I then had a manager there try to tell me that I was not allowed a paid 15 minute break and I had to go to HR about it. I still didn’t quit there until I lined up a job at FedEx, who also will hire anyone with a pulse and was a much better job. I guess this is still weird for me. I always was expected to work and pay my debts and go to school and pay for my own stuff. At 22 I had completed my nursing degree, was working 50 hours a week as a nurse, and was living with my parents so I could pay off my car and student loans asap. Not having a job or paying bills or screwing around for years on end was never an option, no one was going to fund me just hanging out and chilling.

I wasn’t working because my parents wanted me to focus on doing the best I could in uni. I payed for my own expenses but lived completely rent free. It’s not a big deal. They are my parents and whilst I realise I am fortunate and grateful, again they are my parents! I’d do the same. 22 is still super young. The comments are going hard on her 🥴💕

I think that it's also important that, in time, you learn what you can handle and what you absolutely can't. I would absolutely crumble if I were tableside waitstaff or anything that chaotic, but I can function perfectly fine under a relatively structured but incredibly busy retail or food service situation, like working a bar or as a barista. I could never drive for delivery(I also don't drive, but even on scooters and the like), but I can give presentations and all sorts of public speaking. Some things you're just not built for. But you also can't let that stop you from constantly pushing to find what you _are_ built for so you can learn to fund your own life and build your own confidence.

Technically that's true, but culture and mental health also are big influences. A lot of guests know they are making bad decisions, but continue to do so because they have unresolved mental issues that make it difficult for them to make good decisions. That's why Caleb is such a big advocate for therapy; he can help with the math, but not the unresolved mental issues. My hot take on this one is to NOT sell the car and to pay it off like Caleb suggested after taking out the credit card debt. I'm not even going to lie, my husband is our families bread and butter. I stayed home for 7 years with our children (I did babysit during the day for cash) and I work at a school now, but I only bill 6 hours a day for 189 days of school year. I do work some late hours and summer school too. So my pay for the year is pretty low. But he is willing to do more so I can be on the same schedule as our children. May pay is for the fun. Vacations, kids sports, doing fun stuff as a family and any extra goes into investments. It's OK for one person to take on more if needed. What is not ok is for one person to leech off the other and make excuses to not work.
