CAL POLY FRESHMAN DORMS

Unfortunately I am not able to go inside the dorms but I wanted to share some footage and information about Cal Poly Freshman housing since I know I was very curious as an incoming freshman. Very insightful video! I just got accepted to Cal Poly yesterday so this came out at the perfect time haha. From what I heard, you don't get to pick which dorm building you want to be in, but rather a "Living Learning Community". What was your experience with choosing an LLC + do you know what buildings typically correspond with each community?

^^ was wondering this as well. if you could perhaps do a video explaining the process and stuff + maybe stereotypes of each learning community (like i heard the business one is the most rowdy?) that’d be super appreciated!

I know every year they have made some adjustments to what dorms you're placed in based on what you pick. My freshman year North Mountain was mainly engineering students so it was very quiet over there but the following year they changed it and it became super rowdy. I lived in the "cooking" tower in Sierra Madre my freshman year and it was super rowdy and crazy. I think they switched dorms after our year because Yosemite and Sierra Madre both were known as the party dorms. I think if you pick a dorm based on interest rather than major its more rowdy. But Tenaya which is the business dorm is pretty fun and crazy. If you are looking for a quieter space- STEM dorms usually have people who value a quieter environment. Hope that helps!

thank you for this! i just got accepted as an electrical engineering student, but i’m not sure which dorm is best for me. i’d prefer dorms closer to the rec center but also near the engineering classes/buildings. i’m not sure where everything on campus is lol, but i’d love to know which dorm buildings you’d recommend :)

Congrats on getting accepted!! If you want to be close to the rec then the new dorms are the closest! There are tons of engineering buildings but most are closest to north mountain dorms. I would suggest the new dorms because you’ll be super close to the center of campus and not too far from classrooms!

@@purplecactus325 when i was a freshman they stayed in Fremont but it is the one closest to the hill and they had a bunch of mud slides that made them shut the dorm down and I'm not sure if they were ever able to re open it!

Hey Finley! If you live in the business dorm it’s Tenaya (which is a red brick dorm)!

Sierra Madre/ Yosemite and red bricks will either be double or triple but no single rooms available at any dorm:/

Do I get to choose if I want to live like at the newest dorms?

You don’t get the chose but you can find out what group of people live in those dorms (it’s probably a living and learning community) and you can put that as your preference. For example, my freshman year the “cooking” dorm was in Sierra madre and I wanted to live there so I put “cooking” as my preferred living situation.
