My grandpa and his sister went to Texas from Alabama to pick cotton during The Great Depression. I believe they thought that there would be more need for workers since there were so many large farms that needed people to pick it. They were sharecroppers back then. One of my great aunts was married to a Maples guy from California and she moved out there and that is what she did was pick cotton. I've always wondered what part of CA she lived in. It was somewhere not far from LA. She eventually came home because she said she got shaken out of bed a few times when they had small tremors lol. I have never picked it but older family members said it was rough. Hands would bleed. I am surprised that California is 2nd in the cotton industry.

Cotton farming is the cause of drought in California. It is water intensive and drained all of our lakes and underground water. Arizona is allowing alfalfa farming by the Saudis, and that is draining their water supply.

Cotton is not a good crop for California. Really nice to see generational farming like that though. Being row crops, I imagine drip irrigation is not used as a means of watering and fertilization. It seems drip irrigation is the way forward in California and appropriate crop selection.
