@Bard Erland for Mezzo-soprano? Is that being realistic or just asking a little too much? Maybe after her voice has fully matured. Who knows what her limits will be. Thought she did pretty good for only being 13 during this performance.

@Bard Erland What do you mean by arie? You mean Aria?
@ragnarkisten
@ragnarkisten 4 жыл бұрын
@Bard Erland Why should she sing an aria? Classical singing does not fit everybody, particularly when there is so much else that is really becoming of your voice. However, with her agile coloratura, I suspect her to have a good aptitude for baroque music. If you listen to her Whitney Houston cover, you can clearly hear that she has the potential to reach very high notes, considering she can go so low. But it also becomes clear that she has technical restraints in reaching those notes. She even gets hoarse, but no wonder considering the range of the song. She can fix this, but she is so young and her instrument needs to develop further. I am so pleased she has stayed away from big operatic repertoire. It gives me the creeps every time a child tries to belt out a song they are not ready for. I am not trying to scoff the talent, but there are just some things that takes time, and big dramatic pieces are not meant for children. But what she is doing at an incredibly young age seems so relaxed and natural. I dont think I have ever heard a child singer sing a song with such authenticity and ease. Listen to little big shots version of fly me to the moon for instance. It is like the instrument and the song emerges into a higher entity. Opposed to her hardcore fans, I am not trying to convince everyone that she sounds great all the time. Some things are more fitting than other things, and that whole attitude is ridiculous in the first place. It is like demanding a top athlete to take gold all the time, it just does not work that way. I salute her in her boldness and experimenting with different repertoire and styles to find herself and her voice!
@Dave-jo1hf
@Dave-jo1hf 4 жыл бұрын
@@ragnarkisten I completely agree. She has limitation, I heard her Whitney cover before they processed it. She was really pushing her limits which is great in my mind. Her belting has improved drastically since then. After observing her vast repertoire, she seems very comfortable with the freedom her jazzy style lends her. though some classic training would definitely help especially with her longer runs such 04:36 where she transitions from head voice to chest voice.
@ragnarkisten

@Bard Erland Decent and beautiful is in the eye of the beholder, dont you think? I regard jazz equally, or even more so, beautiful to classical singing. There are certain aspects of classical training that can be very healthy for every singer. I agree with you there. Particularly in the capacity of projecting a big sound without coming across forced. However, my experience tells me that there are so many singer that have ruined their voice in pursuing an operatic career. The ability to sing powerful without strain is extremely difficult for most singers. And also when you use a microphone, you dont need that extreme type of projection. I also regard the breathy tone she makes, healthy. I am more concerned about her belting notes. In this performance, even more so than BR, I find the projection quite healthy really. If you compare her to another singer, Connie Talbot, A. has a much more healthy rendition. That does not mean that I dont appreciate Talbots talent or voice, but it is more strained than Angelinas.

Surprise, surprise! Angelina is an artist, she does all the arrangements and yes, she plays gittar, piano, flute and violin author of stoties speaks 4-5 languages paints all under the tutorage of her grandmother who is a highly asteemed iranian artist/ painter. The patterns on her clothes are a copy. Bleesed with a captivating tone but hours of craft practice. P.S. loves the company of her sister. And I'm sure you know the story of 'the barefeet. Age aside, what a gift we have.

Caleb, I appreciate your comparison of Angelina's voice to an instrument when she embellishes her lyrics. Being an old-school jazz musician, I hold Ella Fitzgerald as the gold standard for embellishments, riffs, runs, whatever you want to call them. She would not only emulate the improvisation of the great instrumentalists of her day, she created her own style that set her apart from everyone else. She always stayed within the changes of the music and never did too much or too little, just the right amount. So many of today's singers do "vocal gymnastics" without really understanding the musicality that is required to sing riffs. Through training and sheer innate ability, Angelina "gets it" and we, her audience, are immensely fortunate to listen to her artistry!

