What blew up the sport was Angel Reese making that mocking hand gesture to Caitlin Clark in 2023, and all of controversy surrounding that. It drew in viewers who had never watched women’s basketball. I was reading news about the White House when I heard about it as the story was covered by the White House press corps (there was this controversy and intrigue about whether Angel Reese was going to vis the White House after their win). People were on news sites arguing about Caitlin Clark versus Angel Reese, lol. After following that I started learning about other players as well which got me interested in watching the games. Now, I’m totally invested in the women’s basketball players from this draft class.

I never watched the WNBA, so I just recently learned that a season is only 3 months or something. Basically, the players are being paid for practicing their hobby in a loss making league. Any payment is a pretty good payment under these circumstances. If the league growths and starts becoming a net positive product, things will change. If not, stop asking for money that isn’t earned. The stars like CC will make their money with sponsorships, that’s where market value comes into play.

I agree with you to a point! Clark is fun to watch she’s like the girls Steph curry just can pull up from anywhere and make it! Reese is kind of boring on the court however to her credit off the court, with her look, personality, and attitude, she does draw attention! Remember throughout history in sports what turned the leagues into gaining national attention was player rivalries! The nba was on verge of collapse before bird and magics rivalry that started in college! Jordan against Magic, Bird, and Isiah! Then turned into Jordan against everyone Barkley, Stockton, Malone, Kemp,Olijiwan, Payton, Ewing, Starks, Miller, etc! Then Kobe, Shaq, Iverson, Lebron then Lebron, Steph, Durant, etc! In order to grow a league you need real rivalries! For the wnba nobody can think of one rivalry that stands out, ever! So they need Caitlyn and Reese to both do well and go at eachother! Two years in college they had prime time games and both lived up to the hype! So the wnba has to build up the hype and play off it and build that rivalry! If they cannot do that then the league will continue to fail! Even if Clark is great, nobody will continue to watch if they cannot create a rival for her

Just looking at the stats, It would be better to say that Clark and Reese were the reason that so many ppl tuned in to watch that game. Reese was her arch nemesis, and ppl love seeing these things. Clark may get a lot of the recognition, but would so many ppl have tuned in had these two women not had their rivalry. She deserves her flowers, but last year, we saw a lot of amazing talent in womens basketball that gave it an overall boost. As you stated, where were the accolades deserved by South Carolina’s amazing season? Considering the majority of the “Caitlin Clark craze” seems to coming from people who admitted they never watched the games before, I think they need to go back in time and watch Cheryl Miller, Candace Parker, Diana Tarausi, and other players who ACTUALLY made women’s college ball with watching. Then and only then will their comments be worth listening to.

Of course there were other great female players before her, but noone was interest in watching them play. But they are interested in Clark and to a degree her nemesis Reese. Those 2 could do for the WNBA what Magic/Bird did for the NBA. There were a lot of great players before and during their era, but those 2 saved the NBA! She may be the CURRENT “most famous” female basketball player but, absolutely NOT the MOST in history. Diana Taurasi…?? Candace Parker..?? Brittany Grinder…?? I don’t even CARE for these players but, they did a HECK of a lot more to bring women’s basketball closer to the forefront as it was just in the infant stages than Clark. Two championship games and she lost BOTH?!? Wait until she sets records in the WNBA then I might change my mind.

The WNBA estimated that Caitlin Clark will bring in $100 million to the WNBA this year!! In Minnesota they've just had to expand their ticket sales to 19,000 for a game in July. This is a team which last year averaged 7,700 fans per game!!

Clark is fun to watch!! She is like the girls Steph Curry, she just can pull up from anywhere and make it! Reese is kind of boring on the court, however to her credit, off the court with her look, personality, and attitude, she does draw attention! Remember, throughout history in sports what turned the leagues into gaining national attention was player rivalries!
