22:09 Ray Wise (who played the part of "Leon", the dark haired criminal) said in an interview that the explosion in the building was larger than the effects crew had planned, and because those actors were standing so close to it (some of Ray Wise's hair was even singed by the heat) they were given stunt pay for that scene in addition to their regular actor pay. Ray then said in the interview that they spent the rest of the film trying to get close to explosions so they would get paid more "bonuses."

The OST is top tier as well. Basil Poledouris mixed synthesized and orchestral musics to highlight the machine part and the human/emotional part of Murphy. The score gets more symphonic as Robocop remembers that he is Murphy.

It's ironic you mentioned Batman cause Peter Weller, Robocop himself, voiced an older Batman in an animated adaptation of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, and Miller actually did write a Robocop vs. Terminator comicbook & he wrote the script for Robocop 2 & 3 (the 2nd movie was heavily rewritten, but years later Miller's original script was turned into a comicbook graphic novel. I think the 3rd movie was heavily rewritten also).

Not sure if it was mentioned already but a lot of reactors usually miss these two details because I always hear them ask "How did he recognize him?" and "Was that acid"? 1) During the gas station scene Emil recognized Robocop as the officer they recently killed because of the line "Dead or Alive, you're coming with me". Murphy said that line just before he was brutally killed. 2) At the abandoned steel mill when Emil attempts to ram Robocop with the truck, there was a sign on the container that's marked "Toxic Waste".

One of the best films of all time. The remake is a perfect example of why people hate remakes. It was clear the director of the remake had very little understanding of what made Robocop 1987 a classic. felt like they were trying to turn Robocop into Iron Man meets the Dark Knight. What a disaster!

Hope this is the Director's Cut! Arnold Schwarzenegger, Armand Assante, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer,Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Berenger were considered for the role of RoboCop until Peter Weller was cast. Weller lost 10 lbs a day from wearing the original suit, and he couldn't eat any solid foods except for PBJ Sandwiches Ice cream Yogurt and Oatmeal. It was 110 degrees in Dallas Texas in 1986, so the effects team had built an air conditioning unit inside the suit to prevent Weller from passing out. The stop motion animation effects were done by Phil Tippet whom would later win Best Visual Effects for JURASSIC PARK. The film was a box office and critical success, making $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget.

@@senyum0 Yeah I LOVE the 2nd one. It's still got the edge to it (if maybe a bit more sleazey and nasty), it's got an awesome robotic enemy in 'RoboCain' and you still got Weller putting on a fantastic performance as RoboCop and nailing it even bringing more laughs as he portrays an overly 'PC' RoboCop with all those unnecessary directives that got uploaded into him. There's just something about the way Weller talks and delivers those lines that just make it great. :) 3rd one? Well... I like Dr Lazarus... and the weapon arm.

25:01 when Murphy said his name at the end, people in the theaters, back in 1987, went NUTS. the applause was DEAFENING. Also, the studios thought the movie would BOMB, it actually took a few years to find a studio to actually make the movie. Verhoven, who made the movie, originally threw the script in the trash without reading it. It was his wife, who actually read the script, told him, "This is GOOD STUFF, MAKE THIS MOVIE!" So, give thanks to MRS. VERHOVEN, folks.

8:08 Actually, he was. Dr. Fax in Robocop 2 even speaks of how Murphy was a success in OCP's cybernetic's project. What kept him going was his love for his wife and his boy...note how THAT's what he was thinking about in the hospital. He said, "NO, I will NOT die here, now.....I gotta protect my family".

14:21 It's set in the year 1990. In the Robocop arcade game, it stated 1990, and in the made for video series, "Robocop: Prime Directives", Murphy's gravestone says 1990 for the year he 'died'. Prime Directives takes place about 10 years later, and Murphy's son, now grown up, is an OCP employee. In the 1988 Robocop cartoon, made by Marvel Comics, the narrator says "Detroit, the near future". In 1987, 1990 was a near future.

