@brysnare13 classical conducting is designed to include large movements so that the band can see the drum majors when they are not up on a podium. it was used many years ago (I guess they didn't stand on podiums back then) and for some reason we continue to use it here at IUP. it is sort of hard to tell where the beat is sometimes but after playing in the band for a while you get used to it

@PenguinAndJacobLover It's considered our classical style because it was how we originally conducted before podiums were used. When the corp style of marching was still being experimented with, the drum majors moved with the band. In order to see our pattern from backfield, we needed a large, eccentric pattern that we could see. Thus, Dr. Casavant created the style of conducting that we still use because of tradition. It's also known as the Casavant style. Other schools we teach use it too.

@PenguinAndJacobLover We use this style of conducting as a tradition... long ago, our drum majors conducted from the ground and needed to create a style of conducting that would allow the band to follow them... thus the birth of what looks like we're directing a plane on a runway. It is clear to read once you learn how. Our band continues to use it even though not necessary solely out of tradition. We hold this tradition close to us, not to create a spectacle of ourselves, but bc we love it.

because that style is so easy to keep time in
@trancinar
@trancinar 14 жыл бұрын
And I agree, the style can be a little ambiguous and hard to read sometimes. But again, we do it mainly out of tradition. That's why we conduct mostly with what we call "free style" conducting, or what most schools conduct with. The other stuff we do with our arms is just flair we do that is simply just more tradition. If you can't tell, we have a lot of traditions, haha.

@trancinar Alright...so why is it that IUP conducts that way? I mean, I always thought a field commander was there to conduct and keep the band in time but I find it hard to keep in time when different arm movements are happening.

Okay here's an example. Look at Cal U at Allentown, something everyone gets invited to. Watch IUP at Giant's stadium the only collegiate band invited to exemplify what a band should look and sound like. Hmm why wasn't Cal U invited...

@Avedisdrummer09 For the record, I would have loved to sit around and watch the other bands play. We went to perform a few other shows I think that weekend so our schedule was tight. So sue us if you want. Us not sticking around is beyond our control.

Well... I guess immitation is the greatest form of flattery. Cal will never sound or move like IUP... ever. But, I always enjoyed seeing the Cal Band. They were entertaining. I would give to them at least that... most Legend alums wouldn't even do that. I will have to look around for your latest stuff since the old director left. I always like his style of music selection, too. Nevertheless, very funny video.

@PenguinAndJacobLover Its because they did not own podiums back in the day. Also it's called a tradition I guess you do not understand that.

@musicfanatic35 Having fun and being disrespectful are two different things. I've never seen any other band personally disrespect another band other than Cal U and Clarion. I guess camaraderie of the arts does not exist anymore.

@brysnare13 Our "classical" style is OUR classical style, not THE classical style. And we are not the only school that uses our style of conducting. Schools that come to our drum major academy learn classical conducting and take it back to their high schools. There are at LEAST three high schools I know of that use it. And I agree with the rivalry, but people make fun of the style they don't understand passed the point of being friendly. It's just not appreciated.

@55MrCalifornia Our band director teaches classes second semester, he was just on sabbatical last year. Every band has a different style, you might not like ours but that doesn’t mean yours is better. And by 'concert band' I assume you mean 'in tune'? thanks then. We really don't care about our football team either, so stop talking about things you apparently don’t understand.
@2juliagulia2

@Avedisdrummer09 Why is our conducting our "antics"? It's simply a tradition we use and practice carefully to keep. We do not mean to be a spectacle and we don't shove it in anyone's face. You can take it or leave it, but please do not mock us or attack us for it. "Rival schools" or not, please give us respect for something we hold close to us.
@skalover517
@skalover517 14 жыл бұрын
@cuteguardgrl06 The reason the band does not come to other schools football games is because of how little respect other schools have for music. IUP used to go to away games, but bands like Cal U disrespected them completely destroyed the bond bands have with each other. Thank you Cal U for being disrespectful. It's is sometimes about poking fun, but then the arts are hurting so much you're really not helping at all. I hope you're proud.

