I drive through Santa Paula occasionally, which made this all the more delightful. Loved seeing regular folk on errands, and the high school students at the end.

This film was most likely taken before the March 12, 1928 collapse of the St. Francis Dam northwest of the city, which sent a wave of water that devastated much of the town.

There are any number of 1928/9 Model A Fords in the film. Look closely.... So it was after that. 3:05 theres a model A Sedan Delivery..... says a lot trying to date this.... look again at 0:27 a Model A cabriolet there parked on the right..... Lots of clues here.... This part of town shows no flood damage.......
@costernocht6 ай бұрын
Good call! From Wikipedia: "The town was first hit by the waters at approximately 3:00 a.m. Though hundreds of homes and structures were destroyed, the loss of life would have been greater if it were not for two motorcycle police officers that noisily warned as many people as possible. A sculpture called "The Watchers" in downtown Santa Paula depicts this act of heroism."
@historybuff03936 ай бұрын
@@caroltenge5147 My hunch is that it was taken before. I have seen film in the aftermath of the flood, and even in areas of the city that were relatively undamaged there were refugee centers, Red Cross centers, and makeshift soup kitchens for the dispossessed. Life in this film seems too orderly and normal to be after a major disaster that killed hundreds of residents.

Notice the full-service station gravity flow gas "pumps" at 5:17. They functioned where the attendant pumped by hand the gasoline into the visible, round, glass tank (above the pump handle) to the requested gallons listed inside the tank and then he let it flow by gravity into the customer's car.

Just my observation starting from at around 7:00 People move slow. They take their sweet time doing stuff, not in a hurry not “on a mission”, just chill. Just take a look at how they walk and interact w/ each other. Very calm, almost hazed? They stand close to each other “invading personal space”… lots of touching, taping on shoulders etc. thanks for sharing!

Nice work! Always like to see parts of old Santa Paula. However, I could do without the added sound but that is just a personal decision. We can all set it where we want it. I believe the school is "Isbell" with just one e. The school opened in about 1926. Hence, it was still pretty new when the St. Francis Dam broke and flood waters reached the first floor windows, entered the school and filled the basement. It was a tragic time up and down the valley for all concerned. Thanks for your work on this old piece of film.

A lot of the shots are clearly planned and choreographed, and seem to focus on clothing, including work uniforms, of people coming out of shops, schools, workplaces. I'm puzzled as to the original purpose of these clips---someone just filming for documentary purposes or maybe a Chamber of Commerce-type promotional for the town? Given the almost unnaturally pristine look of much of the clothing, you'd almost think it was promo for a clothing store, laundry, or dry-cleaning business!
@tobystamps29206 ай бұрын
People at that time dressed up even for what we would think of as casual activities. What you see would have been the norm for people going around town and at school at that time. Dressing casual as we do today didn’t begin till around the 60s-70s.