You said it right, that her voice is like a guitarist doing a solo. I always say her voice is like an orchestra with different sections. Those beautiful riffs & runs was just the melisma section showing off for the American audience. Her vibrato section is equally amazing, along with the rasp, vocal fry & every other vocal ornament section you can think of. That's why she is best with minimal backing of a soft acoustic guitar or piano that keeps time while she uses that orchestral voice, almost a capella, to give you the chills. Her voice is so complex & you ain't seen nothin yet! You have so many more voices to hear & I can't wait to see your reactions. I also can't wait to see what she does tonight on the AGT Grand Finale. Her cover of Adele's "A Million Years Ago" that she did at 12 yo is stunning & makes a good reaction.

I like your analysis of this and of other vocalists. It’s great to hear informed comments from another singer. I agree with what you said, but I’d like to add something from a non-musician. Your explanation of her vocal techniques is great, but what makes me such a fan of Angelina and keeps me watching her videos over and over is her voice. It’s so rich, deep, and sensual that it’s mesmerizing. I don’t want the audience to applaud because I don’t want to miss any part of her performance. You’ve only heard her as a jazz singer here and in Bohemian Rhapsody. I’d suggest her cover of Adele’s “A Million Years Ago” for a completely different, beautiful sound. She commits to the lyrics like no one else. And I’m sure you’ll get requests to watch her black and white video of “I Put a Spell on You” from when she was 9 or 10. It’s a sort of novelty in her catalog of performances, but just staggering. If you didn’t see it, you wouldn’t believe a child could sing like this-channeling an era long gone.

I love some of the details you picked up on there. The way she sang "woods" I noticed the first time I heard this, but nobody in all the reactions has mentioned it. That little vibrato she puts on certain things is just master level. I also like how you equated her sing to playing her voice like an instrument. If you go back and listen to her bohemian, you will hear that the belt she does after "never been born at all" mimicks the guitar riff at that spot in the original song. It's the little things like that that make her the best singer I have ever listened to. There's just so much detail in everything she sings. I look forward to more Angelina reaction/analysis from you :)

@Norwegian Lobster "How many ways are there to sing woods?" Is that a philosophical question? ...like how many angels fit on the head of a pin? I suppose both of those questions could have similar answers ...and since you have hidden the rest of your comment behind a google translate wall, most people will not bother to read it. ....so I will make it easier.... here's a translation of the brilliant Mr Lobster : "Hmpf ... Scat! Ella Fitzgerald has a huge influence. Some singer just sing. Angelina treats her voice as an actual instrument and she plays it in that she is very deliberate in the notes she sings. Each note and phrase down to how she pronounces each word has been thought out and placed for a reason. Genius at work.

AJ is working some of the most talented Artist is LA: AJ is in a lane of her own that no one is the universe can enter. AJ epitomizes the word ARTIST. With the type of attributes, I just mention AJ will be popular to all ages throughout her career because she in composes the versatility to perform any, and all genres. AJ is working with talent like Monte Lipman, head of Republic Records, and Bernard “Harv” Harvey is an American music producer, composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles, California that has produced highly acclaimed work for major recording artists such as Justin Bieber, Sevyn Streeter, Juke Ross, Cherish, Omarion, Gucci Mane and Eminem. Harv was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. He was introduced to the musical arts at the young age of nine and began playing the bass by age twelve. Harv attended J.C. Harmon High School where his love for music elevated joining the marching band, jazz band and playing different types of music all around the city. Throughout his life he was taught to play the piano, guitar, drums, trombone, and even the tuba. Yet, Harv is best known for his mastery of the bass. In 2003, Harv’s exceptional talent on the bass became recognized on a merit-based level and landed him a scholarship at Alabama State University where he obtained a degree in Music Technology. He began playing in church and local bands ultimately sharpening his musical ear, which led him to expanding his interest in production. With music flowing in his blood, he was enticed with the aspects of production and decided to capitalize on his talents in Atlanta, Georgia working day in and day out on compositions. As Harv began making connections in Atlanta in 2007, he quickly established a friendship with Grammy-winning producer Shondrea Bangladesh Crawford. Harv played bass guitar on a few major placements produced by his friend Bangladesh such as “Lemonade” by Gucci and “A Kiss” by Eminem. In 2010, Harv hit the road playing the bass for Scooter Braun’s artist, Justin Bieber. After catching wind that Harv also produced music, Scooter expressed his interest in signing Harv as a producer to publishing company Sheba Publishing. Harv signed his first publishing deal with Sheba and Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) in 2011 and is continually building his catalog and growing his production company. Harv produced 3 songs on Justin Biebers new album “Changes”. “Available”, “At Least For Now” & “Forever” ft Post Malone and Clever.

