In order to exhaust heat / hot air to the outside, the one hose unit must draw air from the inside of the room; and in doing so, additional air is drawn in from outside of the room. Unlike a central AC or window unit that draws air from outside to cool the condensing coils, these units are entirely inside the dwelling. Still they work pretty well. I have one and have used it in my bedroom when my central unit has gone on strike.

After watching your instructions, I am thinking I should position my dehumidifier towards the window. Maybe even I might make a right angle to direct that hot air out during hot season. Do these ever need to be recharged? Mine is a year old and all of a sudden is not cooling after a couple hot days. I've cleaned my filters and condenser. Outside of the Compressor is pretty hot to the touch, though the unit has been off for a couple hours.

Could be a clogged drain line, low refrigerant. Dirty air filters can also cause the evaporator coils to freeze up and thaw later causing excess water to flow into the pan.

@@CPCXJT you should only run the dehumidifier during the most humid part of the day..... and you don't run both at the same time... I run my dehumidifier for about 3 hours in the morning.... and then I switch on the AC..... you can also purchase a cold mist humidifier....

Great video. If the compressor turns on for a couple minutes and then shuts off but the fan keeps working. What do you think might be the problem. The units momentarily resets, compressor shuts off and unit keeps blowing air just not cold air. I can get the compressor to come back on by hitting the cool button or tuning the unit off and on.

Check your filters, if dirty this can overwork the compressor and cause it to shut down because of lack of airflow. Check the exhaust hose for any blockages as well.

May need to check for exhaust leaks, as well as freon leaks. Also, the evaporator coil may need defrosting. You can call an hvac specialist in your area.

Great informative video! I really appreciate To The Point videos!!! We use multiple portable a/c’s in our TX apt to assist the ancient central a/c unit…since the portable allow the central a/c to run less…it has lowered our electricity bill a great deal!!! I understand some portable a/c’s need draining and others are bucket-less or self evaporating. As well as some are in between & partially self evaporate as it uses the liquid to cool the mechanism. I’m looking for a video that shows a comparison of these 3 types & what it looks like internally!!?!?

I have one of these, as well as central AC. I use it in one room that doesn't get as cool as the rest of the house. One day when the portable AC was NOT running I went outside and put my hand at the outlet where warm air comes out when it's cooling; I found that cold air was coming out. So it seems that it's basically like leaving a small round window open while it's not running. Am I right?

Leaking could be from- -Clogged drain, hose take a screw driver to unclog it -Drip pan could be full, empty it -Loose drain plug, tighten it -Dirty filter, clean it by running water over it and scrubbing it with a brush and soap. -Faulty pump, bring it to the pros The smell could be from mold build up in it. Get it checked immediately. Yes you can use the spray.

I'm a heavy equipment technician certified with HVAC so forgive me in the case home air conditioning units work differently, but in school I was taught that the hot pressurized gas is cooled in the condensor after leaving the compressor, and the thermal expansion valve isn't used to cool the refrigerant but is used to create a pressure drop which in turn causes the refrigerant to change states from a gas to a liquid, and now once it's in a liquid form, it can absorb heat from the evaporator which is inside the cab (or the hotter room air for household situations such as these) to remove heat from the cab of the vehicle, so refrigerant moreso removes heat from a room rather than adding cool air, however, the refrigerant doesn't simply only remove heat as some cooling effects are created due to the fact that after the pressure drop turning the refrigerant back into a liquid at the thermal expansion valve, and due to the heat inside the cab where the evaporator is located, the refrigerant actually begins to boil which not only allows for more heat removal from the surrounding air but because the referigant is a special liquid that boils with only a very slight pressure drop, and since it's been cooled through the condsensor, this boiling liquid is not hot but is rather cold and gives off a "cold steam" that provides the opposite effect of putting your head over a boiling pot of water and becoming hot - refrigerant both removes heat and produces cooling vapor

If it’s not the compressor, try plugging it into a single outlet circuit. Also make sure you have it plugged directly into the wall outlet, no extension cord. Make sure the filters and coils are clean.

No, they are sealed systems designed to last the life of the unit. Unless, there is a leak, at which point you would need to take it to the pros to fix.

