I played baseball (Catcher) all thru high school and university back in Japan. In fact scouts told me I was a AAA prospect if it wasn't for the fact I was female and no team was interested in a female players Having played a bit of cricket here I can tell you a cricket ball is a little harder than a baseball. The leather cover is a lot thinner, and it stiffer and harder than on a baseball. A cricket ball feels like a rock with a thin veneer of leather on it.

Bowling has a higher skill level than baseball pitching. The seam on the ball and the fact the ball has to pitch [hit the ground] allows for greater variation in technique. Check out spin bowling!
@cricketexplained8526
@cricketexplained8526 2 жыл бұрын
They are both equally hard to my eye as a cricket fan. Bowlers have at least physical stumps to aim at. Pitchers must know exactly where the strike zone is. Plus in baseball there are roughly 15 specific pitches all generated from a single basic throwing action. Some have cut or spin applied. If you look up the MLB video on pitch types, and a couple videos on how they are thrown, you'd be surprised. I was.
@drunkpaulocosta9301
@drunkpaulocosta9301 2 жыл бұрын
I dunno about harder both spin bowlers and alot of curve specialist type pitchers both use unnatural actions for the shoulder and have almost the exact same injuries and problems in later life. Both grip. Air movement and stregth are factors. The only difference is the seam stuff and the bounce. But most of that is equal to the types of drifting deliveries(pitches) in baseball and the difficulty of something like a 105mph fastball ect. Baseball is harder to be good at. Where as cricket requires great mental skill and kbowledge of the game in every position regardless of where you actually play or if you are a bowler or batsman.

The majority of cricket commentators are former international players. The commentators you alluded to were Michael Slater former Australian opening batsman and Ian Smith former New Zealand wicketkeeper. When nations play against each other, the commentators are generally drawn from the two nations. At a World Cup tournament like this one, there are commentators from nearly all of the competing countries and one game may feature commentators from four or five different nations. The popularity of the game has increased in recent years and there are currently 105 members of the ICC.

I played both baseball and cricket here in Oz. Starting pitcher for NSW 20 years ago. Cricket ball is harder, not much though. One stitch and red leather. Where as the white leather on a b ball is more subtle and slightly soft when it’s new. Then starts to get harder. Like those old baseballs that turn dark brown and you can put them out of the park easily

It's super hard, like a rock, and has this raised seam running through its circumference that really cuts through skin super easy. So breaking some bones in your fingers when getting hit, splitting the webbing in your hand while catching, getting a concussion and bleeding when getting hit on the head, having your toes broken.. all are pretty common.

Cricket ball has a cork and string inner core covered by leather . Weighs 5 ounces . Hard like a walnut shell but softens throughout the course of the innings , Ball is replaced every 480 deliveries by a brand new ball Canada plays in limited over cricket ( 20 to 50 overs ) but not in tests . Tests are the ultimate and more skilled version and last for 5 days . The best teams tend to be Australia, India and England where the game is very popular . But other countries play and at times exceed those three countries . Other countries that play test cricket include South Africa , Pakistan , New Zealand , Sri Lanka, West Indies ,Zimbabwe , Bangladesh, Ireland , Afghanistan Countries that play limited over cricket include Scotland , Holland, Canada and a few others usually from former commonwealth countries

Cricket is second/thrid most famous sport in Aus , NZ , England and number one in India, Pakistan, bangladesh, srilanka !! 3. As a person who have used both of them, I can tell the baseball ball is heavier than cricket ball, cricket ball is also made of leather but the layering is little thin compared to baseball. Baseball has all around stitching, but cricket ball has two lines across the ball.

Cricket used to be popular in the USA before the mid-19th century, there was a period when the New York cricket teams got lots more sports coverage than the baseball ones. I think the main theory is that cricket lost support because it was associated with the British Empire. Both of them probably come from a common ancestor (along with rounders) rather than baseball being derived from cricket; Jane Austen mentions a game called baseball in the UK in some of her books.

