I feel farmers and ranchers are some of the hardest working and most resourceful people in our world. I base a lot of this on things my Mother told me about her youth. She was born on a Central Texas cotton farm in 1919, growing up as a teenager in the Great Depression. One thing she mention to me in just a passing comment was “if we didn’t grow it, we didn’t eat it”. Was just a fact of life statement to her but said volumes to me of the hard like farming and ranching was then and to a certain extent still is today.

I'm from New England, where it's almost 60 today and the winters long deep freeze is over I hope and I'm curious, you had another video I watched where you were calving in deep snow years ago is there a reason why you don't breed your cows one month later, like I said I'm curious? I'm kinda a hillbilly and way back, when I was a kid I work for many farmers throwing hay and harvesting crops before I went to work in the trades and always wished that I had been a farmer. I like your show and your farm, good luck with calving. God bless all farmers and ranchers

Mike, I know every place is different. But I urge you to check into Kit Pharo and some of his ranching philosophies. Specifically calving ease and calving in sync with nature. Once you calve on green grass you will never go back. I appreciate all that you do for the ranching community. You present the lifestyle very well.

Mike, when you found calf #6 yesterday my first thought was white muscle because we have had that issue on our farm in the past. White muscle usually hits newborn calve from 12 to 36 hours after birth and they go down very fast and it is very difficult to bring them back. Some of the symptoms are the calf can't get up, rapid shallow breathing, very week heathbeat and inability to control it's tongue to suck. Because white muscle affects the muscles it affects the heart, diapham, tongue which are all muscles. As a precautionary measure we give all our newborn calves a 2 ml injection of SELON E as soon as they are born as recommended by our veterinarian. Since we have started this practice we have not lost a calf to white muscle in 4 years. SELON E is a selenium and vitamin E supplement and is manufactured by Vetoquinol. Hope this helps and good luck. Orchard Hill Farm, Massey, Ontario, Canada
@brianjonker510
@brianjonker510 4 жыл бұрын
It is standard practice in the Eastern USA albeit 6 weeks before calving. Not so in the Western USA. Out where it is dryer the selenium levels in the soil are high sometimes very high and a supplemental shot or selenium in the lick tub can be toxic.

We had 2 sets of twins this season. Lost both of the 1st set. The second set, momma kicked the smallest one off. She is in the back yard being a bottle baby. So far, no free-martin. You are spot on about Angus not making enough milk. What has worked for us is to put a Gelbvieh bull on our Angus and develop a Balancer herd. They are great milk producers and so far 100% have scored choice+ on the rail. You are a tough son of a gun! It was 38 here last night for a low and that was too cold!

Never been to WY. One can see for miles, beautiful! The sky looks so large as does the horizon. How large is your ranch? Don’t know how you do all this by yourself. I live in ETX, we have ranches in the state, but not this large. Am enjoying seeing and learning about ranch life!

Sorry to hear about #6. I have been checking Facebook. Did the family make it in to the air B&B ok with the with all the snow. They don’t see a lot of that white stuff in the south.
