You don't have to be Chinese to understand the level of tenacity, hard work and true adventure of these Chinese workers. I have seen their contribution in almost every country I have lived in. It really is astounding how they jumped into the unknown as they have. They have nothing but total respect from me.

I bet those death numbers are WAY lower than what it actually was. I’m sure many more Chinese died, sad, but we must honor the work they put in to help build up this nation! Spectacular work.

Every ethnicity has these stories, most everyone coming here dealt with these conditions. Blacks, Chinese, as well as Europeans, especially the Irish dealt with this. Most found a way to get past it.

Wow that was a feat in itself. Building all that back in the "old" days. Then with poor diet low wages. Good gosh. Bless those Chinese workers. They endured alot and kept going. Very tenacious men they were. 😀👍🕔🕔🕔

This woman is incorrect in saying that mention of Chinese laborers has been erased from history - that's simply not true. Author and HIstorian Stephen E. Ambrose wrote an outstanding book about the men who built the Transcontinental Railroad called "Nothing Like It In The World." She is remiss for being unfamiliar with this book, seeing as how she claims to be an Archaeologist and a Historian. Mr. Ambrose dedicated many sections in the book to telling about the Chinese people who came to the United States to get work to earn money because they could be paid more here and then return to their homeland where the money they earned here would go a lot further. From the book: The financiers who paid for all the supplies and the salaries of the laborers, praised the Chinese for their work ethic, reliability, and ingenuity; and came to pay the Chinese laborers more than the other laborers - their salary was high for the time. For example, Chinese laborer named Lee Chew traveled from Hong Kong to San Francisco around 1860 where he was hired to work on the railroad. He worked there for three years and saved enough money to return home to open his own laundry. Another Chinese man returned back to their village from USA; bought land as large as four city blocks and made a paradise on it. Lee Chew said of the man, "He had gone away from our village as a poor boy, then returned with unlimited wealth, made in America." And, she claims they were erased from history? Another iniquity in this video - does she really believe the man showed her an authentic place that was used to cook food back in 1860?? As well, I was of the understanding that the tunnels were made for the purpose of laying the track for the trains - why is this one not being used for that? I'm calling foul on this whole presentation.

In a book is not the same as recognized by a nation's keepers and teachers of history. Ignorance is entrenched in our history as is racism.

While undoubtedly the work of giants, I'd rephrase the reasoning behind their endeavors: they didn't work there because they wanted to be gloryfied or leave some epic structure behind. They worked there, because they 1) didn't have any money to return home, 2) probably had a family to take care of, and 3) had to work somewhere and there were no jobs Americans were willing to give them, outside this gig. Eventually it probably became well known as hard, but stable and reasonably well paid work, hence why others were willing to come as well.

This is more about asian indentured slavery not giants. Many asian miners were better at panning and mining and did very well in Canada.

> Chief_Chingasos Historian Stephen E. Ambrose, author of about 25 books, wrote an outstanding book about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869 and the men who did it, titled "Nothing Like It In The World." He dedicated many parts of it to the Chinese people who came to the United States to get work to earn money because they could be paid more here and then return to their homeland where the money they earned here would go a lot further. Lee Chew said of the man, "He had gone away from our village as a poor boy, then returned with unlimited wealth, made in America." Chief Chingasos - if you obtain this book and read it, you will learn that they were not exploited or oppressed in the name of the United States of America, but rather, they were paid better than anyone else working on the railroad for the work they did - and they were able to return home with the money they made in America that enabled them to prosper in their homeland. My hope is that you read this book to enable you to develop a different perspective on your opinion of what was accomplished in the United States by people who came here from other nations to earn a better living than they could in their homeland. I mean you no disrespect; but I am compelled to stand up for my own homeland, the USA.
