Rusty and Amber brought along their adopted blue fronted amazon parrot Norm. He's 20+ years old and REFUSES to leave his cage, whether it's his travel carrier or his cage at home.
That is... unless it's to attack Amber. She's had Norm for 12 years and they've been through life's ups and downs together. They don't trust one another, and he will fly to attack her. While she did start target training when she found our info online, she told us they regressed on it at home and she wasn't sure why... but for some reason Norm began refusing to do it.
Our bird plan of attack is to find a way to encourage Norm to expand his comfort zone... and in Amber's book... a day without an attack is a win!

Once you realize you have to let them want to do something verses making them do something trust builds quickly. We see it in our birds everyday.....such a nice looking Amazon....we have an 16yr rescue orange wing and I think the Amazons get such a bad rap of being an overly aggressive bird. Ours can be a stinker once in awhile, but more often he is a sweet heart and just likes doing things on his own terms and needs space sometimes. Companions, not pets. Love your videos!!!

@@BirdTricks Cant wait to see them!!! My little orange wing is just the best....when they choose you as "the one" its just such a special bond. Im personally not big on tricks...he steps up and down and comes to me and we wrestle and hang out, that's perfect enough for him and I. He is a very happy and content fellow.....lets me know for sure when he not...lol. Btw, he is fully flighted and lives most his days out of his cage in a dedicated room with the rest if the flock, or he's in a large outdoor aviary, or he goes around town with me on my shoulders with a harness.....such joy these guys can bring if you let them be them. He too was cage bound for a year before I rescue him......he goes in and out of his cage as he wishes now....not a punishment anymore, just his private space as he wishes.

@@simonsays5552 Orange wings are about the calmest of all of them....they do not talk as much so they fell out of favor years ago....but I didn't get him to talk. He does talk some tho.....he can communicate very well with his gestures and light beak squeezes....I think most birds do if you watch and learn of their nuances.

Been through this with my two BFA rescues. Billy was in the cage for 25yrs and after two years of consistency, love and support, he's only in his cage to sleep and is a totally different bird! Just taken on a female who lived in a pet shop for 20yrs, was rescued and then her Hoomin died, she refused to leave the cage for 9yrs!! She will fly AT you and attack. I'm only 2mths into rehabbing her. I wouldn't be without them. Yes, they're really hard work sometimes but I'd NEVER give them up! Not for anything! Even if I never get to a "perfect" place with them, as long as they're healthy and happy 😊

Nice video. My Blue Headed Pionus was cage bound. He passed last week. He was born in the 80s(like me). I had him almost 6 years. Introduced him to proper diet , avian full spectrum and real sunlight, and a proper cage (one meant for Amazons), instead of one meant for a parakeet and only two of the same exact type of perches. I know the damage to the feet that causes. I also taught him to fly/ or at least enabled him to by stopping the plucking/ and damaging of flight feathers. I took him to the Vet Dr. Laurie Hess, who in the tri state, is highly respected and has a book. You may be interested in, if you dont know her already. Not saying anything about your abilities . They are clearly at highest of level.....just to possibly link you with like- minded

Jamie, you are amazing. I was angry at the beginning of the video that he was afraid of coming out of his cage. I want to find the people that caused this and... but at the end of the video I was near happy tears because you successfully got him out of the cage. His body language changed so much, at the beginning of the video his bubble above his head said "OHH close the door, I'm scared", but by the end his bubble was "HEY, I stepped over here, where is my treat. Humm, if I go here do I get a treat?" as he moved back and forth on T stands uncommanded. You guys do such an amazing and great work, thank you for sharing it with so many.

Maybe Norm thinks of Rusty as his mate and needed to chase Amber away from him. Just a thought I had, as I was writing this about Norm chasing Amber. But you work wonders, JamieLeigh :))) You and Dave have a very special gift!!! Love, big hugs, birdie kisses. Barb, Beenie, and Baby spirit :))) PS. ITS.BRANDIE that kinda thing is pretty difficult to make happen unless the owners reach back out and book another session. The sessions you’ll see throughout the months have taken place in Australia 🇦🇺 to Florida to Utah and all over so it’s not always easy for us to go back to each place but I agree follow ups would be awesome and I wish more people did them! 💖

Hey I have a question! What's your daily routine? How do you guys keep all your birds trained? Do you have to go through all the tricks and training every day with every one of the birds? once every every week? Every once in a while on the whim? I know you guys train for your shows which probably requires vigorous training, but how about family pets? What do you recommend or is realistic? Especially if someone owns a lot of birds like 5-10? Because if that's every day then that would be 75 mins for 5 birds if its 15 minutes each. Thanks! Someone wanting to get way more parrots but not sure how demanding it will be to keep them all trained and tamed.

