Morgan, from what I understand do NOT give it a couple of days. Calf’s can die if they don’t get that first milking. But you probably already know how he’s doing since these videos are usually old. But when a calf is first born there’s colostrum in the mama’s milk that he needs NOW. From what I read within the first 24 hours after birth.

That's great on your first calf! It never fails that if it's snowing or super cold and the barometric pressure changes your gonna have a calf born. One winter we had calves dropping like crazy and actually brought 2 calves in my basement to stay at night and taken out in the morning. My hubby had to help clean them up cause it was freezing on the calves faster then momma could do. One even had frost bit ears cause of the bad weather. Watch for pneumonia. Make sure you have some milk replacer and bottles on hand. We have Angus and Hereford cattle and sometimes put vest on the Calves if they need it. Just watch the others don't try to hurt him. Good luck!

@MCugs
@MCugs 2 жыл бұрын
The calf is better outside with fresh air than in the barn. They're lower to the ground and more sensitive, and that's how they get respiratory problems and develop pneumonia. Also for your next calves, watch them to make sure they're nursing within 24 hours and getting enough colostrum. Also start considering milking out colostrum and freezing it.
@dairyfarmer726

How is he going to milk her if she has never let him handle her, let alone touch her teats? He also has no milking stand and I'm guessing that he has never milked any farm animal before. All that we have seen him do in his videos is lead them (more or less) by giving them Alfalfa cubes, refill their manger with hay bales and refill their water; nothing else. I'm not trying to be negative, but when it comes to his cattle and their care, I really think Morgan is in way over his head. He strength is with raising birds.

You can tell an animal feels safe in it's environment when it just pops out a baby without causing an actual ruckus. They certainly like it on the farm and are alright with Morgan and the dogs. Also very good in listening to your mentor. People forget how instinctual motherhood is to a LOT of animals, especially cows. She did the birth just fine by herself, so she'll know what to do. Plus, she'd probably be a better guard dog than Toby right now 😂😂 I used to hang at a family members farm, where the 80 acres that was closed in for the long horned cattle. Those mom's could and would downright want to kill you if you got too close to a newborn.

As the new calf's mother is Anne of Green Gables, maybe it should be named after one of her children. She had 6 children in the book Rainbow Valley, so plenty of scope for the imagination! I like Jem or Walter if it's a boy, or maybe Diana or Rilla if it's a girl.

I love seeing these videos. And I'm kind of laughing at your comments of feeling that you should be doing something because that was exactly my thoughts but you're right in saying that you're doing what you should be and allowing for the animals to take care of things as they need to. Love it

I follow another farm located in VT (Wing and a Prayer) and the shepherdess always using the first letter of the mom for all of the offspring. So Penolope gives birth to: Petunia or Paisley or Peter. This way you can keep track of lineage too. I love this system because it garners really creative names.

If you didn't notice all of the 1st gen heifers have names starting with "A"; Anabelle, Anna Green Gables, Ariel, so this wouldn't work in this instance. But it has been mentioned that the 2nd gen heifers will have names starting with "B", 3rd with "C" and so on and so forth.

Hey Morgon, any interest in having a helper at the barn for any big projects? I’m a college student from VT and have grown up on farms more than willing to help out

Send him an email through the farm website! I suspect he's more likely to see it that way, and he would have a better way to reply.

I'd make a video showcasing your skills and how you'd be able to help him. Cmon guy, this is the era of technology and you think he's going to see your comment and if he does, do you think he's going to say, "yea sure! You got the job and you start on Monday." Put your best foot forward, make that video and show him you're serious, show him what you've done on a farm and what you're capable of. Best of luck to you.

really nice of you :) i believe he tries to limit access to his farm to his close friends and family, hence why he always calls people he already knows for big projects but i guess if he needs the help he'll make it clear. But some farmers in your state you might need the help too so you can ask around your area just in case ^^

Whoohoo baby highlands at Gold Shaw Farm 🥰 I too hope he is getting milk especially with the cold. You could put a hanging heat lamp, with the power cord high out of reach stapled to the beam, or however you can. Or could encourage her to eat inside with the help of some snacks lol.

But remember that Anne of Green Gables is a First Time Mom and may need some second guessing as to care of the baby.
