When your fight song is so good the Southern Branch has to steal it. 🐻

UCLA stole the fight song from Cal. The story goes way back between the band conductors. ""Big C" is a fight song of the University of California, Berkeley. It was composed in 1913 by Harold P. Williams, with lyrics by Norman Loyall McLaren. It was written to commemorate the construction of the large concrete "C" in 1905 on the "rugged Eastern foothills" of the Berkeley campus. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_%22C%22

RED RUM I remember reading a story about the Presidents office in Westwood in the early days. The new President spent too much of his first day noticing that the telephone would be answered “University of California” and the new Prexy directed that it be answered “University of California Los Angeles” every time. Big moment for the Folks of Westwood no doubt.

Although the "Big C" song is used for all the UC colleges (UCLA, UCI, UCR, UCSB, UCD, UCM, UCSD, UCSC and Cal). Even though it was originally used for Cal (since it was the first UC school) the other UC schools use it they just change the parts in the middle.

Everyone identifies it as UCLA's fight song. Cal is never on national tv. Hence, no one knows or cares what Cal's fight song is. Poor Cal just gets ignored.

As a Bruin alum, I have to admit I like the original Big C version a little more than Sons of Westwood...but I'm not crazy about that 'Grrr' thing. I hate when we play Sons every time we make a first down.... it's just too long.

That student section is doing a pretty weak attempt at showing support for the band and school songs. Where is the rally crew??? Things have changed since the 90s. Geez.

it sounds like they haven't added a new song to their repertoire in like 50 years. Bands need to modernize imo. What college student is going to be excited by this music? What reason do they have at all to be enthusiastic about hearing the same song they have heard for years. Maybe in the 90s this would be interesting but now it just feels completely out of place and boring

Why would the Cal Band play the UCLA fight song at the Big Game?
@chrisdken5 жыл бұрын
Haha, you're confused, UCLA got everything from their big brother, Cal - their baby bear (Bruin), colors and fight songs from Cal. Originally the University of California Southern Branch until it was renamed UCLA. Poor UCLA cannot get its own fight song after 100+ years, poor baby bears (also known as bruins).
@dt333455 жыл бұрын
In all seriousness, UCLA took Big C and made their own arrangement/lyrics to make their own fight song and many other UCs have done the same.

Both UCLA and Cal are UC. Meaning they're basically the same university just in different locations.

Berkeley IS the University of California. All of the others are secondary campus'. UCLA is the afterthought, just like the rest of them.
