The camera was installed by a local nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley. They hired a biological tree-climber to install the camera. Someone who not only understands how to climb trees, but can also install cameras and microphones without damaging the tree or any of its habitats. These climbers use gear with ropes and pulleys known as climbing hand ascenders and arm strength to pull themselves up the 150 ft tree. They do not use their feet against the tree to climb (no spikes). They must also have both the federal and state permits required to handle bald eagles as a federally protected and state endangered species. The camera system was designed and installed by Dr. Peter Sharpe in 2015. Big Bear Eagle History: www.friendsofbigbearvalley.org/eagles/eagle-history/

While I have never been to Big Bear, I *have* hiked in the hills of Napa. I vividly recall hiking up into an area where California Turkey Vultures nested (in the winter and spring) and being amazed at the sheer size and beauty of these magnificent birds. Eagles have the same beauty and majesty. Since gathering their feathers is against the law, I never touched the fallen feathers of the vultures, only to gaze in amazement at the sheer SIZE of them! Yes, I was so VERY tempted! But I know better! Also, when I was in the area was in August, far past the breeding/laying/raising seasons of the birds. I can only imagine the beauty of the area these two are in! Thank you USFS and FOBBV for your care and dedication to these wonderful eagles!
@geslinam970310 ай бұрын
I have never understood why gathering feathers is illegal. We used to have a huge turkey buzzard flock living in our neighborhood, there were always feathers around. I loved when the buzzards came to my yard, mostly looking to eat the cat food we put out for the ferals. I’ve also seen them play with balls left in the yard by the kids. Don’t know why they get so much hate, I like buzzards.
@sylvisterling878210 ай бұрын
I also love TVs. :) The reason gathering their feathers, or any feathers of endangered birds, or parts of animals that are endangered is because if one person sees another w9ith something like an eagle feather, or wolf tooth or bear claw, they might want one as well. THAT creates a "market" and the unscrupulous folks WILL break laws to obtain and sell feathers, paws, claws, hides, horns, teeth, scales etc. Lok at what has happened to the elephant and rhino populations! EVEN something so harmless as gathering up fallen feathers still creates a demand for them. Better not to do it at all.
