One of my favourite aspects of this show is just how well they combine a mixture of moments that are absurd and moments that are just so real they physically hurt. Along with the fact that there are moments that you really don’t like a lot of the characters you usually love. Like there are a lot of moments when you find yourself really liking Frank because he has quite a few ‘comedic’ moments (for lack of a better word), but there are moments where the reality of just how terrible of a man and a father he is hits you like a brick to the head.

The way jimmy was never a good boyfriend to Fiona AND people swear they are goals is gross. he was cheating on her, lied about tons of shit, love bombed her when they met and is shown to only do something for them when he’s trying to look good , he never would have told Fiona he was lying about his name and family and only does so because he’s caught after bribing Debbie and lying more, he only gets back with her because estafania bf was gonna murder him and he had no where else to go. As soon as he has to live the life he’s been telling Fiona he wants with her for 3 seasons he throws a fit about what actually living as a poor person is like and blames it on Fiona to leave to “become a doctor” for the family which was just more gaslighting and lies. Fiona likes him so much because he’s just like frank. Emotionally unavailable, liar, manipulative, narcissistic, impulsive, etc, it’s also why almost everyone she gets with in the show is just like frank in one way or another (granted her cup job boss wasn’t) but that’s exactly why she ends up cheating on him with his brother that is just like frank.
@milkisreallygood89573 ай бұрын
i think the reason why people like Fiona and Jimmy together is because they fit well together. They're both unstable, fucked up and have a sus past. They will never be a healthy couple because both of them have issues in their lives they need to store out. Out of all Fiona's boyfriends, I like steve/jimmy the most despite the toxicity because they matched each other and Fiona seems to actually love Jimmy compared to her other boyfriends. However if Fiona gets her stuff together and heals herself from the past, she will outgrow Jimmy. Also, I don't think any relationship in shameless is a good relationship lmao.

i think the criticism of fiona dismissing help from steve. it’s hard to imagine if you didn’t grow up in legit poverty surrounded by ppl in situations just as bad - if not worse. in that environment, every single interaction is transactional, so when somebody helps you, they expect it paid back, usually with interest. and 90% of the time this isn’t a dollar amount they expect back, but favors. in fiona’s case she probably has a lot of PTSD from being the parent to 4 kids at the age of 9, and innocently trying to get help from grown men, and getting taken advantage of or expected to do ~*•favors•*~ for these men in return for them helping her.

@mariachi321726 күн бұрын
I like that it’s pretty reflective to reality. Sure the jokes, bad as they are, reflect the reality of what’s happening. Is there anything being peddled? People can argue Islamophobia but ultimately there’s no solid yes or no but it’s just character interactions of what the writers wanted to portray for people who live in extreme poverty conditions might joke about. I’d say a lot of the criticism, while well meaning, just erases a lot of the why those things happen. Yes the big main one with the ages gaps are very important to point out. But it’s a very common problem in reality for people who were forced to grow up quickly or just being a product of living in poverty. It isn’t just a trope but an actual product from reality. Almost all tropes are products from reality.

When it comes to Karen's erractic behaviour in season 2 after the baby is born, I always thought she was suffering from postpartum depression. Depression doesnt always manifest sadness/emptyness sometimes its manifest as irritability and anger. I don't think they ruined her character in that moment.
@cainvarner4 ай бұрын
i’m talking specifically about her reputation as Lip’s “girl from next door” being tainted, which obviously she was never exclusively together with him, but the fact that she ran through so many men, came back to Lip, manipulated his feelings about going through the whole process of adoption “together”, just for the baby to not be his, and yet somehow HE is the one who’s still willing to show the child love… Also not even just about the baby thing. she was so cruel to Sheila who literally only wanted to take care of the child AND keep Karen in her life. At first when Karen returns in Season 3 she’s definitely less insufferable but then immediately starts trying to break Mandy and Lip up(which this is obviously more Lip’s fault but i thought i’d include it because it shows she’s not a girls girl) Lastly, her trying to force Hiram out of Sheila’s life is again CRUEL. i do not care if she suffered postpartum depression, She chose to try to ruin Lip’s relationship with Mandy and ultimately paid the price for that(not that what Mandy did was okay AT all, but still) Either way, i still love Laura Slade Wiggins in the role and it’s a shame she left the show with almost no redemption arc for the horrible things Karen did.

All of the inappropriateness, the uncomfortable moments, the legal gray areas with the relationships, the homophobia... All of it is realistic and necessary to tell this story. I get that it makes people uncomfortable and offends them but it's how real life is. I live in a world like this and it's quite simply just the way it is. So if you're gonna tell a story that's grounded in reality, you simply cannot sanitize said reality just to satisfy what is ultimately a loud minority who cannot distinguish art from their feelings. I say this all with love and respect but I stand by it. I wouldn't change a thing about this show, it's a masterpiece, especially in the earlier seasons.

I think Mickey is a great storyline for a gay person that doesn’t have a supportive family and is raised by mega conservatives, and how he gets out of that in the end. He’s a great opposite to Ian while also having something in common so they relate, while having their differences in background. Mickey had a lot of great character development getting away from at least some of his internalized homophobia (or genuine homophobia) and learn to be a better person
@cainvarnerАй бұрын
idk about the development part…by the end he’s still a racist bigot who’s a little more feminine that before. i’m glad he makes ian happy but he’s the main reason i really cannot stand some of the “here’s your gay character, but they have to be an awful piece of shit” representation the show delivers regularly
@Nick867Ай бұрын
@@cainvarner that’s fair but I also remember Mickey distinctly pointing out his father’s racism as a negative (meaning he didn’t like his father due to that as he got older) which means there is at least some development on that end. This still applies even when Mickey was mourning his father after his death, growing up in a mega conservative family causes you to have REALLY complex feelings and relationships towards family members, and affects your development/personality) He still has questionable tendencies but this show is all about imperfect people. I completely understand the critique on the “gays have to be an awful piece of shit” trope though, it gets tiring when your only rep is really straight passing for such a long time

One thing that may be fun to add to these videos as you continue them are your favorite and least favorite characters each season/part you do. I feel like shameless is one of those shows where you can LOVE one character one episode and the next never want to see them again which is so unique. I know my fav changes every season (especially as someone like you who has seen it all and knows what comes later) and I would love to hear your thoughts as we go through! Great video, I cant wait for the other parts ☺☺ Ill start: In season 1 and 2 my fav was Fiona and season 3 was Ian! But by the end of the series I have an entirely new overall favorite which is fun

i've watched a few other shows with the "minor 'dates' an adult" storyline but it never hit me how truly heinous it is to show like it's no big deal until i watched this show. i'm an adult now which plays a part, but ian's actor being a minor during the shooting of s1 and very much looking like A CHILD was the thing that made me truly disgusted. when the 17-year old hooking up with someone in their 20's is played by a 25 year old it doesn't look that bad but when the actor is a child themselves the reality hits you.

if i’m not mistaken he was a minor during the pilot but was 18 for the rest of S1 which is still HORRIBLE, but like not illegal because they wait to have them kiss on screen until he was 18. FOUL either way
