My dentist was the best. They cured my dental anxiety which was like 500/10 and now I'm at like 2/10. Only needed 3 fillings which was so great. Didn't feel anything, not even the needles which was the part I was most scared. The best part was that they worked me in same day as my very first appointment so I didn't have to be anxious about another appointment. I can't wait to go back to my 6 month cleaning. Complete 180 for me. Happy to help if you need.

I had a wisdom tooth extraction with sedation yesterday. I battled to have it done under general anaesthetic due to extreme nervousness and anxiety but I was refused. I worried that the sedation itself might set off anxiety but it honestly made me feel very relaxed and at ease. 👋 Anyone reading the comments about to have their surgery … let me explain my experience. ( I got them out 5 hours ago ) I WAS A NERVOUS WRECK before hand watching every video possible reading all experiences on reddit and comments on these videos from the good ones to the bad ones. I’ve been nervous since they told me last year they were coming in. It was a peice of CAKE for the people like me who have severe anxiety about medical stuff you will be just fine! I wasn’t worried about the recovery more so the surgery itself, and a little stressed about the IV ( i was put to sleep with IV sedation ) the IV was NOTHING me and the assistant were giggling and I was asking if I should watch him put it in or look away and he promised me it was nothing and maybe id enjoy watching it go in.. I looked away 😭 but it barley felt like anything, like a poke a tiny little prick. they put the thing on to check my blood pressure every 5 minutes and the thing on ur thumb along with some like patches they put on my lower side and chest. Sat there for about 30 minutes with the IV in my arm until the doctor was ready. He came in asked how I was lowered the chair down and put this thing on my neck to monitor my breathing I think he said,, and then he released THE GOOD ( the fluids into the IV ) it was a crazy experience.. like i was out but wasn’t ? all i last remember is seeing is the light and then within seconds it was done. I was so stressed for NOTHING. so glad I went with IV sedation because I didn’t feel a darn thing! 😂 and the loopyness afterwards ain’t all that bad either. I would definitely do it over again and take away all the stress from before because it was nothing.

I had a wisdom tooth out with sedation yesterday. I was extremely nervous about it and it went very well. All the staff were very friendly and smiling. The sedation wasn't as strong as I expected but it did the job. Maybe they didn't give me as much since my blood pressure was slightly low beforehand. The medication definitely made me feel relaxed and at ease. I had been scared that the medication itself might set off my anxiety. There were two occasions where they were pulling the tooth out and I could feel pain so I told them and they gave me two more injections. They seemed surprised that I could feel pain but at least they listened to me. They said 'you will feel pushing and pulling.' (as if I was confusing that with pain but I know what pain feels like.) At one point I asked for more sedation and the guy said 'If you hadn't had the sedation you wouldn't be letting us do this...When you go out drinking with friends I bet you're the one who always wants another drink.' (I thought that was a weird thing to say since I don't drink alcohol, but I replied 'No it's just I was expecting the sedation to be stronger.' They wouldn't give me any more as it was doing its job.) At the time I was aware of everything but then afterwards the memory gets a bit hazy in some places. It only seemed to take 5 minutes to get the tooth out. I think I very vaguely remember them saying something about the root being twisted or difficult to get out but I don't know if I imagined it. I slept a lot at home later and surprisingly had no pain. My advice to anyone is don't be nervous, the sedation honestly does what it needs to do. I hope I'm not scaring anyone by saying that I felt some pain; due to the numbing and the sedation my experience of pain was not as bad as it would be normally and they stopped what they were doing and gave me another injection anyway so it was fine.

Seriously, it depends upon the skill of your health care provider. An IV can be setup on the back of your hand, which is more accessible. They should be able to do the sedation. Follow their pre-op instructions and have someone drive you home. GOOD LUCK!

Sometimes veins are tough to find. We identify that in the pre-op appt. For those patients, we make some recommendations. We have them drink a lot of water the night before (but still nothing after midnight) so that they are not dehydrated when they come in. We also have them dress warmly and even wear gloves. As you are likely aware, when your arms/hands are cold, your veins constrict. Lastly, there are several techniques the health care provider can employ. Good luck!

