She'll be dissapointed when it ends and finds out nothing else has equaled it 😔. The Pacific is good, better than good IMO, but BoB is still a cut above.

@@TCHC85 There is that. The comedown is hard, if you go looking for that peak right away, but I think the trick is to mix it up and bounce off this into some comedy, or whatever. The Pacific was mostly a letdown for me, but I think worth a watch for the character played by Remi Malek. Darker than I thought the series would go, but better for it... particularly with the contrasting parting of ways scene on the train at the end. It was a very touching, and almost sweet gesture to walk away; knowing you will make another persons life better if you are not there.

The thing about Sobel is, he was the absolute BEST teacher they could’ve ever wished for, but he just wasn’t ready as a leader. One of if not the best show I’ve ever seen.

I believe in Ambrose's book, they to a man say they only survived because of Sobel's tough training. They didn't like him or trust him, but he made them tough. Probably why they had softened on him quite a bit after the war and invited him to reunions that he would never attend.

Right at about the 8:00 mark (Not quite shown in this video) an ever so slight nod and smile crosses Sobel's face. Just the smallest recognition from the director and Schwimmer that Sobel knew exactly what he was doing.

Everybody laughs when they first see "Ross" as a hardass officer. By the end of the episode they've forgotten he's "Ross" because it turns out that David Schwimmer can actually act.

To this day I firmly maintain my belief that it was stunt casting. At the time this came out, Schwimmer was basically the only recognizable actor in the show. So when we see him come out, yelling like a drill sergeant, we feel the exact same sort of eye-rolling, "what are you DOING" kind of feeling that the men of Easy company most likely felt when Sobel was yelling at them. I had officers like him when I was in the army, and it generally felt like watching Ross try to be a hardass 😂

Pound for pound, this might be the greatest show of all time. Glad you're getting into it. Definitely keep the tissues always ready. Also, you'll see LOTS of recognizable actors in this show, before they became huge movie stars

Great cast, great writing, great cinematography, important history, and to top it off, interviews with some of the actual people. This is an excellent combination of documentary and drama, where you get the best of both.

I'm not sure if it'll stay the best ever, but hearing how it's made (iirc they scratched their initial plans of how it's supposed to be after Winters showed disapproval of an episode and decided to take his criticisms to heart afterwards), it will stay at least in the top 10 for a very long time.

Fun fact about the guts in the training exercise. That was their thanksgiving celebration. They were told they were going to get a feast but before they got to eat it they had to do an exercise. All the guts from all the meat butchered for their thanksgiving meal was thrown into the mud and they had to crawl through it. Then, if you were still hungry, you got dinner.

The funny thing is, in every unit of American servicemen since the dawn of time, there is always, that one guy who can imitate everyone especially those people in charge- perfectly!!! Military service in my family has become a tradition. My grandfather was one of 10 boys who served in WW2. He was from a large Swiss farm family consisting of four girls and 12 boys. The oldest boy was too old and the youngest boy was too young for World War II, but later serve 20 years in the Air Force. You hit something on the head really well, the entire American World War II generation the people at home the wives the mothers, the children, as well as the servicemen themselves, who all were affected by and contributed to that effort. I spent Summers with my grandparents in Kansas, I got to know my grandparents and I realize that people from The World War Two Generation are/were truly "The Greatest Generation".

When you mention having to deal with the flight out to the Battle at the end: I was a Medic back in '09 and when we flew out of the states, I had a bunch of air sickness pills for any of our guys who were subject to that. Once I'd handed them out to everyone, heh, I took a handful myself since they caused drowsiness. Knocked my ass out for most of that flight cause holy Crap was I nervous.

This is David Schwimmer's best performance. After playing so many wimpy funny parts, he plays a bad guy here like a real pro. He really makes you despise him. I respected him more after seeing this.

I couldn’t agree more. I was surprised and impressed with Schwimmer’s performance. I’d always loathed his wimpy performances in the past. I was never a fan of “Friends” but he really delivered here.

David Schwimmer absolutely nailed his portrayal as Captain Sobel. You have to remember this is based on a true story. The actors were chosen in part for the resemblance of the real men and they did it with aplomb. Best series ever!

