I want to know more about your set ups :) Which elements you have in your cajon kit?? Please comment here!
@jaydelado2 жыл бұрын
Hello. Well, to be honest I kept my cajon real without any add-ups for years. Cuban style, you know. Had a blast for over a decade but never felt as confortable as behind my drumset. I now snare my cajon up a bit more often and put some cabasa on the side. Bass boosting it with a tube too. But this video of yours is a game changer ! I'm aiming for a drum/cajon kit with cymbals because of you, almost the same as you did in your last example (plus a floor tom, maybe). Musically versatile and easy-travelling set. I'll see the results in a few weeks/months. Hybriding cajon and drums seem obvious but sometimes all we need is a little push. This video was definitely made for it. Thanks again. Keep on going!

So I built a pretty similar kit to this, now that I finished it I love the flexibility and different possibilities of how I play it. Buuut I’ve run into a real problem with the kick pedal (I have the same direct drive Meinl one you use). I really like the feel of the pedal but I can’t get it to stay in place. No matter how tightly I clamp it to the bar that goes under the cajon it still drifts loose after about a minute of playing. Any tricks to solving this you’ve learned?

I'm in a 2 piece acoustic band. I've come to LOVE my cajon kit, which has evolved over the years. - Gon Bops, El Toro all black Cajon (string snare, great bass / snare separation) - ChromaCast Pro direct drive cajon pedal (I modified to make straighter - awesome, no lag) - Vater cajon brush in left hand to strike cajon for snare sound - Promark Hot-Rods in right hand to get the ping cymbal sounds - 2002 17" Paiste thin crash (rideable/crashable) - 10" Dream splash cymbals as hi-hats - DW 5000 2-leg hi hat stand (foot space is everything) - Shure Super 55 mic (vocal) - Shure BETA 52A Kick Drum Microphone (for cajon back hole) - Gravity mic boom stand (heavy to support heavy mic on boom) - LP Matador bongos w/ LP stand - Extra thick, homemade cajon seat cushion (no-sew tie velour cover) with rubber non-slip bottom - Tambourine, shakers, cowbell, and chimes (as needed)

This is the video I was waiting for! Thanks Felipe for this valuable information. Just as an additional note for our community: You can leave the sticks and the shaker in certain sections of the song and play the cajon the traditional way, so you don't lose the essence of the instrument. Cheers!

Good point Horacio! You can always come back to the cajon 😉 It’s important to have this in mind, cheers my friend!

Excelente vídeo. Pensé que yo era el único loco que adhiere más elementos al cajón hasta convertirlo en una especie de Minor Percussion-Drum Set 😅 Yo le he puesto: Kick pedal 13" Piccolo-snare 13" floor drum 13" Hi-hat 10" Cymbal 12" Cymbal 14" Splash LP 441 Soft shaker Small tambourine on the left foot Playing with brushes (most of the time) Lo hago solo por diversión, porque soy guitarrista y grabo mis propias canciones incluyendo la percusión. Sometimes instead of a shaker, I will put some loose nuts and bolts into a water bottle, scrunch it up and strap that to my foot. It gives a kind of *loose audience stomping* sound effect.

I use the cajon, hi hat , cymbal setup frequently. For a snare I use the LP 10" cajon octo- snare. The wood has aged well and you can get some great sounds out of it. I also use a 10" Meinl Djembe in the setup on occasion.

Great video Felipe. I use the Meinl direct drive cajon pedal as well. When I feel ambitious, I'll add a 16" crash as a ride and a 10" splash as a crash, only because they are smaller, and throw in some hi-hats. I'll also use a Meinl travel cajon as a snare and play with Promark broomsticks. I really like the broomsticks because I get a softer sound on the cymbals. And when I want to completely lose the cajon vibe, I'll add in some bongos as toms, a wood block, tambourine, shakers, cowbell... then all I need to do is take away the cajon and replace it with a bass drum. 😊 It's fun to experiment.
@CajonMaster2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! The splash works fine. I use it when I’m playing only with hands on my left side. The meinl travel cajon is a good option as well with brushes 👍🏻 As you said always good to experiment 😉🙏 cheers!

Dear Mr. Cajon Master, Thank you for this video. It's helping me make up my mind regarding a cajon drum kit. I plan to play at my church and it's low-volume acoustic setting. I want to use a pedal for the cajon (so the cajon acts as a bass drum) and a low-hat and probably a splash cymbal. A true snare drum will be too loud so what would you recommend? The LP cajon snare drum? I looked at the Meinl cajon drum set but the snare sounds more like a woodblock than a snare. Please let me know your thoughts for optimal setup. Thank you and I am enjoying your videos. Salvatore

Great video! I am setting my new Cajon drumset (including bongos and congas). How could I set the tone of the Cajon, in order to use it mostly as bass drum?
@CajonMaster2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message Simone. I would advise you jut to loose a bit the to middle screws just to have the center a bit more soft and not to responsive and also it's important t choose a cool soft beater. The tennis ball beater or the foam beater work fine with the cajon. Hope it helps. Look forward to hear about your new kit ;)

@CajonMaster11 ай бұрын
Hi! I agree with you, after a while the base plate is not the best. I've just spoke with Meinl about that and they are releasing a new pedal with a new base plate in 2024. Let see if it will be better, I will test it here.

@CajonMaster Жыл бұрын
I understand your point. But sometimes the bass drum can be very loud compare to the cajon, and also if is a small gig with a small space for a band for example, the cajon as a kick drum can save space.
