Volcano Calbuco erupted on April 22, 2015, Exactly 5 years ago from the date of upload of this video.
I went through an extensive remastering process to bring you this footage in new sharpness and detail. Also some unusable scenes from before could be rescued and extended this cut.
Original Video Description:
Located close to the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt in southern Chile. We (Jonas Dengler and Martin Heck) spend the prior couple of days on the neighboring volcano Osorno (~20km linear distance) shooting timelapses. After an amazing night under the nightsky we took the cable car downwards after a delay caused by repairs. Already late we headed south to catch the ferry on Routa 7 down to Patagonia. After 10min on the ferry we noticed a massive, almost nuclear looking cloud boiling upwards just were we left a few hours ago. Frenetically looking for a good outlook we then rushed to the only non-forested place to get a decent view of the show. We quickly put every bit of camera-equipment we could find on the constantly growing mushroom-cloud. We shot timelapses in 8K and 4K with a Pentax 645Z and Canon 6D. On the A7s we shot 4K video to the Shogun using Kingston HyperX SSDs. We filled almost all of our memory cards in the prior night so I had to do backups while shooting all this stuff.
This was for sure the most incredible show I've ever seen. I think this is a one in a lifetime event and I am so happy that we were able to capture it in all its glory.
We will also release a timelapse video of our 6 weeks trip to Patagonia soon.

I was in high school at that time, I live in a town named Alerce, 25km away from the volcano. It was terrifying, many people were panicking. That fear of not knowing what to do, watching the plum of smoke rising... The same night, another eruption began and we could hear the roaring sound that gave us chills.

these type of cloud formations are one of the best spectacle to watch in timelapse. sometimes even clouds on routine days have similar formations and those are one of my best to shoot and enjoy over and over in timelapse. so for me personally this was a visually orgasmic experience.no comments can be made about your craft.

I still remember that day I was on my house with my dad. To this day I don't know why but out of spite I got curious and watched outside the window only to see a gigantic mass of ash that already passed over my house at that point. I run to tell my dad when he went completely silent looking up, we didn't know If I was going to be a serious treat to the city so we decided to go to the supermarket for some supplies just in case we went in and I was still a blue sky but then when we got outside the sky expanded From an orange tone expanding to a completely reddish tone and these colors where impacting on the gigantic mushroom of ash and by far in my whole life I haven't seen something as beautiful as that I was incredible there are no words to describe it been there looking at something kilometers away and still looking up and felling is on top of you. since the city of Puerto Montt is not a big city in a clear day you can see the two closest volcanoes perfectly so I was something I will remember for the rest of my life.
