That fire looks like a horrifically ramped up version of an epic disaster movie! I wouldn't like to have to try and insure those properties which have been built deep in those forests of pine trees without any fire-breaks.

Generally the term "Wildland-Urban Interface" refers to development which has spread further and further into undeveloped wildlands, not the other way around. These communities are increasingly common in the west, and are at higher risk for wildfire. You're correct that the area is very densely forested and it appears that some of the homes there haven't cleared their defensible space.

@Mike Sims Absolutely right and sorry for your loss. I agree that the standard defensible space doesn't help much in extreme fire conditions, but it does help in more normal conditions such as in the recent River fire, where multiple homes were saved. It is noticeable though that in some more densely forested communities, such as some of the areas around the Caldor fire, it appears there are many trees close to and even touching homes, even though Calfire has given clear directions for some years on maintenance of defensible space.

Always act before the smoke/fire cuts you off from the roadway out from your home, even if the smoke/fire is not at your home. And think of the traffic that you may run into. Stay ahead of the situation! Can't get insurance, can't hold PG&E accountable (thanks Newsom!) if they're responsible, so what do home owners do? Invest in fire protectant foam.
