Quick weekend update...
If you're wondering how I learned Spanish I learned it working as a nurse in California because a lot of my patients spoke Spanish! I hope to reach fluency in Dutch as well by the time I turn 30 (two years). That will be a huge achievement for me to be trilingual even though a lot of you Europeans are :)

The duvet in the Netherlands is a late arrival. It was more common in neighboring or other European countries. Over 50 years ago, the dominant comforter was a woolen blanket and in non-heated bedrooms in winter, blankets got added depending on e.g. "ice flowers" on the window panes, inside. These blankets would be large enough to arrest them under the mattress on three sides. The Dutch duvet is relatively large. Go to Germany and it is so small that you have to go to sleep on some motion-phobia or else you wake up cold. By the way, our inclination to move in our sleep has a genetic component. I have the mild motion variant, but some people may wake up with their head at the feet-end of the bed in the morning.

I like my duvet because it is WARM! Much warmer then the old-fashioned sheet / comforter combination. And I can tuck it in at the sides better. Which I appreciate because I used to be able to scrape the ice from the inside of my bedroom windows in the past, when we still had a winter and only single-pane windows. Note that in many multi-story houses, the top (bedroom) floor is not heated, heating is switched off for the night and many people leave a window open. In the summer it gives me better options to e.g. keep my legs or shoulders in the open, to better regulate my temperature.

I don't want my bed to look tidy lol, I keep it wide open to limit housemites. But yeah it is annoying when the "dekbedovertrek" sneaks up too high and you have to redo it in the middle of the night. Eventually you'll be able to do it in a half sleep state though.

duvet is light and it breaths. a sheet and comforter are generally much heavier and more stuffy, especially sheets and comforters for the winter.

Traditionally we used to have sheets and woollen blankets but that required regular ‘dry cleaning’ of the woollen blankets. In the 1970-1980s people adopted the Scandinavian duvet ( via IKEA?) as this protects your blanket and later down or synthetic filled inner, so it’s less work. Agree it’s hard to make look tidy given the fluffy inner material. If you can find Woolen inner filling duvet it’s heavier and will look tidier. Some prefer it as it holds down better. (They used to have them at IKEA not sure they still do) traditionally people used to cover the Duvet with a spread across the whole bed( sprei) but that is rare now. Good luck

What a nice surprise! I had even a house in Hamburg, where I went to school. And later to the UBA (Universidad de Buenos Aires). I learned spanish & english at the same time, they were may be my my 4th or 5th language at 5 years of age. 01:13 we returned to "normalcy" (I don´t speak dutch, and am struggling with continental portuguese in Coimbra at this moment). In the video you told your age, that is an expression of youth, I hide mine 😃. We europeans like duvets because it´s the only cover which really protects from real cold (0 C or even below). Nice short vid. ¡Greetings! 🙂

We use to go to a Mexican Restaurant called Rosa’s Cantina in Amsterdam. It was the closest to the real thing. Great Margarita’s 😃 However that was a long time ago. It is worth a try🤔 I fully agree with you with regard to duvets 😂😂😂 I order my sheets from Lands End and make my bed the American way🙂 Word of warning it is best to have whatever you order from the US delivered to family in the US and then when you go back for holidays take an extra suitcase to bring back. Don’t forget to take it out of the package and wash it before packing it. After all it is a gift from family. 😉 The import charges and taxes will make the sheets very expensive if you have the delivered here in Holland.

I love the reactions on the dekbedovertrek. Nothing to add there 🤣 I'm wondering what you're opinion is about 'normal' Dutch coffee? (DE roodband snelfilter koffie) compared to the American coffee. I really don't like the Starbucks giant mugs off coffee (slootwater) because they don't taste like coffee to me. And it is a lot of coffee. I love the real Italian espresso for a caffeine shot or just a normal cup of DE coffee in the morning with breakfast. Wat do you like and what does the average American like as a coffee?
@andreslucero81
@andreslucero81 2 жыл бұрын
Growing up in the US, almost all coffee was filtered coffee. Drip coffee makers were pretty much a kitchen staple, and that’s also what you get if you order coffee at a cafe or restaurant. I haven’t tried DE, but I imagine it’s about the same as Folgers or other big brands in the US. I agree Starbucks tastes terrible, but they helped popularize espresso drinks and now more people are using Nespresso or similar coffee pods in their homes. But it’s pretty rare for average Americans to have a real espresso maker, I think.

