Beautiful example of physical motion creating charge separation. 👌 The movement of the plate away from the Styrofoam multiplies the voltage each time. This physical motion increasing charge separation voltage is the principle behind the van Der Graf generator.

what I dont get is why the process is repeatable ? is the voltage that high on the styrofoam? Doesnt it leak?

Glass, paper, plastic ,wood can all be used for all non metal parts of the experiment and will work well.

Mercury much worse than lead. Florescent bulbs a use Mercury to create the plasma inside that excites the phosforessent powder coating in the tubes which is also bad to breath or get into a cut should you cut yourself on a broken bulb.

Electric charge does not vo into anything it hangs out on the surface. It's called the skin effect. The power lins that deliver your electric atr not pipes electricity is not like water. It hangs out on the outside of the wires. Thats why they are called transmission lines.they are antennas, not pipes electric is not in them it is on them hovering over the surface of the wires.
