I interviewed 6 wonderful watercolor artists about personal style. Before interviewing them, I thought I had a good idea of how personal style came about. But what they told me was inspiring and eye-opening. You do not want to miss any part of this video. It is not long, but I spent a lot of time and effort on this video. I will be sharing full interview with each artist on my channel in the near future. Stay tuned!
I am a huge fan of all of them, here are their IG:

Thank you, Eric. I have learned so much from your videos. A few years ago, when I first Subscribed to Café Watercolor, you were teaching painting figures and you said something like: never paint the head round, unless you are painting Charlie Brown. That hooked me on your videos and I have watched and learned ever since. A great teacher inspires and finds ways for students to remember lessons. This video is another that I will watch over again. Very interesting, thought provoking and inspiring .

Thank you for this wonderful, interesting and insightful idea 😊 And thank you for sharing. I also appreciate these artists for sharing their thoughts. They all have interesting thoughts about this topic, and to hear them presented together makes it even better, because you get to reflect on things in a different way. I’m am still a beginner that has a lot to learn when it comes to painting techniques, so that is where I am on my journey, but to be able to have this collection of insights following me along on my journey as I develop my skills is such a gift.

I just stopped after Chien. That was some of the most profound and liberating words i've ever seen about producing art. I need a minute. Edit: okay I made it through Evansen and have to stop again! Edit2: Made it through the end! Thank you for producing such a thought-provoking video. And especially thanks to these masters for sharing their insights!

This is a great answer for all my students who ask how to develop "personal style." Some actually become depressed about it. Love some of these comments. Best one: You have to play a lot in order to play like yourself.

Wow Eric. Thank you for this. You said you have done complete interview with all these wonderful masters? I will absolutely keep my eyes on your channel to have the chance to listen to their thoughts. This is absolutely formidable that you speak mandarin (I guess it is mandarin?) and thus can share the thoughts of masters like Chien and Jasmine. Especially Jasmine from whom I’m not sure there is much about her in English (I admit she is one of my favorite, she is quite a huge tree growing beside her husband and it is a rare feet to accomplish that while being always compared to Chien, she is very strong to do that - and even more admirable - and has a genius of her own I think). Thank you Eric, so glad you are there to translate all these “hard to reach” oriental masters from whom there is soooo much to learn.

If we break it down, we look out into the world, then we internalise that outlook, we then copy and merge what we have seen. The combination of our successes and failures with that process becomes our style. You don't find a style, a style finds you. It is like with music, most successful bands were trying to replicate something, and their style was the failure to replicate that thing. Nirvana may be one of the best. But I am confident they weren't aiming to be that. Those successes and failures in trying to replicate something else resulted in that Nirvana style.

I have been watching videos re watercolours and my eye is gradually attracted to a particular style of painting, amongst them is you, Joseph Zbukvic, Michael Soloyev and Thomas Schaller who was once an architect.,Nitin Singh and Prakashan Puthur. All have that same confident, dexterous fluidity in loose paintings. There are others but too numerous to mention. But particularly Japanese art which also embodies a philosophy, Zen.

I appreciated the comment about plein air being about the fundamentals. It makes one really become so familiar with how to formulate paintings on the spot. So true. For me since I do more indoor painting that plein air is a treat and gets me out of a rut and I find the escape necessary to just paint everyday. 😊And good for Jasmine! A comment about style: everyone signs their own name according to their own style and no one signs it like you so why would I choose to change my particular style? It may change a bit over the years but it is still my style so why worry about it?😊

I like how Jasmine is the only one to go out of her way to develop a style, but also not really, and in doing so effected her husband's work. She started in 2014 and she went for a soft loose look. If we look at the example you put up of Chien's work at 3:07 time stamp, the later piece has her elements in it. Softer edges, more analogous colors. She started painting like him, intentionally moved away from that, and now he's painting like her. I just love it! I'm definitely share this with my artist friends. I've been actively trying to not worry about style and I think I know a lot of people this could help out. Thank you so much!

Wonderful question for the modern masters to answer! Good job 👏 For me it is not “hard work” but joyful and meditative to be able to paint. But I am not a professional. I do sell my work regularly, but don’t have the pressure to sell to pay the bills. I would agree that lots of “brush miles” let the individual artist’s style come to the forefront. Ps When I see a painting style so obviously copied from a modern master I wish they would give them credit.

This was an interesting and helpful video, Eric. You asked a great (though difficult to answer specifically) question. I often feel so disappointed in my result. Painting consistently seems to be one key to improvement, and letting the watercolor “fly” (I.e., not trying to over-control) should help move me forward. As they say, nothing will change if you keep doing things the same way. Wish me confidence and boldness.
