When I was VERY young, in elementary school (maybe 2nd or 3rd grade) I would sit in the library and listen to this record (1973). It was a favorite of mine. One of the tracks was this one, and I was almost obsessed with it. I listened to it over and over. It was the first time in my life that I can remember being truely scared, and it wasn't even a movie or video - it was just audio. It made me so scared that I was frozen in my chair. To this day, even just now, it gives me chills. I found it. Here it is. #theaterofthemind

The first narrator is Ralph Bell, a prominent actor in the "Golden Age of Radio". He and his wife, Pert Kelton (the first Alice Kramden on "The Honeymooners") were both blacklisted during the McCarthy witch hunt period. Ralph Bell's voice, intonation and delivery were instantly recognizable to audiences, though they may not have known the name. He was generally cast in crime stories as a sophisticated gangster, a crooked public official and the like.

If I'm not mistaken he was also the voice of Pepperidge farms. I have that tag line burnt into my cortex, Pepperidge farms remembers!!

I used to play this record all the time as a kid in the 70s. Something about the second story used to scare the bejesus out of me! 🤣

Loved this album as a kid in the 70s, although the first story was my least favorite. Now, as an adult, it's the best of the four. Also, this telling of "The Golden Arm" is the best ever recorded.

l remember this being a record lp my cousins and l played all the time staying overnight weekends at my grandparents house in the mid and late 1970's. Those were good old times and a good time to be a kid. l think l may still have this in a stack of old lp's with no covers. l am quite sure the quality is not good. Thanks for sharing. The Golden Arm bought back instant memories of nights in a dark room playing this story, how spooky!

@@nickolearcher3420 When you're talking about Home Safety Hotline, Boggarts are essentially a scarier version of Gremlins.

The first time I heard the story of The Golden Arm it was at Six Flags during their "Fright Nights" event in October of 1990 (now known as Fright Fest). Was it truly written by Mark Twain?
@calebjones4129

It's actually an old folk tale. It's become so ubiquitous that it's hard to tell where it originated but versions of it have been found that are 200 years old or more. It's theorized to be a cautionary tale designed to discourage grave robbing and encourage respect for the dead. Current variations seem to be more about greed though. Mark Twain told this particular version on a reading tour in 1884-1885 where he told ghost stories.

The narrator of the opening story sounds remarkably like William Daniels (Knight Rider, St. Elsewhere). Is it, by any chance?

No. Never mind. According to the jacket cover, the narration was performed by Ralph Bell.