I have chronic throat discomfort and I can't go for very long without something keeping saliva flowing. With that being said, I also have a gag reflex that may be considered severe. I am in need of dental work completed, but I haven't been able to go to the dentist since I was around 10 years old. I am now 32 and I have looked into various dentist offices here in my hometown, but none of them offer the environment I need. Sidenote: My flight instructor is a dentist, and even though I trusted him fully, I just couldn't stand the thought of having an accident during the procedure. I really don't know what to do at this point. I have been to an ENT recently and had endoscopy performed, and the doctor said there were no signs of any obstructions or cancerous tissue. If the roughness in my throat were to settle down I may could handle the procedure, but it has been with me for several years now and I am not very hopeful that it will diminish at this point in my life. Anyway, I think it is nice that you offer your services as I am sure it helps with any anxiety your patients would otherwise experience. Robert III

I had a tooth extraction done earlier today. It was my very first time getting a tooth removed. Let me tell you it hurt really bad. The oral surgeon that I was referred to by my dentist did use non drousy anesthesia just cause I told her I didn't want to be put to sleep. If I ever have to get another tooth removed again in my life I'm most likely gonna ask the oral surgeon to put me to sleep. I guess you live and you learn. 🤷♂️

It is just sedation, not full anesthesia. Outside the US it is rare to get it for a single tooth extraction (people just put up with the short term pain or stress), and dentists are not considered in the business of IV sedation - too many risks in a dental office without a qualified doctor MD. Proper anesthesia should only be done in a hospital with a qualified anesthetist, not a local dentist's office.

In moderate (aka twilight) sedation, you still administer local anesthesia (aka the novocaine shot). That way, the patient feels no pain during the procedure. And the IV sedation keeps them comfortable and gives them nearly complete amnesia of the procedure.

I got IV sedation for a lot of extractions. Expensive but worth it to me. One day I had a toothache so bad I had to make an appt first thing in the morning and they told me to come right in. So I couldnt schedule my normal IV procedure. I was terrified. Got a few shots and didnt even barely feel them. Got me so numb i couldnt even feel that I had teeth. Completely painless. Really kicked myself for all the money I wasted on sedation. Now if you are getting several out or wisdom teeth go for it. But don't waste your money when getting a single tooth pulled. The modern nerve blockers and numbing agents they use will have you feeling nothing except pressure from them tugging on ya but no pain.

Olivia. I have a severe phobia of the dentist. I have had for years. Even the thought of it terrifies me. The phobia started since I had a bad experience (more than once) with the old skool dentist. Some years years later, I had another bad experience. Now at 45 I am still petrified and even walking through the door fills me with fear and palpitations. I spend the whole time in the dentist chair (even just for a check-up) gripping on to the chair arms. I had my first sedation around 15 years ago and I can say it was quite an experience, more for my partner and the dental guys (and taxi driver home) than me :D I apparently told all the dental nurses, the dentist and the receptionists all about how to keep aquarium fish, how to check the PH levels and the Nitrates (I think they were very bored come the end but found it hilarious). On the way back in the cab all I spoke about was mash potato. I was hungry and my partner asked me what I wanted to eat when I got home, I could have anything I liked, he said. So off I went about mash potato (one of my favourite things). Ha-ha! My partner said I had the whole clinic in stitches! I did tell them a very personal thing :/ But I guess you have no filters under sedation, and I really couldn't care afterwards, I was just so relieved it was over. I had sedation again 2 years ago and am about to have more sedation (after breaking my tooth on a peanut M&M, fml). I can honestly tell you that you will not have any recollection of anything after you sit in the chair. You can hear them, answer them (like if they say to open wider, that kind of thing) but you are in such a dreamy state you are just not aware of it. I remember nothing whatsoever. They called it a night on the town, it is the equivalent of drinking a bottle of vodka - without the side effects :D I was a little concerned on my second sedation as I heard they don't use quite as much of the drug as they used to, but I never needed to worry. They used to give too high amounts and patients took forever to come round, and it didn't need to be such a heavy dose. It was just as much a breeze as the last time - I was still extremely out of it. I always take longer to come round from any anaesthetic (I just love sleep too much) so I always find myself to be an extra 20 minutes in the recovery. If anyone can put you at ease, and make you feel reassured about sedation and that you won't feel or remember a thing, it is me!! ;) I love sedation and you wouldn't get me through the door without it. All the best! :)

@@megandonohoe5124, this is the beauty of "IV sedation" aka "twilight sedation." In this depth of sedation, the patient is in control of his/her reflexes (ie - breathing, gag reflex, bladder control, etc.) and can respond to simple commands. But the patient has no memory. And because of the sedation and the novocaine, he/she feels no pain. IV sedation avoids the significant risks of general anesthesia.