look, I'm in the IUP Marching Band and one of the first things they told us at the beginning of band camp this year was not to make fun of classical conducting. I know you guys are just having fun, but it is kind of sad to see one of our oldest traditions being mocked. I don't care who's better than who, we each have our own style, I just wish we could stop bashing each other like insecure highschoolers

Why are you all arguing with each other? I personally go to IUP and am a proud member of the Legend. I have never insulted Cal U and never intend to. I wish everybody could just respect each other's band and move on. I mean, this video is a little silly, but that doesn't mean I'm going to write a comment that bashes their whole marching band. Why can't everybody be nice? :(

First off, The Cal band isnt too busy "Legending" all the time to and actually goes to their football games and plays over 40 different stand charts now...so were not expected to have them memorized. Dont you guys just play charge and ghostbusters every two seconds?

yeah, although at some point I may have participated in the overly dramatic yelling, screaming, and shouting at one another, I would have to agree with Avedisdrummer09 that none of this is personal, and anyone who actually hates another band is being ridiculous

@IUPoboeplayer Haha...I don't even go to CalU, but get over yourself. When your battery decides to do something other than stand in a block the whole time, then you can say something. They are having a little bit of fun, so who cares. There isn't a correct way to conduct, but it just so happens that IUPs style is very different from most. Its not that big of a deal, honestly.

@musicfanatic35 Well I feel horrible for Cal, because they sound horrible. I'm glad you told me this though, because this is a great example of how a band should not sound.

IUP's band doesn't attend away games for this exact reason - other schools make fun of something they don't understand. If you want to know why we conduct that way, ask us instead of imitating it poorly. It would also help if you knew how to conduct 5/4. Learn how to conduct a basic pattern before trying another one. And again, flip folders? Last I checked, we are collegiate bands. You should be able to memorize your music. Before making fun of others, make sure you can back it up.

@bnshultz09 Taking offense to this has nothing to do with lacking a sense of humor. Being mocked is not something most consider to be entertaining or amusing. And while being defensive and retaliating to others' mocking us may be immature to an extent, going down the line on multiple comments and attempting to put people in their place isn't any better. So welcome to the club.
@trancinar
@trancinar 13 жыл бұрын
@bnshultz09 First of all, there was no flipping out on my end. And again, for the hundredth time, we take offense to people "having fun" at our tradition's expense. We could easily do the same to Cal U's "repertoire" and their 30+ stand tunes. Trust me, we would also consider it pretty funny at your expense. But notice that we don't. How about everyone growing up and be proud of what they have. You're not in high school anymore - maturity should increase, not stay the same.

@ClubHertzog Hahaha man I wish you knew that SRU is the laughing stock of the music community and not even in marching band terms. SRU gives school districts a reason to cut band programs they are terrible. I'm glad you guys have one trumpet player who over-plays the entire ensemble. Well good luck to you in all that you do. I'm sure Juilliard will look at your SRU degree and welcome you with open arms.

@brysnare13 I did. I hate IUP. Like I've been old school hating IUP since like '95 and they were actually good then. Now they lost sight of what a college band is supposed to be. And as for allentown I saw 3 people actually fall asleep during their performance and a group actually boo when they were done. It's sad when SRU has a better marching band than you do IUP.

Furthermore, our football team actually likes us to be there. Secondly, The "classical" style of conducting that you claim IUP has is bull. It was created at IUP by IUP for IUP. Nowhere else would anyone consider conducting in a way where the beat is unclear. It looks as silly when our field commander does it when you do it. Look at any Drum Corp drum major and tell me how they conduct... Thirdly, its a friendly rivalry... Its all in good fun...were supposed to bash on each other.

@pirch80 Haha okay I've seen the way your audience's act at a concert, they thing it's horrible. If you want to knock our marching band you should probably go to a school that sounds good off or on the field. If you really want to fight about it come to IUP and say stuff to our faces because we will play you under the table. Did Frank Ticheli come to your school to guest conduct because you have a prestigious composer there?? I didn't think so.

@55MrCalifornia this video is not hilarious. you cant even call us a concert band. our wind ensemble could easily wipe the floor with you guys. we dont even equate to a concert band on the field. we are a marching band that actually sounds good and plays in tune. you could create a band with every member or the oboe studio playing a different instrument and it would sound better than your band. i no longer respect CalU or their band
