If you're looking to travel between London and any of the sleeper train destinations available, I hope you'll find this a useful video to research your trip! Tonight I'm travelling Edinburgh Waverley to London Euston and you're coming with me!
Right, let's talk about price, because it's a big part of the decision to use this service. I paid £150 for a Club Room for this journey. A Classic Room (without en suite) would have cost £130, so basically I paid £20 to have private toilet/shower facilities. There are also seats available (£70) and the double bed 'Caledonian Double' which was something crazy like £345! The prices are for the cabin, so if there are 2 of you travelling you can make a real saving, or like me, pay an absolute premium for single occupancy. Just so you know, there are no 'sharing with stranger' arrangements available on the Caledonian Sleeper anymore. To some this is a shame, but to me, I couldn't contemplate sharing such a small enclosed place with a stranger!!!
IMPORTANT: When you are booking online, keep checking the prices, don't just book what you see straight away. For the night I was booking, my price was varying wildly, sometimes well over £200. I think the website must 'hold' fares for a set time or something for people searching, because a refresh of the website and my fare was back down to £150 - so a single click saved me £70! The pricing structure can be really weird - sometimes I was finding the inferior Classic Room more expensive than the Club Room - surely this should never happen regardless of demand.
Personally, I would never book the traditional seats for this service. One, because I can never sleep properly in a regular seat. And two, because this train crawls along, adding up to 3 hours onto the normal time taken to travel between Edinburgh and London, so it really doesn't make sense to me (although might be good for a future video just as a challenge!)
I've added a bonus feature on this video. My channel is predominantly about Scotland, so the feature looks at Scottish places in London, just for a wee bit of fun while I was in the capital.
I hope you enjoy the video, please remember to subscribe if you haven't done so already, and be sure to ask me any sleeper questions in the comments below. Many thanks for watching!

My dad worked for British rail in the 70's on the sleeper train when i was a kid, he used to take me and my brother and sister and mum with him on the odd occasion and we'd get the sleeping cabins. I loved it on a train at night time. It was Glasgow to London and back again. I'd come back home with a big cardboard box full of little packs of biscuits with 3 biscuits in each pack and swapped them all with my mates for sweets n stuff....happy days.

How did I find myself here? Bedtime in North Carolina, watching a Steve Marsh video most evenings before turning the lights out, and relaxing with Steve’s video journeys and commentaries, before listening to the terrific music he picks at the end. Heck, I even find myself a bit anxious every video wondering if Steve will find something to eat, then enjoying his “food finds” for the trip. This is the best travel video series I’ve ever come across. Cheers, my friend!

There are two sleepers. The Highland Sleeper that comes from Fort William, Aberdeen and Inverness. That joins up at Edinburgh Waverley at about 1am The lowland sleeper goes from Edinburgh and Glasgow and joins at Carstairs...unless covid had changed this?🤔 The seated compartment is not good for an overnight journey and my biggest gripe is that it's very much sold as a luxury product which doesn't really provide an alternative to flying. I'd quite like the couchette system used on the continent and still preferred the old carriages.

@@steve-marsh Thanks for the reply.... I'm about to have a slight rant so please ignore.... Serco are currently running a service that has had many faults plus industrial action by it's employees. I believe that they are wishing to reduce the service to peak season and premium price only. Currently seats that should be available from Edinburgh/Glasgow are not, and I wouldn't be surprised if they use the excuse of "lack of use" as a reason to make cuts across the service. Rant over... Best wishes and hugs for you both 🤗

This train gets mixed reviews, but it's something that should be experienced if you can afford it. And yes, the price considers its value as a hotel room, but a hotel would allow you to get a full night's sleep! The Caledonian Sleeper occasionally suffers from maintenance issues, notably showers that are cold or inoperative as well as the temperature of the cabin, but the staff does what they can to keep you comfortable. And some people really appreciate having their own toilet!

Scotland's Ambassador has done it again. Great travel idea, for a casual traveler or tourist with amble time, the train is an option for sure. Sure the prices might be a little steep, but that's cool. The nacho's looked good (extra jalapeno's please). For myself and others who do not partake in rail travel, your sacrifice was appreciated, video'ing the room and other rail cars. Suppose there is a bit of excitement anyway and would be hard just to demand one's self to sleep. Closing with a pleasant audio selection. Thank you much!

Wonderful video, again bringing back memories of taking the Sleeper from Inverness down to Euston, which was a long trip for me after taking the regular train down from Thurso first. I rode of the older sleepers back then when they were pulled by those maroon colored EWS engines. The compartments only had one plug in those days and only for electrical shavers and not for charging phones. Thanks for the memories!!!!

Another absolutely splendid video, Steve. Helpfully informative about the sleeper train and fascinating walk around London, exploring the pubs of the nations! I remember the old sleepers, travelling from King's Cross to Aberdeen in the 1950s or early 1960s to see my grandmother, who lived at Glenkindie, near Strathdon. The modern sleepers look really clean and comfortable.

Cheers Barney! Still got a soft spot for the old sleeper, but the new one is pretty good as well :) Cannae beat the sound of the tracks as you fall asleep!

Memories of a 4 seater overnight in the tattie holidays with mums mound of tupperware sandwiches to clear the fridge before going, a change up to Norwich then wee local trains to get to the boat on the broads for 2 weeks then repeat

I have used this sleeper quite a few times. But I used to travel from Thurso down to Inverness and catch the sleeper to London there. When I travelled the trains used to sound like this: diddlidee-diddlida-diddlidee-diddlida-diddlidum-diddlidoodle-diddlidee etc. etc. anyone remember that?
