My daughter went to Cali from Maine to see her fiancé last spring. She couldn't believe the filth and stench. When her fiance visits Maine there is complete astonishment at the lifestyle. Everything clean, everyone friendly and helpful, service staff actually served you. No need to lock our cars or houses in some places. Her fiance is a cast member at Disney after 10 years will qualify for cut rate Disney vacations for life. My daughter just returned to Cali for one more vacation before they pull the trigger and her fiance moves to Maine. She was travelling to CA and I know she is a grown woman but she's very sheltered about the things the world can do to people. She said everything was SO much worse than they were last spring. Every place they had hit before (in and out burger) and other iconic restaurants or landmark stores closed. She said it looked like the apocalypse and smelled like feces and death. I am SO grateful her fiance is coming here instead of living in Cali. My daughter was stupefied by how much everything in Cali cost, way up even since she'd been there last spring. It's a shame such a treasure is dying.

Val respected the fact that we are Christians and there were no inappropriate PDA's and no sex, Val bunked with my husband and I bunked with my daughter. I just did Jury Duty in Sacramento and the overall impression I got was: people are fucking SICK of the shit here. The case was attempted vehicle theft and in short, the guys excuse was he thought the vehicle was abandoned and that he could just take it. We were presented CalCrim 3411 as jury instruction, which basically says "If someone made a mistake about the law you have to let them go", which is absolutely ludicrous, and 1 of the 12 jurors just couldn't think her way around that. After 2 hung verdicts they had the lawyers do a bit more arguing for us and the defense attorney said "that's not our defense" so the woman finally relented, but this guy almost got away with it by saying "Whoops!" The biggest crime was wasting 6 days of my time where I needed to be working, and instead got paid $15 a day.

There's a key point you glossed over here, Matt... unusually so. Prop 36 will only apply to people with prior convictions for theft and/or drugs - which you noted - but what you missed was that these people are the exception rather than the rule. If prosecutors aren't bringing charges to establish the prior convictions, Prop 36 won't apply to anyone... rendering Prop 36 largely a symbolic gesture, not meaningful legislation.

You should never have to tell the people who or what you voted for… unless you literally work as a representative of the people. Such a person should obviously divulge where they stand on any controversial issue, especially when that issue is literally up for public vote.

From what I read, severity of punishment is a smaller factor than potential criminal's belief in their likelihood to get caught, as long as the consequences are at least bad for them. "No penalty" like California is untenable (makes catching them irrelevant), but it seems like 10 years vs 30 as penalty has similar rates of disincentive, and you need to catch them more reliably instead. On that note, changing police incentives needs to happen too. They need to fight this actual kind of crime, and not commit armed robbery at scale themselves (civil forfeiture) or other crimes (forcible entry w/o warrant, drug dog abuse, false charges all need to result in criminal action against officers).
