The ascension of basketball star Caitlin Clark has made the WNBA must-see TV. Fans are tuning in and buying tickets at rates not seen in decades. Despite that success, financial struggles remain for the league. Before we get to the bad news, let's start first by mentioning WNBA's recent accomplishments.
According to league officials, approximately 400,000 fans attended games in May. That's the most through the first month of a season in 26 years. More than half of all games that month were sellouts, an increase of 156% from the previous season.
Games airing on networks like ESPN and CBS are averaging 1.32 million viewers. That's almost three times higher than last year's game average. Even merchandise sales are skyrocketing. Since the start of the season, league officials said the website WNBAstore.com has seen a 756% increase in sales compared to the same time last year.
Yet even with all of that good news, the Washington Post reported that the league is expected to lose $50 million this year. That CEO came over from Deloitte I believe. She is playing with the numbers. The players need a James Garner. He never got residuals for Rockford Files. He had to sue and discovered all of the bogus costs the studio was rolling in to create the losses on paper.

The Aces are in a much smaller arena most of their home games. Also they are getting less money per ticket. In Vegas there are comp tickets for gamblers. Caitlin's games are above $100 per ticket home and away. Non Caitlin games are below $30. With incentives Caitlin can make over $500k this year. Viewership in CC games is above 1.2M and non CC games is below 500k. I too use to work with P&L statements. The 50M was just a rumor in a third of the year. Could be less could be more. Hard to know what the accountants are doing and we may never know. Indiana has to be the only profitable franchise right now. A couple of the teams are playing in real small arena's. One is around 4k.

Just the gate at any 2024 fever game looks to be over $1.5 million which is an estimated increase of about $1.2 million per game over last year. This is due to the increase in attendance and ticket price.

It's not a race for Rookie of the Year in the WNBA, and there isn't a fabricated Media narrative that can change the results. (10 Rebounds vs. 10 Assist) Clark has bigger objectives of the winning the WNBA Championship and MVP of the "W"

The Women's basketball market is changing at a very rapid pace, and the WNBA has to accommodate the growing fan base. The increased Gross Revenue percentages should reflect the same percentage of players increase.

Game attendance is great and all, BUT it's the TV contract is the lion's share of revenue by a mile. The WNBA is operating on a pre CC contract. The money will come with a new contract.

Angel Reese DOES NOT Bring in the People to the Stadium. CC DOES. Not sure why people keep thinking that Angel Reese sells out the Seats. Only when CC comes to any stadium, they either sell out or HAVE TO MOVE to a BIGGER stadium. Angel Reese DOES NOT DO That for them.
