It's the Cake Kalk Electric VS Moab. The middleweight electric dirt bike takes on Moab Utah's Slickrock. Electric dirt bikes are made for Moab and Slickrock trail. Instantly transforming the rolling stone into the world's biggest skatepark. Can the Cake Kalk hang with a KTM? How much power does it have? What's the range?
How many gears does it have? Can it climb the steeps of Moab? We answer as many questions as we can and review the ride for both the mountain biker and the vet moto rider along with what to expect from an electric dirt bike. Compared to a KTM the Cake is not apples to apples. It's not even apples to oranges. It's more like apples to a Twinkie. It's a small light package of super sweet adrenaline that might not be good for you.
I'm getting another one soon:

Hi Alex, first of all love the video and all mod’s done to the Cake. Would it be possible to make a comparative video between the Cake and your Sur ron..? I understand that they are two different bikes but will be nice to know your take on the two..? Thanks bud!!!
@JoyOfBike
@JoyOfBike 3 жыл бұрын
You're right. They are so different and I struggle to compare them. The Surron are really fun and affordable. They makes about 6.8 HP stock vs the 20HP and 30+ foot pounds of torque of the Cake. My analogy would be that the Surron is like a delicious appetizer and the Cake is like a meal. Your question is actually helping me think of ways to talk about the differences. I'll try to shoot something before the snow sets in here.

Great video! My Sur Ron arrives this week but I already want one of them:) (and a Cybertruck to charge them) You rode with Bob Hannah! Wow, I used to read Dirt Bike when I was a kid in Wales (I'm two years older than you). They called him the man with the reversible name... I remember when the Red Rocket first came out and how weird it looked compared to the bikes we rode. Unfeasibly long suspension, funny looking seat. Things haven't changed much since then, until now when Lithium Ion batteries came to make bikes look weird again.
@JoyOfBike
@JoyOfBike 3 жыл бұрын
You will get a huge kick out of the Sur Ron!!. Love the cybertruck idea too. I didn't know Hannah. I was in Florida and he was in California so I occasionally got to race him. I was on a 250 Husky with a metal gas tank when he lapped me. It was a pig. In around 1976 the MX sanctioning body in Europe made a minimum weight rule because Suzuki was killing everybody with a 176lbs 125. The rule states at 125 has to be at least 198 and a bigger bikes at least 200. I think that rule destroyed the natural progression to lighter weight bikes and the electrics have a chance to reinvent what a dirt bike can be.

NIce video. As others have said lets see it do something hard along with some other bikes for comparison. This thing looks awfully tame compared to an enduro bike. Surron has the Ulta Bee now and KTM the Freeride-e. We need that comparison video lol.

Super intrigued by the translation between this and moto, and this and MTB. Coming from mtb myself, this is where I'd want to be as opposed to diving into full moto. Sounds like very low maintenance - would love to hear more about suspension componentry and service intervals, and more about suspension/kinematic performance compared to mtb. Obviously not going to be as concerned with metrics like anti squat, but anti rise and ramp up kinematics would be dope to hear more about... Thanks for the great content! Keep it up.
@JoyOfBike
@JoyOfBike 3 жыл бұрын
Anti-Squat and anti-rise are more bike terms than moto and I'm not well versed enough to try to make a translation. I think Dave Weagle has a Cake. And he might have a channel. He'd be the guy to ask for sure. Love that guy and was so bummed to see Trust go under. The front fork is not an MTB fork and not a moto fork. It's in between. Same with the rear shock. But I think they lean toward bike to keep the package light. The front has felt harsh to me and I've backed the high and low speed compression damping way down. The rebound is a bit fast but I haven't messed with it. My local bike tuner called Dirt Labs is going to do a re valve for me soon. The rear end has a linkage and feels really progressive but maybe undersprung a tad. No plans to mess with it other than maybe add some rebound damping. In moto you can add power to stiffen the back end. So if you were gonna land flat off a big jump you twist the throttle wide open and that stiffens the back end as you land. This bike has the swingarm and drive sprocket pivoting on the same link. I've heard that lessens the ability to use throttle to stiffen the rear suspension. Can't say I've noticed one way or the other but it probably makes it ride a bit more like a bike when the throttle has less impact on the suspension.

I want to know why none of the electric moto manufacturers hav made an “artificial clutch”. Leave the clutch lever there but just monitor it electronically, and instead of actuating a clutch have it change the torque curve of the motor controller. That way when someone wanted to loft the front tire they could drop the clutch and the controller would know you want full torque immediately to lift the front end. Whereas normally the controller wants to give you a smooth curve to keep the torque manageable. I think you could honestly simulate a clutch electronically and gain a ton of traction in the moto community.
@JoyOfBike
@JoyOfBike 3 жыл бұрын
Cool idea. Maybe even a log button. hit it and it changes the power curve for 10 seconds or something. I know some of the electric trials bike do come with clutches but I think they're mechanical. Would be a rad mod too.
@zauwee
@zauwee 3 жыл бұрын
It would be great. But I assume that would probably increase the price significantly enough to be a deal breaker for some. The bike is already outta reach for most of the folks out there. But I think that’ll come with time. As Alex properly put it, parking lots at trail heads will look quite different in 3 years.

electric motion has this on their bikes. They are out of france but have a dealer network in the US. What the electric motion bikes do not have though is engine braking which Cakes do have (2 stroke, 4 stroke or even free wheel). Really cool bikes but personally I'd rather have the engine braking, when I test rode a cake I was really impressed with that feature. Sure would be nice to have both though :)

Great video Alex, and very interesting mods. You forgot to tell us what the standard wheelsizes are! (19-19?). My only real complaint, both about your video and the bike itself, is this '3 hours/50 miles' range claim. I simply cannot believe that you could run for 3 hours - at anything much more than bicycle pace - with a 2.6kwhr battery. In my experience, of both Cakes and many other electric motorcycles, I'd expect about half that claimed range. Oh yeah, and one other thing. You forgot to mention that it helps to have legs like a giraffe to get on it...
