TheASTrader think of it like this: in the ready to grow medium, there is already enough nutrients for the plant to take up yet in the coconut coir there is a lack of nutrients therefore the plant spends its energy on growing big roots desperately seeking those nutrients it needs for survival. Whereas the plants that already have sufficient nutrients actually need less roots so they may focus on upward growth. If you try coconut coir and feed with work castings and chicken or fish poop I bet it’s perfect 🤨

For sunflower seed micro greens I like 1/2” of coir on a screen with 3% hydrogen peroxide sanitized seeds on top. I cover with pressure until radicals extend well below screen I then bottom water with H2O and reverse top blackout pressure tray, after top radicals get to 2”. - 2 1/2” I reverse blackout cover and bottom water with very week hydroponic solution. Always leave air between water and mesh/coir (Kratke method variation).

I would have added weak hydroponic fertilizer solution after the first set of leaves. I think if you tested in this manner you would have much better results from the coir.

I suggest a test with a cocopeat alone, cocopeat + compost, and potting mix. Maybe a fourth with perlite also just for reference to the actual mix you create. My results have been best with cocopeat + perlite + compost. Also making your own mix gives the flexibility to adjust it to the plant you are planting. Some prefer less water holding to others and some don't need as much compost as others.

Another reason the roots from the coco coir is much longer and more developed is because the coco coir is so poor in nutrient and that forces the plants to send out more roots to suck up whatever little nutrients there are. You don't get that situation with the potting mix because it has added slow release fertilizers and therefore the plants don't need to be that desperate for nutrients as to force them to extend their roots out too long.

I live in Belize and see a ton of coconut husks being discarded. I think with a small shredder/ masticator I could help a local get started with his own micro business here. First buy educating and supplying local farmers and landscapers and then perhaps compressing and exporting. I found this while researching mediums for my vertical garden and it was great info. This is a brilliant idea; most coconut coir is processed in sea water which means it must be pre-buffered with calcium. If there were coco coir on the market that wasn't loaded with sodium as a raw material, it would be much cheaper to bring to market. Good luck!

Absolutely go for it! If you can charge money to haul it away for them then you can make money on both ends of the deal! See if there are small scale shredders you can get to test the idea before dropping thousands of dollars on a big machine. It might be tough to be constantly educating your customers so see if you can find the people who already know the benefits of coconut coir like gardeners. I have a side business selling horse manure. I would be all over that opportunity.

Coir must be soaked dried and stored for years before it is ready for market. You also have to have strict quality control standards during the aging process. Not as easy as one would think

Discovered coir a few weeks ago. Used it as a replacement for peat. A bit pricey but it works as advertised. Made a soil mix of approximately 30% soil, 25% coir, 25% manure, 20% peat (kept the peat low to maintain the ph value. Seedlings are thriving.

You dont need to worry aboud the top part of the plat, you need the roots to perform better if you transplant it now in firtile soil it will out grow the potting mix dew to the better root system.

Great video! Learned a lot from this and your channel in general. I think the reason why roots on the coco coir are more than the roots on the potting mix is that it needs to have more roots to capture more nutrients from the coco coir while the potting mix already have enough nutes so roots don't have to be that much to capture it. Just my observation. Don't take my word for it. Overall it's a very informative video. Keep it up!

This year I made a mix of Coconut coir 1 part (25 %), grade 1 part (25%) vermiculite and 2 parts (50 %) compost for new 4x4 raised bed. The tomato plants, carrots, and tarragon appear to like the mix. Too soon to confirm if Genova basil likes mix or not., calendula also appears to like mix. If this works, I will do same mix for any new beds. I blended sheep compost, mushroom compost & sea compost in equal parts

I use coco coir for my cannabis grow. I use the Canna Coco 50L which is already prewashed in the facility to eliminate all the salt build up making the medium buffered. Coco dry bricks are usually not buffered so if you just hydrate the brick and start using you will have issues with calcium and magnesium defiency as the cation sites in the medium will draw and lock up calcium and magnesium making these nutrients unavailable to the plants roots.

***** Thank you, nice to know you liked the videos. Regarding reusing potting mixes, it varies by plants. For example, corn, tomatoes and taro root have a very dense root system in which case I chop up the roots and put most of my soil in the compost bin, re-using the loose soil left (about 40%). But shallow rooted and less dense rooted veggies like beans, radish etc do not have hairy roots so their soil can be easily reused. Just add some organic matter and its good to go!