The "catcher" behind the batsman is refered to as the wicketkeeper and is the only fielder allowed to wear gloves. The gloves are for prorection of his since he have to catch so many balls. The wicketkeeper is a specialised role and usually have the abolity equivalent to a soccer goal keeper. Everybody else, bare hands. Close in fielders (only a few meters away from the batsman) also wear helmets but no gloves.

Cricket balls are very hard. Even tough speed of the ball is a bit slower than in baseball the bowler swing/spin it which make it very difficult for the batter to accurately hit the ball. Full toss balls like that in base ball are considered as bonus in cricket as batters usually hit them to boundary rope.

Baseball is derived from “rounders” a British game that never really took off beyond the school yard. It may well share an early cricket ancestor in general bat and ball game, but its not a real parent-child relationship like Rugby and American Football. Best way to describe cricket for Americans: It’s just like baseball, except in every possible way. The player like the catcher in baseball is called the wicket-keeper. They are allowed to wear gloves, because there job is to catch every ball that is not hit. There are no strikes in cricket for not hitting the ball, so the batsman doesn’t have to hit it. However if the “keeper” doesnt stop a ball the batsman leave, they can steal a run. Im not sure that is an Australian announcer, but a New Zealander. Incan see why an American might get confused, we have the same trouble with American/Canadian accents. That game was New Zealand vs Australia. Australia competed the first test match against England way back in 1877. It was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, which is the largest stadium in the southern hemisphere. They also invented the shorter form of the game called One Day Internationals (ODI) I believe this is the ODI cup, but it could be T20, an even shorter form of the game. Australia competed and hosted the first T20 match too. The difference between ODI and T20 is the length. An ODI is 50 “overs”, an over being 6 deliveries, so eavh innings will be 300 balls (one innings per side). A T20 is 20 overs, 120 deliveries. Test cricket, the oldest and longest form, lasts until both teams have completed 2 innings each. However an innings only ends when a side has 10 of their 11 players out. If that doesn’t happen after 5 days, the match is a draw (not a tie, which only happens when the scores are even at the end of a match).

4:23 A blinder is: An excellent performance in a game or race. Example "Marinello played a blinder in his first game". I offer an explanation. A fast play or shot was so fast you didn't see it. Or the game was so good you have to be blind not to see how good the game was or player was. Difficult to know the origins of some British sayings. some say that is blindingly obvious with English.

Cricket is huge in Australia and Aus has been dominant in the sport for the past 3 decades - we are the team to beat. We have 6 World Cup trophies out of a possible 13, most recent was last week beating India in India after India had not lost a game all series. The greatest batsmen ever is Australian - Don Bradman who averaged 99.94 runs per innings in tests, second highest I think is 62. Arguably the best bowler ever as well Shane Warne - Sri Lankans may not agree with Murali getting more test wickets however, a lot of those were against the bottom end opponents whereas Warne got most of his wickets against the top end as well as competing with world class talent for his wickets in fast bowlers such as Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, Gillespie etc. We currently have the Test ICC champions trophy along with ‘The Ashes’ (England hasn’t won a test match in Australia for over a decade) And yes, we used to have the best cricket commentary/announcers to go along with it 😂 unfortunately most of them have passed away or retired - I have a hard time listening to cricket these days as they made the game amazing to watch. Depending on who you talk to regarding the best formats, cricket tragics and purists like me will tell you Test is the best and it’s the main unit of measurement when reviewing players achievements. One-dayers are second but unfortunately losing out to T20 - a dumbed down version of the game imo.