NOTE! Angelina refused to agree to the binding agreements in AGT, but I think they were aware of this, but still wanted her to attend to bring as many viewers as possible. Then there was no way she could win. The entire acclaimed music industry knows who she is, and she was invited to sing for Quincy Jones during his 85th birthday at O2 Arena London kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX7OqKKnirOBoac . She has also collaborated with David Foster, Gene Simmons, Alan Walker. In addition to singing at the Nobel Prize concert 8 year old. She has also sung for Obama. This is just something from her résumé at 14 years old and the list is much longer. So it was really AGT that she was lucky that she showed up. But as I said, AGT is just a TV show and not a competition. Calling it a Talent Competition is too stupid. The only thing that was real is all the amazing talents we saw and heard. Note! She is also Norway's youngest author with published book 9 years old! Composer Nico Cartosio especially wrote a piece that he wanted Angelina to perform vocally. It became an epic piece, listen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKCWnpuuhbJgq6M Angelina is independent and owns the rights herself. Angelina Jordan INC. She and her family take it easy because of her young age. Angelina wants total ownership over her creativity, without compromise. She / family said no to Disney, among other things. She attends some major foundrising concerts. Rumor has it that she is coming up with her own album this year.

Start with her very best, "Stray," in an extraordinary live performance. This is the official vid, professionally recorded. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZnPf5KEls14bNk Had just turned 15. It is like everything that requires learning the fundamentals. You can get proficient by practice, but the real artists have that special something. They see and hear the world differently. Their imagination can go to places the rest of us can't. Heck we couldn't even see there was a direction to go, let alone follow it to be able create a new approach to a problem or challenge. I am making a mess out of this, so I'm going to stop and quit while I'm behind. If any of you can make sense out of this then you know what I am trying to say. Maybe that's my point. There are most of us that see things a certain way and that is it. Then there are those who see a different way to go or do something, but do not have the talent to do anything with the new information. Then there are those who see the way but can do something with it. Those are the artists and whether it is Music, Painting, Literature, or the guy who can take a vehicle apart and rebuild it into a show vehicle. Angelina is like that. She hears a song, runs it through that wonderful brain of hers and out comes this. Sure she has had influences, who doesn't, but she can do something with that information to do something new and fresh. The song has her commitment and soul wrapped up in it, so when she sings it we believe her. We believe the story she is telling us. Did I make it better or worse, who knows, I'm one of those from the first rung of this ladder. So if it helps great, if not, then welcome to my world that's what goes on in my brain, all day long. Sheesh!!

I m like you David, even though i m not a musician. I want to know the secret, but i ll never know it since it is a secret. To be a true vocal artist, i always said that musicians hear sounds that we cannot hear. Angelina hears sounds and words that i do not hear. She pronounces words differently as an artist. She creates proper pronounciations for the lyrics she did not create: in This is a Man s World, she has her own diction, different than that of James Brown himself! Anyway, i agree totally with you when you say that true artists see and hear the world diffently. So true and so key to understand and appreciate them, and to let ourselves be loved by them!

Great video. She has a lot of good work, but "i put a spell on you"(black and withe video is best) and "million years ago" was the two that really stood out for me, so i would recommend those.

Please try 'I am still holding out for you'. I consider this her best work. I love every second of it. Her voice is hauntingly mesmerizing in that video, more than any other covers. And that said a lot. Trust me with this one.

Caleb Coles Music You must be aware that she have said that she will never sing this song again - because of the suicide aspect of the song. She was asked by the Autor of the song to record it, she did, but withdraw it when she got aware of this. When that is said, she does a phenomenal job, and I am sure this song will live on KZbin regardless. Hope you just have this in mind when you react.