This series is great, you won't be disappointed. I actually had the pleasure of meeting an easy company veteran before he passed away a few years ago. Sadly none of these men are left.. This series has always been favorite of mine because my grandfather served with the 501st (this is about the 506th) during WW2

GREAT reaction, very perceptive! Keep in mind that these "characters" are in fact the actual real-life men from Easy Company. The series takes its name "Band of Brothers" from a great book by the historian Steven Ambrose, and the series is as close to real as it can be, a "docu-drama" if you will. The men you see in the beginning of each episode are the actual surviving (back in 2000-01 when this was filmed) members of Easy Company, but you will not see their names until the very end of the series. Hanks/Spielberg kept them anonymous so you as the viewer would not know who made it thru the war alive. Each episode you have no idea if your favorite "characters" will be okay, or wounded, or die... intentional filmmaking to give you a bit of the feeling of constant uncertainty that these brave men faced in war. Enjoy, I can't wait to see all of your reactions! 🙂

Thank you for your reaction. I believe you will find this among the best miniseries ever made. I love the dichotomy of the Easy Company noncoms saluting Lt. Winters after their reaming from Col. Sink compared to Winters bracing to attention and saluting Sobel in the jeep, while Sobel totally ignores him.

There is the later episode where Sobel is still a captain, but Winters has earned his way to a rank that sufficiently allows him to put Sobel in his place.

You made me remember my reaction to this series, as it connected me to my grandparents and great uncles and aunts who served in and lived through the war. They never talked about it, but after this series I can see why. I look forward to your reactions to the rest of Band of Brothers.

Excellent review. I love this series and I love watching the reactions of first timers discovering this series and how well its made. I look forward to watching along with you. You are very perceptive. Captain Sobel the first commander was excellent at training, but was not a good field commander. Later in life many of the men in the company (including a few of those who were part of the mutinany) acknoweldged it was his hard training them help them stay alive during the very hard days to come. In my opinion this is the greatest TV show ever made and does an excellent job of portraying the war on a very personal level that most war movies and or shows can not reach.

At 8:41 yes, in WWII they had what was called the Army Air Force (USAAF or AAF). It was a land-based aerial warfare service component of the Army. It was the predecessor to the Air Force. And the predecessor to the Army Air Force was the Army Air Corps.. I had a WWII veteran friend who passed away two years ago at age 98. (They are all slowly leaving us, not many left) He was a member of the Army Air Force. He served in the Pacific campaign against the Japanese.

I had family serving on both sides in WW2. I was adopted so I had 4 sets of grandparents, one was in the German Navy and served abord the KM Bismark as an Enginering officer, One was flying B-17s from England 42-45 one was with the resistance in Yugoslavia and one was using his commercial fishing boat in Alaska to help the war effort as a code talker, (He was Tlingit) hall supplies and troops as well as sweep for mines (they would shoot them not pick them up). I hope you enjoy this series, it's probably the best representation of the war to date besides shows like "World At War" that was archive footage and firsthand accounts. Depending on the ship, it can take from 3 to 6 days to cross the Atlantic. The big troop ships were very fast. They could out-run German submarines pretty easily. The cargo ships were much slower.

Speaking from my own experience serving in the Navy, Richard Winters is the kind of leader you would want to have. He cared for the men in his charge and did not shy away from making the difficult decisions. He is a person I would have loved to meet before he passed on. I also loved how humble he was, all through his life. Much respect to all those who served in Easy Company and all those who were a part of the Greatest Generation that served in World War Two, whether at home or in Europe and the Pacific.

OMG!!!!! So you were the only reactor that totally got how hard it was for the dad to put the uniform on to help his son in hacksaw ridge, I’ve been all in from there ma’am!! I remember my good friend asking about 8 years ago one of those weird questions that friends often ask each other just out of boredom sometimes, he ask if I could go back and interview any 2 people in history who would it be? I said Richard Winters and James Stewart. Firm believer It’s a Wonderful Life is still the best film ever conceived! Looking forward to episode two ma’am!!

This is my favorite episode in some ways, if nothing else for the innocence. When Captain Sobel and "Army noodles with ketchup" were their most pressing concerns, while knowing what lies ahead. Be prepared to learn, laugh and suffer with these characters. Currahee ! ♠

The members of Easy admit that Sobel’s training made them better. He was a great training officer but not a good combat leader. FYI, Jimi Hendrix was airborne, 101st. Realizing this you get a different picture from Kiss the Sky.

This series is based on true events and real people so some that you get to know will die. It's a very emotional, thought provoking and at times horrific journey. Everyone should watch it.

I swear on Superman's cape, you are the ONLY person I've seen recognize Micheal Fassbinder in that opening scene. Hell most people do not spot him until episode six.

I have watched this series so many times and just about all the reactions videos as well. I love how you have edited yours and your commentary of different scenes is fantastic. Cant wait to watch the rest of them, pressure is on though, i promise you each episode is going to get harder because they are all full of so many great scenes. Thanks for sharing.

Be careful of spoilers. The writers made this in a,way to let you see some of the acrual Easy Company soldiers interviews, but don't identify them until after the last episode. That way you won't know who survives. But theres already at least one person spouling that.