You’re filling the blanks for the Nespresso person, don’t you just don’t no what they are thinking and who gives a **** what he’s going to think. I would always go for the taste, that kick triggers my ADD that I’m almost an ADHD’er and makes me feel rushed. Pathé Tuschinski is last year voted most beautiful film theater of the world.

One of the main reasons I miss CA is the Mexican food. Nothing that we have here compares to it. I found that the best places to get your tacos or whatever are the cars on the side of the road, and where the proprietors hardly speak any English or none. I wish we had those places here.

With the duvets, make sure the inner en outer layer are the same size and find the ones that you can button up at the bottom and you should be alright.

And when all of that is perfect, just watch for it to be a big mess no matter what. I always have a corner missing halfway , try to put my hand in and fix it but grap another corner and have to start all over. I should learn that 'inside out ' technique.

That question of the duvet falling out (means you are moving about while sleeping), I do that to so I ironed 2 patches of velcro in the corners on the opposite side of the buttons. You can do that also on all corners. But I still use the playing a ghost method of filling the sleeve.( small children love it ) there is prob. a great explanation video on KZbin.

I would use the ghost method when making a bed for others. But for myself.. I lay it on the bed, grab a corner and push it into it's place. Bite into it to keep it in place while doing the other one, and then just shake it violently lol.

XD hahaha I was like what is a duvet = dekbedovertrek, it has to do with hygiene and is common throughout all of Europe, Middle-East, Asia, not sure about Afrika/rest of the world. So yeah it is hygiene since your pillow covers, matrass covers, etc. you would usually clean regularly since sleep and hygine is important. Certainly if you have any allergies then washing them on 60 degree Celsius will kill all germs, 40 degrees if you only need basic hygiene. But now let me tell you about the Dutch extra's elektrische matrasverwarmer = electric mattress warmer it is a low temperature device that keeps you warm in bed or your feet only (putting the main temperature of the house on low setting) and the liquid proof sheets pillow, duvet, mattress protector (for x times or children) combine with energy saving and max darkness our blackout curtains (verduisterende gordijnen) are very heavy usually for winter time to safe up on energy bills. as for the Pathé, what you got is a fancy extra normally you would not have that option, only large one in main cities. Also there is a monthly subscription of Pathé for unlimited movies to watch in whole Netherlands and one more expansive for high discount on popcorn/food+drinks. As for coffee, we also have non-caffeine version. As caffeine is a drug and is unhealthy.

Pathé Tuschinski is a former opera house, several minutes away there's another (modern) movie theater of the same company. To give both a purpose they've started to diversify their experiences. Pathé Tuschinski obviously caters to a higher class more adult audience. You can get wine, get an actual glass, less kids movies, etc. It's really popular for red carpet events for obvious reasons. Tickets tend to be more expensive though, you pay for the service. The other is more family friendly, cheaper and more massive. As for proper Mexican food, the Netherlands has no decent Mexican population. I mean there's a reason 'American food' is found in the ethnic/world food aisles in the supermarket.

Tuschinski is not a former opera house. It was built as a movie theater. Before the start of the film, yes guys grandfather is talking, an orchestra was playing. And during the intermission, artists performed. Every now and then there was a special evening with famous artists. Ziggo dome did not exist yet.

There are theaters that have the same sort of concept as Americans, but the Tuschinski is very beautiful indeed and the top of the line of the art deco style architecture, there are more theaters with the same sort of concept aswel. Mr Tuschinski was a victim of the Holocaust. I don't know why we have duvet it just became fashion and we stuck with it I guess.

A duvet I don't know where you talking about, I searched it you mean a dekbed. I never put it in the cover anymore. Using the cover as a sheet. There are tricks to get the dekbed in the cover. Ask your mother in law, then you don't have to divorce or you just going to use sheats and blankets as whe have done for centuries in the Netherlands. I only started to use a dekbed when I went living on myself and I still asking myself why. But now I have invested in it and starting all over I find to expensive, so as I told you now I use the cover as a sheet and the dekbed as a blanket.
