market lady going to a granary. Wandering walkers are blocked but destination walkers can pass through a gatehouse. This way, you can negate any intersections, meaning every time a wandering walker spawns they 100% will cover every house in the block and never walk down the wrong way.

Hey just a quick thought as I'm watching the early stages. I know you're not too worried about perfect efficiency but I think each workshop produces around 9 units per year. So for one shield, you'd only need 2 of them to fulfill the quota.

Even though 7x7 in theory means 1 fountain, you are still forced to put more fountains on the outside of the block. Maybe you could do a 9x9 desert block next time? You just need 2 internal fountains and you can nicely fit 20 large insulaes in the block, and have a large temple on the inside of the block. I'll record a short video to show you what it looks like.

Yeah, I know technically the 7x7 and 9x9 are meant to just have housing on the inside, but I've always had extra houses round the outside for a boost in population and worker access. There's always plenty of extra room on the outside anyway.

I won this map by only small casa in the west of the map. All the way in the north there is a little farmland which you can use for oil and fruit. In the east i build some villas. Use the import Clay for the villas and dont give pottery to the plebs.

I know I've shared this on the discord city-building channel, but I'll leave it for the youtube comments as well about labor seeker walker and the mechanics about how buildings are manned. Below is the link to the discussion and finally a consensus on this matter on the heavengames forum caesar3.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/caeforumscgi/display.cgi?action=ct&f=2,6156,0,all In short, if players want to use drop in feeder's house, the number of road side houses within 2 tiles radius matters (but the type of houses doesn't), and the location of these houses matter a great deal (inside corder better than straight road side, better than outside corner, closer to the roadside the better). Buildings that don't generate service random walker (like industry, warehouse, granary, etc) usually require much closer or more roadside houses preferably within inside corner for them to gain good enough labor access constantly (and for these type of no random walker buildings, the brown citizen labor seeker will be generated regardless, just how often they appear). As for buildings with service random walker (with some exception like forum tax collector) has labor seeker function, so if the working level is high enough, and never drop below threshold by passing by houses regularly enough, you might never see their labor seeker appeared. And finally, the walker mechanics matters, no matter how close these feeder houses are, if labor seeker function walker don't pass them (or often enough), it doesn't matter how many you place. Be aware of the walker pattern if you have hard to get labor issue. Check the Risk -> problem overlay, and building with labor access problem will be highlighted in this overlay along with its labor seeker. And speaking of walker mechanics, how's your reading on the walker and forced walker materials I shared on discord, you are going to need those knowledge, for more complex designs in other missions later on.

You can learn it step by step, even knowing a bit of the walker mechanics will help a great deal, like the exit/entrance order can help you determine where a walker might spawn when touching on all sides, knowing the 4 cycles of walker travel pattern can help you get the sense of how walker might travel in which direction, you don't even need to know the exact mechanics to make a U shaped parallel forced loop to function. Take you time, and you will get there. And most importantly watching some forced walker city and try to understand why and come up with explanation or questions how they work and go back to dig up more. And then experiments at bit yourself. That's the reason for the practice and demonstration map in the package

I did that. Paid myself the same salary as caesar because I was loaded and he attacked! Luckily he withdrew as my troops killed his 😇🏴‍☠️😅

I remember I struggled a lot with that style, because the barracks couldnt keep up with the production of enough soldiers if the Gauls and Caesar attacked quickly after each other or even at the same time (I didnt use the glitch with 2 barracks). what I remember though is beating 3 of Caesars waves, but cant remember what happened afterwards

Now I see you build houses i third row. Do you ever build 3x3 house-blocks? As I recall wouldn't give you villas (small, medium, large)? And why don't you use them?

You mean 3x3 villas? I do use them but there isn't a need for them on earlier missions. I get 4 villas on Mediolanum, 2 villas on Lugdunum, and 4 luxury 4x4 palaces by Carthago.

Are u setting the senat for optic? I never use them only forum for taxes. The Senat is expansiv and does not more then a forum and just sucks in so many workers?

i already play this mission fo 2 weeks, and not still victory yet... all rates are safe, but only 1 thing nit achieved yet..its "favor" how to increase that rate... thanks alot

Another suggestion: a 14x7 block (2 7x7s fused together). When I was younger, I built 14x15 with all the good stuff inside: some temples, library, school, pref/eng, a reservoir... The extra "1" was for an aqueduct.