I wish I could show pics of what I did this weekend. I've been buying things little by little being that I'm new to gardening and things have easily added up. I bought the red wood for the 3 vegetable raised beds, a few tomatoe cages, the organic garden soil, the azomite, vermiculate, peat moss, planters here and there and I have to say that I've spent a few hundred on all this. I don't mind. I know it's all worth it. I even bought a little white picket fence to keep my dog out of the beds, but that darn dog just jumped right over the fence :( anyway. I was hoping to keep him from peeing or pooping in the beds. Any ideas on how to keep pets out other than putting that netting over them? Wish I knew how to upload a picture so you can see my garden!! I planted all my little vegetables that have been growing in clear plastic cups in the last few weeks, but had been started from peat pellets like you and CaliKim9 showed me. I'm still waiting to see your video on how to compost. This is my 3rd compost pile that I've been working on and I think I took out the compost before it was actually finished. I hope that isn't a problem...hmm?

As far as keeping pets off, one thing that works is getting dried fox urine (LOL) Home Depot sells it for cheap. Sprinkling this will keep most critters away but its hard to keep your dog off your plants :) you have to use a high fence for that! mygreenzebra Interestingly, I'm making one video right now for growing radish in a sand-based growing medium. The results are going to be interesting and I will post it as soon as I harvest them. Coconut coir is nice, a bit too loose in consistency when used alone, but when mixed with perlite and compost its form a great texture which is porous as well as lasts a long time!

Coco peat MUST be buffered with calmag first. Add 50g to 20l (60 to 25l, depending on your brick's instructions) water, then pH and add coir. Doing it in the bath is convenient. It has to stand for 12 hours, then move it to one side and pull the plug up a bit, for the water that is not soaked up, to drain slowly. then add vermiculite or perlite to your own desire and climate.

How do you think they would compare if you were to water using a diluted liquid fertilizer twice a week? I've been watering twice a week with a 6-6-7 fertilizer. There seems to be a mix-up between coco coir and coco peat...there is youtube to explain the big difference, and yet most these gardener gurus or youtube producers, a mix up is very real: coco coir is the fiber part (like threads) and coco peat is small grit remove from the coco husk, from the fiber where these sand-like coco peat comes from..coir is used for brooms, for doormats, and for hanging flower garden, using a processed coco coir or fiber... the right word is COCO PEAT to compare the advantage against peat moss!...

I mixed coco coir with builder's sand (approx. 5:1) for a tropical hibiscus, and it's not doing as fine as it did in a regular mix. It seems to hold to much moisture. Last time I planted it in a cacti/bonsai mix and it grew crazy, lots of leaves & flowers. What can I do/expect?

+Sandeep Sachdeva Compost is made from food scarps, leaves etc which is broken down by mostly soil bacteria. Vermicompost is the waste product of earth worms when they eat food scraps and excrete. Vermicompost is more difficult to produce in bulk (hence expensive). But vermicompost is much more nutrition dense than compost. Compost is a must for gardening, vermicompost is optional but very very good source of nutrients. Hope that helps!

+Sandeep Sachdeva I generally use 1 part coco peat, 1 part perlite/vermiculite and 1 part compost and mix it. The part could be any size as long as you use the same to measure out each ingredient. Hope that helps!

Why do so many of these test give nutrients to the soil but not to the coco? Coco is like Hydro it needs to be given nutrients with each feeding of water.

+snatcher420 That is correct, I was just doing a direct comparison but yes coco coir is an inert medium and does need nutrients.

A direct comparison is only possible if all other variables are controlled (and equalized), which they were not in this comparison.

Fish/Blood/Bone/Feather? In order to grow a pot plant a little healthier they would take a life of an animal? I don't think pains & sufferings of animals would do any good to my plant so I would rather prefer to go synthetic or use many other organic (plants only) alternatives out there.

Agreed! This is why I have several options presented for both animal lovers/vegans and the rest. If you are an animal lover/vegan, an option is to use salt based fertilizers along with compost/worm castings. Good luck!

Oh and yes by the way if you are buying anything "organic" be aware that fish/blood/bone is the most commonly used organic fertilizer blend.

Thanks for your tip. & yes I'm not the animal lover or fit in any other similar categories that you were talking about. Only thing is the logic of animal sufferings for little better growth of my plants doesn't make senses to my naked human mind.
