Shadow is a great dad teaching Spirit to protect her food. In the wild, over the next year, she wont get to leisurely eat her prey on a nest. SHe has to steal or eat carrion.Hungry eagles will be ready to steal her food...or she will have to steal it from them to eat until she masters her hunting and flying skills. Good job Shadow!

Spirit is certainly developing her flying skills and tactics to get what she wants and she couldn't have a better mentor or Pa than Shadow! And I was so glad to see Shadow come over to see if he could grab a morsel of the fish. This tells Spirit there is more than one eagle who is a bit peckish and she's not the only eagle in Big Bear Valley. Thank you lovely Cali x

Seriously around what time frame is it before Spirit goes off on her own out of the area? Asking for not just myself, but all the wildlife that resides locally there. They will literally celebrate the day she takes off. Quick question to those who have watched since they had Simba, did he make this much racket when growing up and learning the ropes etc? Speaking of stealing...witnessed a juvenile osprey steal a fish from a baby Osprey on a nest and almost killed the baby Osprey forced it to fledge early. Very hard to watch. This is in SWFL

they are teaching her . For the first year a juvenile bald eagle will scavenge and steal . She has to learn how to steal and how to protect whatever she has stolen or scavenged . What is going on here is normal . Jackie and Shadow are getting the food they need , trust me .

I can tell for sure that if Shadow is hungry, he eats his hunt when he needs, and when he feels like sharing or has the instinct to share, he delivers to the nest (though usually not before he takes the head of his prey for his own snacking purposes first). I'm confident they get their fill just fine because they can hunt for themselves just fine and eat away from the nest. The left over prey are for lessons for the newer-to-this-world Spirit!
