While I love cactus, there's so many cool native plants in general that people are unaware of and should be planted more in our landscapes. So the plant at 8:10 is encelia farinosa (brittlebush), in the sunflower family. In fact, they appear throughout the video just not that noticeable because they look like sticks but they are very much alive. Incredibly common in southern California and the southwest, bluish-grey leaves, it has a resin that was chewed by Native Americans. It goes summer-dormant, then springs to life after the winter rains. However, you can keep it lush looking with a little summer irrigation and I've seen it shaped as a hedge by unaware gardeners that live next to wildlife reserves. If you guys come back in the spring or early summer, the area should be a gorgeous blanket of yellow when the encelia is blooming. I grow some by seed, super easy; seeds are also well-loved by birds just like regular sunflowers.

Terrence quotes... One time I became the incarnation of Terrence McKenna.... I had even experienced the sparkly secret of the DeMsTers a few times after that and saw how the cords got connected... We need more of us! Electric show, brother!

Quest, im on afternoons this week, and ive got a lot of free time so i find myself watching your dessert adventures while killing time in the break room. I always love your silly video editing styles, and especially love the Terrence Mckenna bit at the end. Youre lucky to have access to such beautiful landscapes and desserts... im at a climate zone where prickly pear is about all that can survive outside year round. RIP Terrence

I love the longer videos too! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Feel like I am always learning new species and stuff I never knew on every episode and I love it! Favorite 🌵📺 Cactus show out there!! Those Jumping Chollas are scary but dang they are beautiful! Those Mammillaria, ferocactus, and agave 😘👌🌵😍!!! Those Mammillaria in particular though! 🤤🌵

Yoooo the horizontal bands/striations you mentioned (~12 min mark) on the Agave are from water build up in the crown and leaving marks/removing the farina from extended periods of not drying.

some of the valleys have intense numbers of cactus and other species, then cross a small range of hills and the flora is a lot less and drier. This desert is a wonderful place to explore, late may is when the rains have stopped and everything is lush and blooming.