I've seen some reactors who have chosen to stop reading the comments on this (and other) series because of selfish, thoughtless people doing that early on, which is a real shame, as engagement is a huge factor in the success of their channel. And if you call them out, they get defensive, going "Everybody knows that X did Y, or whatever." And I'm like "Well *they* didn't, did they you dope!" Ruins the experience for everyone else. Such childishness.

This is one of the best series on war, the men who fought, and the horror of it. I watch it once a year and it still gets me. And gives me pride for those who sacrificed and my dad's part in it. He was 8th Air Force. I have a picture of him in London sitting at a table with a shell shocked look I never connected with while he was still here. I get it now. The Army Air Corps lost something like 18-20k pilots and bombing crews in less than a year. They were sacrificed as the Air Corps had no long range fighters with which to cover and protect them on bombing runs. The sacrifice of airman was allowed because it diverted resources which would have prevented the ground troops like Easy Company from achieving their goals.

The old men at the beginning are the actual veterans from Easy Company. You don't know who they are until the end of Episode 10.

so glad your doing this, It was cause how well the movie "Saving Pvt Ryan" did that they (Spielberg / Hanks) were able to do this series. this is based on 2 books the main 1 "Band of Brothers" (1992) and "Parachute Infantry" written by a member of the unit. From the time i was 17 yrs old every Jan at the Battle of the Bulge Reenactment in Fort Indiantown GAP, PA with E/ 506th living history unit we had almost all the org. Troopers with us (along with Troopers from other Airborne units) in our Barrack's and at the public battle. it was this event were i grew up Drinking Prop Blast listing to stories , laughing and singing with these Troopers. God i miss them scalawags those late night drunk Grunt to Grunt talks sitting on bunks with canteen cups of Prop blast and it was this event in 2000 were XXXX read the letter he got from Tom Hanks asking permission to do it. XXXX then asked us what we thought and we shouted a big HELL YES!! lifting our drinks 100+ Drunken Troopers cheering, them were some epic hangovers, Sadly all the Troopers from this unit have made their final Jumps so now they belong to history.

I loved BoB, and really liked seeing so many British/Irish actors slipping so seamlessly in! Damian Lewis, Michael Fassbender, Simon Pegg, James McAvoy, Marc Warren and Dexter Fletcher in particular - pretty mind blowing.

That generation was a different breed. My dad lived through the Great Depression to serve in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. #RIP

Schwimmer always seems to get the same reaction from those who know him as Ross. But he played a great Sobel and one easily begins to no longer see Ross.

This Series is one of the ones that are played on long holiday weekends and that puts it in the likes of spectacular company ---- James Bond, Harry Potter, The Pacific, Star Wars, LOTR, The Matrix, etc

When you go into combat, there is that initial fear and terror at the onset, but once you get on the ground, you fall back on your training and then you're to busy to be scared.

I remember watching this series in 2001... I was 10, and I guess.. a little too young for this kind of show. But it REALLY captured me. To this day every episode remains in my memory

This is a great series very honest in its representation of history. I went through Airborne school as a member of the 101st ABN HQ&HQ Co. 2nd 503rd Infantry about 25 years after the scenes shown here.

When the men of Easy Company went to jump school they were in such good shape that when they were given a PT test they ran the first half of the two miles forward and ran the second mile backwards

Capt Soebel, later in life, attempted suicide. The result of this attempt resulted in him being blind the rest of his life. He died of malnutrition while living in a VA nursing home.

19:48 obviously he is from "office space" as main character in that novie but the next instructor shown is Jason O'Mara and he was in "the man in the high castle" i just figured that one out after watching your reaction. I knew i recognized him  O

Oh, Sink dealt with this crap with Sobel/Winters a couple times. The NCO's resigning was the last straw. Sink knew SObel was a good trainer, but apparently his leadership was in the shitter.

Currahee is a Cherokee word meaning “Stands alone” and is fitting for a paratrooper who’s method of assault is many times alone and cut off from support. But they train to “stand alone, together.” Beautiful use of language IMHO.

The old man on the bicycle probably was in World War 1, (1914-1918), or the Boer wars in South Africa (1898-1902). I think he knew exactly what was going on.

The character of a true leader, General Eisenhower drafted a second letter in case of failure on D-Day. "Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that Bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone." The funny part is that when you look at the actual letter, he mistakenly dated it July 5th.

Sobel was petty and vindictive but he was an excellent training officer. In fact, Easy company members credit his training for their many successes during the war. He was a horrible combat leader though.

Good launch. You did manage to catch all the main points. Some reactors get overcome with the details and miss important parts. You will be able to deal with the developing story. It helps that this is a personal viewpoint of the war told through the eyes and experiences of real GIs. I will be watching.

Those men being interviewed at the very beginning were the real men who the actors are portraying. As the series progresses you’ll learn who is who.
