I got the same PH meter and never did get it properly calibrated. This was just excellent. I read the directions several times and never got the message that you showed and explained so well in this video. Thank you most sincerely. I think the company owes you a free meter for doing such an excellent job explaining how to calibrate. The meter is useless if not properly calibrated and their instructions were really lacking. Thank you again. And I waited patiently for this carrot recipe and am so anxious to do it. You are batting a 1000 with me.

I have had this same PH meter for around 6 months now and have followed the calibration instructions exactly but the instructions don't say to hold the cal button an extra time in the 2nd test or a second time in the 3rd test like you showed. The volume of water needs to be EXACT or the PH will off. Weigh the water to exactly 250 grams added. The temp is important too but just needs to be close enough, it only barely affects PH while water volume affects PH a lot. Also leave the meter in each cup for 30 seconds BEFORE holding for 5 seconds. The meter takes time to read PH. EDIT: also u probably dont have to calibrate it at all, when new it will probably be accurate to roughly 0.1 PH which is close enough for most purposes. Keep probe from drying out by soaking it in distilled water for hours if needed. And always rinse in distilled water before and especially after use. This video was fantastic compared to the other ones i saw which were blatantly wrong about almost everything they said. This one was almost entirely correct, with just a few added steps i posted above.

Hello Adrienne and thank you for all the informative video, specifically the ones relating to fermentation. I just received my PH meter and watched your calibration video. You calibrate with three packets, my meter, which is the same as yours only came with the ph 6.86 @ 25 and the 4.01 @ 25. Instructions are also only for the 2. Any idea why? Did you get the extra packets from Amazon? By the way I am in Canada 🇨🇦. Have a great weekend.
@CleanFoodLiving Жыл бұрын
Mine came with 3 so I didn't need to order any. My thought is this - the most important calibration range is the 6.86 and 4.01 .... because in fermentation, you'll probably never see a 9+ PH reading anyway, but you will see the lower range. Point being, I think you'll be just fine with only the two.👍

@judithgoldberg845310 ай бұрын
I still have some questions. Does the water have to be 25°C to MIX the powder and/or to do the calibration? It does drop in temp as you stir the powder in, so could/should you microwave it to bring it back up to 25°C? Then, since temp appears to be a factor, should anything you're testing with the meter, once it's calibrated, also be a certain temp/25°C? If you save and store the testing waters, should you bring them back to 25°C before recalibrating?
@CleanFoodLiving10 ай бұрын
A degree difference doesn't really matter. I have found if the medium being tested is really cold, like from the fridge, the ph is a little off. for best accuracy, allow it to come to room temp before testing. Always testing at 25C is not mandatory, just avoid extreme hot and extreme cold.
@judithgoldberg845310 ай бұрын
@@CleanFoodLiving Thanks. But is the temp important for the packet mixing and/or the reading?

Thanks for this video : still one fully detailed and beautifully crafted ! I have purchased one of those meters, clearly made by the same manufacturer, its color being green. I've had some problems with the calibration process. I used the 6.86 dose with filtered and not distilled water. Then I used the right water with the 9.18 ph dose, but it has been impossible to dissolve after 20+ minutes of turning it around. I have finished the calibration process with the 4.01 ph dose, and some measures after this seem consistent, particularly distilled water at around 7 ph. The instructions notice says : "use the 6.86-solution (or the 4.01 and 9.18)", which I understand as that you can calibrate the meter with only one solution. Now, this extra solutions seem to be unavailable at Amazon. What to do? Thanks for your suggestions !

Here's some in-stock extras: www.amazon.com/dp/B09DCP4HNH/?tag=cleanfoodli0f-20 . I calibrate to all 3. If you instructions say only one, then it's not exactly the same as the one I use, but will get the job done. Sometimes all those grains don't fully dissolve. I've had that happen to me to, but move forward with the process. It will be ok!👍😊

My sodium intake is my only nutrient that is outside of the recommendations. If I were to cut out or down on fermented foods of various kinds (my main source of sodium) I would get to the limit of 2.3g of sodium per day. But I don't want to do that. Hi! You're my favorite resource for lacto-fermentation. Love your videos and I love that you take the time to answer questions. It's my second attempt. I have one jar that had a regular cover and on day 6 (yesterday), I found there was some kham yeast with a few speckles of mold. I removed both with a clean spoon (it was easy, the speckles of mold were not touching the sides) and wiped off the inside with a paper towel as shown. I left the weight in because I didn't have the time to measure the ph nor do a brine flush and wanted to take the ph before flushing to make sure it's worth keeping the pickles. My question is, if we can't clean the ph meter with soapy water, how do we clean it between use to avoid introducing bad bacteria in the next jar we are testing? Thank you.
@CleanFoodLiving Жыл бұрын
So long as the water rinse does a thorough job, it's ok. I've never had a problem with contamination with thorough rinsing. PS: just want to make sure about this... never brine flush mid-fermentation. If you choose to do so, always do it at the very end, just before placing in the refrigerator. Good job with the quick swipe for mold removal... no need to remove the weight or PH check every time👍😊

@@CleanFoodLiving Thank you. It's the 8th day today so, should be finished. I don't have that many weights so, I will remove it, take the ph and if 4.5 or below, I will do a little brine flush and put it in the fridge if above, it will go in the compost pile. I will take this opportunity to check the ones with the Easy Fermenter covers and if all good, I will switch for a regular cover and they will go in the fridge. Great video! Thanks! I have the same meter (also yellow with the very same buffer bags) but something seems to be wrong with it since it is not sensitive to the fast button pushes to set up the calibration level for the next liquid. It just "tries" to assume what is the pH of the solution and only gets the 9.18 right... The 4.01 is assumed as being the 6.86. The 6.86 suggests a calibration of 9.18 again. Those 3 points in the calibration curve make the reading completely wrong. I am trying to figure out if this is some sort of new hardware version that "guesses" the calibration pH without allowing the user to set it up manually. Maybe they wanted to simplify the process that way, which in my case, generated the opposite effect.