Make sure your vents are not blocked. This can cause the condenser coils to get too hot and heat up the room. Dirty evaporator coils, leaking refrigerant and a faulty thermostat can cause it as well

It’s normal. It’s the drain pan, where the excess moisture drains into. You have to empty it periodically.

Thank you for your video. I currently have an issue with my AC and can't seem to find anyone with a similar issue. Basically, when I turn it on, it blows out cold air like normal, but overtime it blows out less and less air. After a couple minutes I only have this very small "breeze" of cool air coming out, which is definitely not strong enough to cool down my room. This started happening out of nowhere and I have no idea how to fix it. I drained the water out, cleaned my filters and the issue is still persisting. Note that this happens even though the room temp my AC is reading is not at the desired temp I told my AC to cool down my room to. If you have any idea how I can fix this, I would love your help. Could be a refrigerant leak, in which case you have to find the leak by spraying soapy water on the lines to see where it’s bubbling up. If it’s minor you can patch it with Super glue. If it’s multiple holes you may have to replace the lines. Could also be the compressor, in which case you have to replace or repair that.

Everything works except it will not blow any air out of the exhaust at all. I first began having trouble with it when it started needing the water drained every two hours or less. That’s where the first problem started, but then it just stopped blowing any air out of the exhaust. It won’t blow hot or cold air, just nothing. Do you by chance have any ideas what that could be? It is a Sunpentown portable air conditioner - the kind where the unit is inside the house and is vented with a large hose from the unit to a window. I hope that makes sense. It is not one of those air conditioners that cools the whole house, just one room.

Yes, it could be a window, a cold air return duct or even a wall, which you would have to cut a hole in the wall for that but it’s an option. Either way in the heating process it’s cold air that is being expelled vs the cooling process in which heat is being expelled.

I was trying to convert one of these to dual hose. I thought the small vent on the side was used for cooling the "hot side" (I guess that's called the condenser?) but upon watching this it looks like both vents end up connected together, meaning the conversion would not be possible. Yes single hose units expel hot air but in doing so they create a negative pressure in the room which attracts hot air from other rooms. The 2 hose system uses one hose to expel hot air and the other sucks in outside air and cools it for the room so no negative pressure is created because the air is constantly being replaced and cooled. The 2 house system is more expensive.

Check exhaust hose for leaks or blockages, if hot air can’t get out, the ac can’t cool the room.

Excellent. My only constructive criticism is if needing to clean the coil fins, the utmost of care must be used while using a vacuum as not to damage or crush them. I'd use a soft paint brush and vacuum, never touching the fins with the vacuum head. Crushing them will greatly impeded heat transfer and as well as the efficiency/performance of the unit. Could be a dirty filter. Make sure there are no kinks in the exhaust hose. Coils may be dirty or clogged. Refrigerant leaks can cause overheating as well

The room air is being recycled and passes over the cold evaporator coils back into the room as cooler air while the condenser coils expel the heat extracted from the air to the outside.

There is a good amount of copper, for example the tubing for the refrigerant and the motor winding. However you can’t scrap the refrigerant, you need an expert for that because of EPA requirements. So that cost may or may not make scrapping worth it if your trying to make money of it.

Why is mine dumping water right in the fan motor? My evaporator radiator looking part is covered in water as well. Not just the copper pipes of it. So much it blows water out on us. I would assume it would blow the water out the exhaust but it doesn’t.

Clogged drain pipe is the most common reason for this. Remove the drain pan, look for the small drain hole and use toothbrush, or toothpick to clear any dirt or debris from the hole.

@@Caliber8Tools thanks. It’s the same unit as you did in your video. So sadly not drain pan to take off. I tore it apart. Poured water on the top drain pan n water went out the pan. Into the clear tube that goes out right side to upfront n drops it right in the blower motor housing. To see why, looks like I’ll have to take the control panel off and look down in blower housing and see why it’s dropping it there.

It doesn’t suck heat, as the air runs over the coils filled with refrigerant the air becomes cool. So it makes warm air cooler.

I'm using the same model, but it blows some of its warm air together with cool air. I have been cleaning its filters regularly. I don't know what is wrong with it. Also, its body feels warm/hot to the touch when using it.

May need maintenance. Parts may be overheating. Do not use it as there may be an electrical issue that can cause a fire.

There is a reservoir that collects the moisture and drains it to the pan.
