Doing that, your calculator will treat your scientific notation number like different numbers instead of grouping the numbers together unless you put paranthesis around them. I guess the [Exp] button is more reliable than [Shift]+[Log]

How do you input a negative scientific notation to decimal notation on the Ti-84?
@JoeLinux20006 жыл бұрын
Not sure exactly what you are asking, but a positive exponent defines the place value, for example 10, 100, 1000 and so on. A negative exponent provides the decimal place: .1, .01, .001, and so on. Experiment with your calculator. That's why these scientific calculators are so helpful in actually understanding the number system. You can do a lot of practice without breaking your brain.
@LHSAtkins9 жыл бұрын
Hard to say since I don't know what type of calculator you are using, but generally you can take a 5th root one of two ways. There should be a button somewhere that says "X(sqrt)y" that allows you to take an arbitrary root of a number. (In your case, X = 5 for fifth root). If that doesn't make sense, try this: raise the number you want to take the fifth root of to the 1/5 power like this: 32^(1/5)...if you're doing it right that argument should produce a result of 2.
@JoeLinux20006 жыл бұрын
Totally cool. I found 2 slightly different ways of entering it into my Android App calculator. The starting button is "x to an unknown power". You are a great math teacher, and really know your stuff. Thank you so much for the solution to this one. I knew it had to be the inverse in some way, but did not know how to enter it until you gave the expression.

as a old man who used (paper) logarithm tables, using exponents made sens in that context. on contemporary (2021) calculators you have to know about this stuff if you're dealing with very big/small numbers. but then again you should know the logarithm base ten and the arithmatic of powers. without that context i'd rather not learn Scientific Notation. anyway, with that precision, i could also use a slide rule without any disadvantages.
@hermask8154 жыл бұрын
(log(3.07)+4)-(log(6.2)-3)=6.694746686; 10^6.694746686=4951612,903. for precision i guess 4951000 is accurate enough given the values we started with.

I hate to tell you this, but I tried to follow along with my calculator and only got as far at 3.07E. When I hit the "divide" key the E disappeared, and I have no idea how the enter the numbers after that. Could it be your kids don't know how to work the calculator because your explanation is very unclear? I would recommend doing it on one calculator at a time as opposed to three different ones all at the same time.
@JoeLinux20006 жыл бұрын
I eventually learned how to do it watching other videos. Rewatching your video, I found it quite informative. It seems your video is best for someone who sort of knows what they are doing already, as your video points up all the differences in the entry of scientific notation can lead to severe problems in the placement of the decimal. FWIW to get the result of your Math Department issued calculator, I have to use 1E-3 as the final entry. So it would be (3.07E4 / 6.2) x 1E-3, which results in 4.95~ which is curiously 4.95E3 or 4950 which is similar to your other answers.
