@@hartz3176 I’m from a very very earthquake prone 3rd world country and at least in big cities basically everywhere is safe up until 7.5 ish unless you have a bunch of windows at an arms distance. Buildings are just made with earthquakes in mind so there’s not really any need to do anything, in places where earthquakes happen so often safety doesn’t change much regardless of where you are, at least while its happening, afterwards you may wanna go to safety zones if you live in a bay area due to tsunamis.

yeah, theres a difference between a big one and small one and youll know within a couple of seconds if it is one to take cover for. taking cover for every earthquake, especially in areas prone to them (west coast of US) would be like calling 911 for every injury you sustain. minor cuts, a bruise, a dust particle in your eye. i mean, sure, take cover for your piece of mind, if you want, but most people just ride it out.

I went through many earthquakes and people who say they KNOW are the same people who will drive on the red light and be surprised when they hit a person, coz surprise surprise you aint special...if a professional who studies this shit for life tells you to cover, you cover...the fact you survived 100 doesnt mean you will survive the 101st. But nah everyone thinks they are big brain ...like if you just find your life not valuable enough to bother to cover, say it - it is fine....but dont act like you know better then earthquake professionals who say to cover coz that is CAP.

I lived in japan for years and I understand the panic during the first time you experienced earthquake. But you gotta understand, after 6 earthquake in a year, you just don't care anymore unless if it's actually strong. Earthquake in japan starts from scary to actually just annoying you with no real danger. Since it's japan, most infrastructures there are built to withstand "normal" quakes but I highly advice to do safety procedures especially if you're outside japan

Honestly, how they reacted to the Earthquake is how i react to tornadoes sometimes. There was a ton that happened near me this summer, but none of them were strong enough to cause too much damage. Maybe a couple fallen trees? My picnic table almost flew over the fence once. All these tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down. I've been used to Tornado watches, warnings and actual tornadoes that have been close to me a lot. Most of them in my personal experience weren't super strong and they almost always either happened in the summer or winter. Mainly spring.....living in the midwest is fun💀

california has for local residents. we are taught in school what to do and we do practice drills. there are ads and trainings that talk about this pretty often. it’s mostly transplants that are unaware of what to do

I grew up in California, and we were taught from a young age what to do when an earthquake hits. Immediately tells me that these guys are not from areas prone to quakes. Also, I have literally slept through "small" quakes. That non-locals have freaked out over. You get used to them after a while. If a native Californian is telling you to duck and cover, you better believe it's a decent quake.

Honestly same where I'm from. In NZ people exaggerate how many quakes we get but really we get like 10 average ones per year and a major one maybe every 5 years or so. Only thing we have to worry about is a tsunami after a quake. If I'm sleeping and there's a quake, I pretty much just open my eyes a smidge and then go back to sleep.

As a lifelong CA resident, unless stuff starts falling from shelves/walls or the quake continues beyond 10 secs, we don’t really react and just wait it out. When it’s actually kinda big, you can HEAR the difference (as if a semi or a dumpster is wheeling towards you). The 2019 Ridgecrest quakes were the only ones where I genuinely got spooked and rushed under the door frame bc it went on for like 20 secs and sounded like thunder. Definitely also contemplated running outside to the parking lot 😅