Hey. I wanted to tell u that ur videos have helped me build a base knowledge on how I want to take care of my bird. Seeing ur birds makes me really happy cause m also a bird enthusiast so good job!😋 if u don't mind, I have a few questions that, if answered, would really clear up my confusion and make me a better bird owner. In about two months, I'm getting an african grey. He's going to be 5-6 months old and I will be his first owner. Should I target train him? How will that benefit him? Should I use a clicker for this particular training only? Or for all types of training? Or should I not use a clicker at all and just praise him and give him a treat? I'll appreciate it if u answer my queries🥰☺ Love u❤❤❤

My African grey parrot is the sweetest heart in the world but she has her moments where she demands attention and for some practical reasons, I can't provide that for her, she divebombs my head hahaha... then I simply find 5 min to talk to her and she becomes mellow and super cute again. I would say I have the opposite problem. My Chiku only uses her cage as a bedroom. That means she goes to bed at 9-10 and is let out in the morning at 9. If I need to go out she is free. For some reason, she becomes very quiet and still when she is alone. That is why I can't stay away for too long because she does not eat or drink when I am not around?

So we recently adopted a Sun Conure which we think might have been abused. I dont think any targeting training has been done at all on this 3 year old (by his body language). well, I started doing some additional training today around lunch with sunflower seeds. this was on top of his cage to start, an when he would get the treat I did the clicker. we did this 3 or 4 times and then started to work with the end of the targeting stick. he did the first one pretty well. then, it seemed to start getting harder for him and he would get frustrated. he then flew at my face and attacked my lip, flew back to his cage then attacked at my face again when I stepped farther back. he's been in the house only a few day and this is his 4th or 5th attack. I totally understand this is going to take time and patience. Here are my questions. 1) what is the right protocol when the bird is attacking? do i just stand there eyes closed and let him finish? or is it natural to jerk and protect yourself? 2) what is the right protocol when this behavior happens? do you try to target him back to the cage with a treat? or completely step back until he goes back into his cage. do you say NO? Just trying to understand what you do for these types of behaviors.

I have a terrified cockatiel that paces in the cage whenever you need to change his feeder bowl or open the cage door, I can leave it open and he'l pace around knowing he can get out but doesn't, he gets chaotic when I put more food in the bowl even if he's on a high perch, he'll drop down and pace. I tried the gentle approach but it doesn't work (offering a treat from my hand, he'll panic) I don't know what to do. (he came from a different owner and I don't know his backstory)

I feel like that display case in the background would not be a great place to live. Fluorescent lights? I know I hate them! Thoughts? Completely non-bird owner/ learning EVERYTHING I can before getting a bird myself (like in a few years I think I’ll be truly ready) any advice or opinions welcome!

My issue with it is how tiny it is....course I think that about most cages.

My bird used to do so good, she is an Indian Ringneck. In the beginning she was doing so good with her training. I had gotten her to eat from my hand. But when we moved and I had to put her in a carrier she changed. She is fully flighted and will lunge at you from her cage when you replace her food and water, then she will fly and attack you. She bites hard enough to draw blood. What can I do. I love her to pieces but I even have to wear welding gloves to clean her cage now. What am I doing wrong.

My cockatiel is afraid of the target stick what do I do

Ok so now you just need to train Amber, his owner, to always be ready to give him treats immediately when he does good. Because I can see this poor bird going right back to being fearful and wanting to stay in his cage if she keeps forgetting the treats

One thing I see you guys stress is to not move the target stick once it’s presented. At 3:41 I noticed you ended up pulling the target back several inches more. What happened with his body language that made you realize you could push the boundary there when only a few repetitions before he wasn’t targeting without luring?

Hello thanks so much for your teachings and for all you do for birds. I wanted to ask for your guidance. We recently brought home an albino ringneck (we think is a girl) she is only 3 months old. We have/ own only one other bird (blue Quaker). The albino was very timid, she would get very nervous and scared on anything. I started working with her and everything was going well. Until i screamed at my other bird a couple of days ago while I was working with her and from there on she wants to bite me. I get close to the cage and she wants to bite. When i grab her with a towel out of the cage, i can pet her on top of me with no problem. But when i put her back on her cage and want her back, she wants to bite again and again. What do you recommend?

please don’t force or grab your bird out of the cage if it doesn’t want to

My Indian ring neck has lots of problems I don’t know if it’s from his previous owner not giving him much attention but he will not come out of his cage when I use a glove he likes to hop on it but when I use my hand without a glove he is afraid I tried giving him small treats but I get no response except going into the top corner of his cage

Sophia Bultena that’s just how I hold the clicker on top of the stick, we do sell clickers on our website but usually use Chinese food takeout chopsticks for our target sticks 💖 Birdtricks.com

Myself, I just duct tape clickers to sticks (chinese or even a metal collapsable antenna for variable length). Works great!
