@@geigertec5921yup, and it’s quite astonishing how many people don’t seem to understand that at simp to morally black and white arguments like “you should help those that you love!”. Great, so let’s do a hypothetical and say she’s giving just $300 a month to her family. And she’s on the hook for that for 20 years. And let’s say the inflation adjusted rate of return on a mutual fund that she’d like to buy shares of is 7%. Well, if she just invested that $300 every month, she’d have $147,583.77 after 20 years, adjusted for inflation. If she literally didn’t invest at all after that and kept the 7%, that would be $571,102.63 in another twenty years. But now all of that money isn’t there, because she had to spend her young adulthood, all the way into middle age, funding her own parents. so now she has to hit up her own kids to bridge the gap. And the cycle continues.

This is SO common in hispanic households. My grandparents put themselves in a financial hole and hoped that my aunts could pull them out of it. But my aunts lived in the states so there was no way they were going to sacrifice everything they fought for just to dig them out of a place they put themselves in. And the worst part about all of this is... she kind of acknowledges that her situation is messed beyond belief. Mom is capable of working, but lets her disabled husband call the shots on how she spends her time. Daughter is trying to provide the tools for Mom to become independent, but she won't use them. TX is a state that allows for spouses/parents to be paid to take care of disabled family members. Mom could be earning money that way if she wants to continue to be a SAH wife/mom. The 22yo and 16yo could be managing the house and Dad while Mom babysits her daughter's child. They live in the same building for crying out loud! Like Caleb told her: she could be making better money in a different field or simply a different company if she just got the childcare figured out, but it looks like she's surrounded by people who don't want to step up to the plate, but are happy to take what very little she has coming in.

As a first-generation daughter of immigrants I could relate a lot about my disabled parents and culture- I love my background and my parents even took care of their parents back in Latin America but it was affordable. You could get a caregiver for almost $200 USD a month. It’s crazy because my family thinks at the same culture and implementation of the kids taking care of their parents could be done in the US but the USA is so much different of a system than other countries. It’s not that I don’t care about my family it’s just almost impossible to create generational wealth if you don’t have retirement and you rely only on your kids. I don’t mean to assume this person’s background, but it just annoys me- Hispanic people being one of the largest minorities in the US, but we can’t create generational wealth because of cultural expectations of parents, friends, and family… anyways here to break them!

I went to my local county benefits office and they weren’t helpful like they can point me to the forms but I already know the forms I need help filling them out. I didn’t complete the forms in time as well (didn’t know there was a time limit to fill it out- I thought that didn’t start until you applied) anyways. I got a letter last year that I didn’t complete the form in time therefore it was automatically DENIED. I literally can’t just re apply is a whole longer process now that I can’t comprehend. I say this as someone who is prediabetic and lived with type 1 and type 2 diabetics for years. Pro tip: you don't even have to be obese to be prediabetic. It's not solely based on size/weight. Shows how important personal will and goals are and how success is in no small part a matter of self belief.

I know it is a sensitive subject, but I have never been been in worse financial situation than when I was extremely overweight. People don't realize how much quality of life a person loses from it. I felt A LOT more motivated to work extra or an extra job when I lost some weight and improved my health. Caleb, you arent mean. You are honest. Big difference. Of course sooo many ppl prefer a comforting lie over an uncomfortable truth- thats part of why they are where they are (financially). You respect them enough to be honest and genuine and sincere, something too many other people are not willing to offer them right now in their lives. A reality check is beyond priceless if they have the courage to listen. (I used to be a personal trainer and had to have some difficult conversations about people's habits, physical health, mental health, and even aspects of their lives that have nothing to do with food and exercise. It's tough, but when we approach these difficult conversations with genuine compassion, these people will hear it -usually.)

I agree with cutting off family who take advantage but from first hand knowledge I know that you can’t count on the government to help like we would like in caretaking situations. TX may be different but I’m in NY and my 80 year old mother had an accident that resulted in a TBI. I am an only child and was her caretaker. Medicare doesn’t cover any at home caretaking and they only cover 100 days in a skilled nursing facility. In order to qualify for Medicaid so she could get nursing care you have to deplete all your savings. I was lucky enough to be able to hire a lawyer to get her qualified for Medicaid in a month but people who try to apply on their own wait over a year and have to go through hoops. Even now with her on Medicaid and needing 24 hour care I can’t bring her home because Medicaid would only cover a few hours a week for a caregiver. And I can’t get paid to be her at home caregiver because I am her POA. I know this isn’t this woman’s situation but the thought that the government will step in and fill in the gaps is sadly not the case in this country.