Apologies in advance, this is going to be a long reply! Although Baseball is the most similar game in the US, the game I prefer to compare it to is American Football (I'll refer to it as football from now on, just for simplicity) because they have a similar barrier to entry. There is a lot of complexity in both that you need a reason to get through that initial info dump, so if you grow up with a sports fan who spends a lot of time watching, you can pick up the details by osmosis just by spending time with them, but for outsiders they need some other motivation. Without that grounding, you can look at whole sequences of play and not get what is happening. Both cricket and football have significant moments of nothingness. A maiden over (an over where no runs are scored) can be huge late in a match, like forcing a team to punt when they are behind in the fourth quarter as they both increase the pressure on a team to do more with what plays that have remaining, but in isolation they just look like nothing has happened. I figure that is going to be an issue for some people in liking the sport. The next similarity is just how much football and cricket have going on at that 'macro' tactical level compared to rugby and baseball. Football is very much a game of formations and adjusting to what the opponents offer you, and cricket is really similar compared to rugby and baseball which have pretty much fixed formations. There is a ridiculous list of named fielding positions in cricket which is a rabbit hole in itself, and the reason this matters is because the captain and the bowler adjust the field according to what they are trying to do - they might have a lot of fielders deep if they are OK with the batting team picking up a few cheap runs, or they might be more close in with a few deep fielders to try and tempt the batter* in to trying to hit 4s and 6s, or they might have a few players positioned where a batter is known to miss hit a shot from a particular type of delivery (so sometimes you can see a 3rd or 4th 'slip' to the side of the wicket keeper to try and pick up an edge)... Once you can appreciate those details, the whole pitch becomes significant as you see the batter trying to adjust to what they are offered, sometimes stepping forward or to the side to change up their hitting angles. There may be videos about the fielding positions, but I wouldn't know where to start with recommending one, sorry. I grew up with the sport so I've not had the need to chase down that sort of extra knowledge. They both also benefit from a number of different forms of attack - the batting team can be very aggressive or very cautious, and the fielding team can mix up the bowling from swing to seam to fast to spin depending on what the pitch offers and what the batter is comfortable in dealing with, so to me that compares to an NFL team being run heavy, or deep passes vs shorter but generally safer ones against a defence who are doing a lot of blitzes, or sitting back in zones. It again leads back to that issue of nuance in why a team is trying one approach now vs at a different stage or situation isn't immediately obvious. Ultimately, I prefer cricket to baseball for the same reason I prefer football to rugby - there is so much more happening in the details that I find rewarding while still having spectacular plays whereas I feel like baseball and rugby are more dependent upon particular big moments. I have however stopped watching NFL as I can't see the big hits without wondering what the long term impacts of that, especially after Dave Duerson's actions in donating his brain for study (I write fairly euphemistically...). It's not simply that I'm British and grew up with the game, it's that the nature of cricket's variety is a much richer palette for me to dive in to. I love how the different forms of bowling look and the problems they cause. I love seeing that chess match as the batter tries to take control of what he is offered (and someone striding down the wicket to launch the ball for a 6 over a bowler's head is still magnificent). I love how much more visceral a wicket is vs a strike, like when you see the stumps smashed out of the ground by a yorker that went by the batter. I love the catches (and something you may have missed with the West Indies catch at the 3:10 mark approximately is that although he caught it initially, he had to let the ball go or he'd carry it over the boundary and make it a six, so he threw it up so he could step out and come back in to complete the catch - there are 'boundary catch and save' videos for a good reason!). The run outs are even more impressive when you see someone hitting a target that is maybe 1-3" wide from 20-30 yards, while running to field the ball. Even the different forms of the game have their own character, such as the hyper aggressive T20 format vs the much more measured test format which can take days to fully bloom in to a spectacle (especially for a newer audience who may well miss the details). Even the batting is richer comparing drives to sweeps to hooks... If you love the details, then cricket might be the game for you, it just may also take some time getting to the point where you fully appreciate the moments of nothingness for what they are. Thanks for a fun video, hope this reply wasn't too essayish! *-ICC recently decided to change the term batsman to the more gender neutral batter, but it's likely to take some time to bed in with older fans... I think I wrote batsman every time before correcting it!
