Great video and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! To slow concrete/cement down from drying too quickly you can run a very wet sponge over the bottoms (when they are still in the molds) a few times to keep them wet longer. Cement is actually better if it stays wet longer.

At 14:26 you say it's ready to unmold in 3-4 hours. No, it isn't. Concrete cures and strengthens with moisture, so when you pull it out of the mold early, you are exposing the entire surface area to the air and slowing the curing. If it dries out too much, like you are doing, it will stop curing, and you cannot restart the process. Somewhere else in the video you mentioned covering the bottom (top) with plastic wrap. That is what you should do, always to retain moisture inside the curing concrete. If you absolutely have to pull the pot out of the mold at 3-4 hours, then immediately submerge it in a bucket of water and leave it as long as is practical, up to 28 DAYS for maximum strength. I realize there are other considerations for production of pots for sale, but trying to rush through the curing process is going to result in more broken pots, and dissatisfied customers, than you need. I might suggest leaving it in the mold, covered with plastic, for 7-8 hours, remove the mold, sand the bottom edge, and then submerge the pot in water for at least 24 hours as a bare minimum.
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
For something much larger than what I’m demonstrating, I can see how that would be the case. I’ve personally reached out to cement-all before and have discussed my process with them. They themselves said for something so small like a candle jar, water bathing is a completely unnecessary step. For something much larger like a driveway…it’s definitely necessary. I’m happy to report I haven’t ever had any broken jars using my method. I always recommend doing whatever works best for you, though. Of course, you don’t have to do it the way I do it. I just share my videos to help others learn and provide some inspiration. Thank you for the kind comment! Have a wonderful day.

I’m just starting out with my vessel making journey. My first three were fine for what they were but after trying the 3:1 method in an attempt to increase fluidity but wound up with cracks in the bottom of the vessels. Yesterday I purchased the flow additive and this morning I rewatched this video. Can you describe what you mean about adding too much affecting the appearance of the jar? Sprinkling isn’t my friend so I have a set of measuring spoons, tad, pinch etc, so I can replicate my measurements from batch to batch. I do have one observation, as a mixed medium maker. I find it easier to measure small quantities of pigment using a jeweler’s scale and mini Dixie cups. Linda
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
Personally, when adding too much of the flow control I found some streaky looking marks on the vessels. May not be the case for everyone, but that was my experience! If you add too much water, you could definitely experience cracks.

In your video you mention that you prior concrete was setting up too quickly in the winter. This is likely because concrete manufactures put additives in the mix for different times of the year to help the customers fight the changing elements. So in winter they include additives to help it hydrate quick even in really low temps. But as always you may want to confirm with each manufacture what they do.

@@calafiacandleco Thank you for your response ☺️ I’ve been using demineralised water. I live in Europe and where I’m at, distilled water isn’t as common. But I thought that demineralised would be the same? Maybe I’m wrong. The weird thing is that these discolouration lines are just around the bottom half of the vessel. Not sure if I can add a photo here.

You have been so amazing helpful, I appreciate it so much! Curious, if you have a scent that isn't as popular as you expected (or over made for the seasonal line), can you re-liquify and reuse the concrete jar for another candle? Would it just need to be cleaned and re-sealed?
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
As long as you reseal, I would think you totally can. I would definitely test before selling though just to make sure it’s all acting like it should. 😊

Hi, do you need to cure this in water ?
@calafiacandleco10 ай бұрын
I never do. Some choose to. It’s a preference thing, in my opinion.

Hi Bree, You are so inspiring!❤ May I ask what size wick you would recommend when making these jars? Thank you SO much for sharing your recipe with all of us!❤
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Julie! That's a hard question to answer because wicking depends on so many different factors, like type of wax or fragrance oil. I would recommend looking at wicking guides for your type of wax with a 3" diameter jar.

Quick question can I use resin molds for this or do I have to get concrete specific molds?
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
You can use resin molds, but just know they may not hold up as well since they aren’t made for concrete.

Great video!! How do you wash your molds? How often? I use distilled water to mix my cement all, but wash my molds with tap water. I noticed I’m still getting spots on my jar. I’m thinking it’s because I’m washing them with tap water???
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Crissy! I do wash with tap water and a little dawn dish soap. I make sure to wipe them dry right away though. I use blue shop towels to wipe them off.

Cement all alternative?
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
Hi there! There are lots of other options. I'm not too keen on other formulas, but I would recommend checking out Up Vibe here on youtube. Jai has lots of videos showcasing other formulas besides cement-all. I do also have a recent video on hydrostone if you'd like to check that out.

Question, & correct me if I’m wrong but so isn’t the normal cure time 28-30 days (or is it only a couple days since these are hollow) for concrete? & so if u sell these, when do you list them? Sorry if my question doesn’t make sense, I’m new to all this lol
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
Yes, 28 days is the approximate cure time for full strength. I, and many others, personally find they are ready to go after the weight starts to level off (about 7 days for me). If someone wishes to wait the full 28 days, they absolutely could. However, I don't find it it necessary. Do you mean when do I add the product as inventory to my website? I wait until the candle is poured and has had about 5 days to cure. Then by the time the candle arrives to the customer, it will have cured about a week (which is what I find works for my wax combo). So all in all, it's about a 13 day process from start to finish.

What happens if you get little tiny bubbles even tho you tap and bounce them around for some time? I’m currently having this issue
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I have had that happen before in the past. I've found it could be from using too much water, or it can happen with certain bags of cement-all. Some bags perform differently from others.

Are you no longer using the Eco Advance Sealer? Which do you prefer?
@calafiacandleco Жыл бұрын
Hey Alisha! I am still using earth safe for now. I had quite a few people reach out to say they have experienced seepage with the eco advance, even several weeks after pouring candles. For that reason, I haven't made the switch. I will probably test the eco advance out a bit more sometime soon.

I use a KN95. You could also use a respirator if you’d like.