GamerZakh this level has been causing me no end of trouble all week! I understand that the first industry I need to raise is weapons to try to sell them to keep my city profitable. I've tried in both major locations and it seems that weapons aren't too hard to produce in enough quantities to satisfy Caesar's demands. In my last playthrough, I managed to have all the gods angry at me even though I had two temples to each of them and a low population! Do the gods count abandoned posts? Even if they did, shouldn't two or three temples to each of them support a large city? At least once I died because I forgot to take it off Game Speed 90 and I was overrun by attacks. A different time I had a strong enough military to defeat Caesar's legions! I cannot for the life of me seem to figure out how to maintain a second housing block nearly as stable as the first, and the demands of the mission seem to definitely indicate 3 or 4 housing blocks are needed. I've sometimes been swamped with too much furniture produced and nobody asking for it and it not even being a tradeable good. Pottery seems to be the hardest good to get straight. My cities tend to burn down to ashes but I can't figure out anything actually wrong with them. Right now my problem is needing more employees and not being able to support housing to attract them.

Two temples might not be enough, what do you mean by 'low' population? If the gods are unhappy, you don't have enough temples, but also you need to make sure you have the same number of temples to each god as they are jealous gods and will be angrier if the number of temples aren't the same. Also, if no one is working in the temples, they don't count. Check if the temples are actually working or if they are empty. You should always prioritise religion on the employee page as it doesn't take a lot of people and if temples are abandoned the gods will get angry quickly. If you are fighting Caesar's legions, you're doing something wrong. You're not keeping your favour rating up and you're probably in debt for too many years or not fulfilling the requests. You need to hit those targets because fighting off Caesar makes things way more difficult. I can't say anything about why your housing blocks are unstable because I can't see them. I have asked you to send a screenshot or the save file to me. Overproducing goods is a good thing in my books. I always like overproducing and keeping warehouses full. Start by overproducing what you can sell and max your sales, but overproducing everything is fine too. Your city is burning? Then your prefects are not touching the buildings. This is a desert map, things burn faster. Press the 'F' key on the keyboard or turn on the fire risk overlay and see why your buildings are catching fire. You will see where the prefects are not walking.

I want to send a screen shot to you, but there are two problems with that, one big one little-- the little problem is I don't know how to contact you besides KZbin comments, the big problem is my current setup is just a quick download from Steam and to paste a screenshot into a doc I need to close the game, this makes it a very long annoying process to take more than one screenshot. my overproduction becomes a problem for me because I think I have a problem distributing-- it becomes an efficiency minus for me instead of the efficiency plus it gets for you when you figure how to always have enough weapons and oil to sell and always have enough pottery to give out. I think the setup of this level is such that furniture is just plain way too easy to make way more than you need of it because you can get a lot out of distributing pottery to people. you're min-maxing the number of housing blocks you build, or close to it. My last attempt I managed to get 5 housing blocks distributing food, water, security, religion, schooling, and entertainment and wobbling around casa level or better. but I don't think I ever got the map balanced so that nobody was a tent-- there was a lot of emigration and I had employment issues and was constantly replacing things that collapsed. again, obviously screencaps would help you. now that I've figured out there's plenty of space on the map to make more than 3 housing blocks, my next mini-goal for the mission is to see if I can get pottery distributed to 3 housing blocks and sell oil; can I sell oil if I'm stockpiling it? how do I/can I order my city to only sell oil and not distribute it? just placement tricks? I got some mileage out of Gatehouses and even managed to vainly surround my Senate with Gatehouses just to see if I could make that work, and it almost did. Thank you for the "F" hotkey command! that's easier than navigating tabs of risks! the Overlays in Caesar are not as good as the Overlays in Zeus. my immediate next need is I need to figure out how to send screencaps to you.

you have about 3000 population using 2 housing blocks with stable furniture and oil distribution at 1:40 and using blocks more than 7x7. actually adding up the extra edges on both of them is at least half an extra housing block. would you say 4 normal 7x7 housing blocks with furniture and oil distribution can reach more than 4000? this map actually has quite a challenging population goal.

There's the widescreen mod, but nowadays you want to use the engine replacement called Julius for improved original gameplay. There is also the modded version called Augustus, but that changes a lot of the gameplay mechanics.

The game has a bug where on Very Hard the happiness of your people is miscalculated and when you're between 200-300 population they are just super unhappy no matter what you do. That means once you cross 200 people, they start moving out of your city. If you don't lower the difficulty or do tricks, you'll forever go above 200, drop back to 190, go back up and back down again, never hitting 300 population.