A very underrated line at 11:55: "kids... got to meet in person what they parents only read about in comic books". It's a sarcastic reference to the movie's dystopian future, where people have generally become more ignorant (that's why they laugh at terrible unfunny comedy - "I'll buy that for a dollar"), and adults don't read books, but comic books. It's easy to miss it nowadays, 'cause in some way the satire has become reality!

One of my fave movies ever and certainly my most watched. And it still holds up so great today too. Well, the long armed Dick Jones dummy in his death scene looks bad but it always did. The other effects hold up great and even though you know the shots of ED-209 moving are stop motion it still looks great and you just appreciate the hard work and time that went into the stop motion animation. My fave thing about this movie though has to be Weller. The absolute perfect actor for this role. Even though as a 'robot' the character isn't designed to emote much or move about like a human, Weller still brings this charm and humanity to the character whether in the motions he devised for the character or that voice that manages to somehow often sound flat and yet full of heart at the same time. Other actors tried to be RoboCop after he stopped but NONE got it right.

Problem with ED-209 is that like most Police equipment, it was designed for the Military but they didn't want it and now a Company had a bunch of Robots that they could only sell to the Police or something. Also Murphy was able to be slightly alive due to the Armor Vest, the shotgun fires metal pellets that can't get through it and it stops pistol rounds to a certain point

0:04 That tallest building in the background there, with that red cherry light, my uncle worked at that building during the 80's.

Trivia: they originally wanted Arnold Schwarzenegger to be Murphy. Problem is Arnold's so big, that the Robocop suit on him would NOT look right on him, for his massive physique, and the bulky suit would make his head look too small. This is why they instead went for Peter Weller, for his slim frame made it easier to get the suit to look right on him. Also, his gun, they purposefully made Robocop's gun look like a coffin, take a good, long look at the gun barrel, that's a damned COFFIN.

i remember watching this as a kid, it was amazing! still love it today, the whole media thing still relevant, the dirty corporations. one of my favorite lines was "I'll buy that for a dollar!" glad you watched it! the 2nd was a great follow up, the 3rd not my fav, but you watch it and make up your own mind. i don't like it when people say "don't watch the sequel, it sucks" then the reactor might miss out, and might have enjoyed it.

The director (Verhoeven)'s absurd and macabre sense of humor + distrust/satirization of Authority comes, in part, from his PTSD from childhood. He was a child under Nazi occupation in WWII and saw his innocent neighbors killed by Allied (the "good" guys) bombing. Arguably he channeled that pain into his silly, violent, all-bets-off films.

They never said Robocop was "24 hour guy." That was the robot that killed the dude in the office in the beginning.

25:30 A lot of us consider RoboCop, Totall Recall and Starship Trooper to be a trilogy. It's Verhoeven's sci-fi political trilogy. There are two official sequels though. Robocop 2 & 3. Robocop 2 is made by Irvin Kershner who also made Empire Strike Back. It's rather good.

14:40 You know what's fascinating????? Paul McCrane, who played criminal Emil Antonowsky, also portrayed the heavily-bandaged man in the wheelchair who Rocky autographs the head of when he leaves the hospital in Rocky 2!!!!!! He looked a whole lot more innocent back then!!!!

The '80s when movies were made for adults but marketed to kids. The nearly perfect movie If it weren't for the fact that Dick Jones's arms turned into like slender Man arms as he was falling to his death and for some reason they used a drill bit to screw the LED tracking screen onto Murphy's face every other facet of this movie was nailed out of the park. You never question the fact that they had a fully armed prototype in the boardroom doing a product test. Or a Chrome plated desert eagle with live ammunition in a magazine ready to go in the same boardroom. Outside of the context of this movie, who does that? But in this movie It's perfect and you don't even think to question it.

Robocop 2 is good & slightly terrifing. Robocop 3 is still good but very silly. Still love these classics. There is also a remake that was made in the 2010's.