I love your comments/analysis! This is a difficult, complicated song but she nailed it and, although she patterned it to Sara Bareilles' version, still made it her own. It's really amazing how, at 13, she is able to do the things that she does with her voice and convey the song's emotions.

I love your reactions! Angelina is one of my faves the others being Dimash and Diana Ankudinova. Feels weird being in my mid 30's where most of my life I have favored 80's rock and my 3 favorite singers are from Norway Kazakhstan and Russia and none of them really do rock. I would suggest the next Angelina video be her cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins version of I Put A Spell On You, its phenomenal and she was 9 when it was recorded.

She used Sara Bareilles version of the song as a basis. Angelina add as always her own twist to it without overdoing anything. She has her own original song "Shield" and "A song for a", written for Angelina by the russian composer Nico Cartosio over a classic poem, but there are also so much more from her that will amaze you and show what she are capable to do. This was a great reaction.

No she did not. If you check them out side by side you will hear that where Sara sings with a high volum, Angelina just whisper and the opposite. So the arrangement is not the same, even if the both have taken the tempo down compared to the original.

The runs etc. you are talking about isn't what she normally does. What sets her apart are the delicate things like the long last fine note. That can be sang by many but not the way she does it.

Thanks for your reaction! She is only 17 years old today and from Norway. She signed with the label Republic Records just 14 years old, I think we can safely leave the promotion to Republic Record. Marketing will start when her full album is released later this year. There's only one EP with 6 songs she's released from RR now, and they haven't started marketing until the full album is released!. Republic Records know 100% what they are doing? I think a lot of people don't realize how much Angelina has done in her short life (17). FIFA song - She performed in front of 40 000 people only 11 years old invited by Norah Jones. She was also specially invited by Quincy Jones to perform on his 85th birthday in the O2 arena / London. And so on goes the list... She has over 250 songs on KZbin with cover songs and many originals. Angelina also plays piano and guitar. The truth is that within a year or two she will be the artist for the big occasions. and not a "bare belly plastic artist" who tops a list for a week and is forgotten just as quickly. She already eats most female vocalists for breakfast, and the label Republic Records and the rest of the music industry know that too! Angelina Jordan has nothing to prove. When she sometimes belts is it because the fits in the performances. She sings to us only she can!

What I hear in this performance by Angelina is a very thought provoking interpretation that blends the singing styles of three great singers, that suffered life long battles with addiction and depression: Amy Winehouse, Judy Garland, and Etta James. Taking that into consideration the words of the song have actually changed in their meaning changing the song into a dark and bluesy lament. Simply brilliant!. Take a listen to the song again with that meaning in mind and let us know what you think.

Hi Coach! I love your reaction and analysis!. I don't have any favorite female singer before until i discovered Angelina Jordan at this AGT competition. I love her style and tasteful melismas. She's such a great singer and story teller. Hope you'll react also to my favorite male singer Daryl Ong. Like Angelina, he's also a musical genious doing vocal acrobatics with his riffs and runs.please react to his cover of Thinking Outloud or his live at Wish Bus singing Don't Know What to Say. So excited to hear your intelligent commentaries. Many vocal coach reactors are admiring him and saying they are learning a lot from him. Well i guess, you'll like him too for sure. 🙂

First I dicovered Diana Ankudinova and Dimash Kudaibergen. Excellent singers, great talent. There souls are born on Broadway and in Las Vegas. Angelina Jordans soul was born in Chicago and New Orleans. This "jazzy" touch in her voice and her incredible abilty to make every cover her own song makes her unique.

seems very likely she has perfect pitch..what do you think? from her acapella start with the last agt performance to her rif ability like a player instead of a singer...a player who's studied those scales for a lifetime to know the pitch, not a 13 yr old child singing😲.... she doesn't ever struggle with landing the pitch right where she wants it. pretty clear it's just natural instinct she was born with, bc she's way too young to have had time to develop that ear... so cool!