@@yharnamoldwer1595 When you place a working building, it sends out a citizen walker. That walker just needs to pass a single house and then the building can access your whole population. You'll notice there are tents scattered in my industry areas for this.

19:40 "one shield is just 15 units a year" what does this mean? can you make multiple troops from the same shield or did you mean the money from selling?

Oh I mean the shields on the trade map, like at 3:35 you can see a shield icon next to every product. That tells you how much can be traded every year.

I kind of liked the fact that fires would start more easily in desert maps. That's very realistic. But while playing that was quite annoying actually. And aaaaah that music when you just start a town. So calm and relaxing 😍. I think I used to loose at that level, or the one just after.

No a shipyard can make infinite boats, you only build more if you want to speed it up.

Hi, I need help about a problem with Caesar 3: when I run the game it send me a message saying that CD-ROM (the original) is missing, but it's inside the DVD player! Do you have any ideas how to resolve this? I really love this game but I'm not able to play it :(

Hmm, I'm not sure if you're using an old disk version. It could be that it's the kind of old game where the disk must be in D: drive. Quite often disk drives nowadays are E: or F: because it's common to have a 2nd hard drive as D: I don't know how you could resolve it, but the best and easiest to run version of the game today is from GOG.com if you're okay buying it again. It often goes on sale for 1-2USD.

Gatehouses block random walkers that just spawn to walk around, so in the housing block it means I can have an intersection but the walkers never have a choice of where to turn. That means every time a walkers spawns, they are 100% guaranteed to pass every house. Walkers with a destination, like a market lady going to the granary, can go through the gatehouse.

I watched your 10Tips video yesterday and tried to put using gatehouses into practice but my market lady refused to get fish from a fully-stocked granary that was just the other side of the gatehouse. As soon as I replaced the gatehouse with a normal road the market suddenly started showing the food stock figures. I was experimenting with how my granaries are placed in relation to roads so maybe that had a bearing on it. But it certainly seemed as if she was refusing to go through the gatehouse. But back to your map: the reason for have the TWO gatehouses is that each one limits the walkers of its respective bit of road, yes ?

@@bazcuda Yeah that's right, the 2nd gatehouse is just to limit the road by the granary, not so important but helps a little bit. Also remember market ladies will priorities wheat before any other food, and if there are multiple types of food available, they will walk across the entire map to get it, so be careful when you have a lot of your city connected.

Gatehouses act as roadblocks for wandering walkers. Walkers with no specific destination can't go through them, so it removes the intersection for them and means every time they spawn they 100% of the time cover the whole block. Walkers with destinations, like a market lady going to a granary, can still walk through a gatehouse.

The market ladies are probably going long distances to get food, try watching them. Also, try spam markets for your houses, need to get resources distributed and more markets will increase capacity even without changing your layout.

It acts like a roadblock. There are 2 types of walkers, wandering and destination. Destination mean they are going somewhere, like a market lady going to a granary. Wandering means they walk randomly. Destination walkers can go through gates but wandering walkers can't, so every time a wandering walker spawns in one of those blocks, it's 100% guaranteed they'll pass every house.

I dont understand why u delete some houses, when unemployment is high? U can build reservoir in any place and surround it with fountains. Easiest way to solve umeployment problem. If u nees more wokers just delete 5-10 fountains.

It depends but if I'm over the target population then it's more efficient to reduce population because the more people you have the more culture you need to hit that target and if you're feeding them then it's a bigger strain on your resources. Deleting houses can lead to more stable food.

@@roissyavontam8084 It's okay, I understand. I don't know if it's a bug but actors will come out from a theatre even without an actor house. What you can do is use the actor house to send an actor a long way on a road going to the theatre. So you can put the theatre on one end of a road and the actor house on the other end and it will make sure every house along that road will always have theatre access no matter how long the road it.

I'm struggling on this map even on easy mode.. My current problem is increasing the population to 5000. I hover at around 3k with citizens constantly leaving and coming back due to market ladies slacking or something. I'm not entirely sure. Keeps telling me they lack food from the markets.

That usually means they're travelling too far to get a single resource and during that trip the market runs out of everything else. Switch to the commerce overlay and actually watch what your market ladies are doing. Understanding how they behave is crucial to beating this game.
