Used Calimoto yesterday for the first time and it provided the best day I've had in years, it's lightyears ahead of the likes of Waze. One thing I'd like though is to pick the fastest route home, I used Waze for this in the end but it'd be great if Calimoto had something similar. Thanks for the review, this vid is the reason I gave it a shot, I will be paying for premium :)

On my GS I use this cheap Mount from Amazon, which just clips into the satnav cradle and even powers your phone off the bike. Hands down best solution currently available. amzn.to/3mnbBJU When I’m not on the tractor I use the Ultimateaddons phone case for my phone with their Helix strap Mount ultimateaddons.com/collections/attachment/products/ultimateaddons-helix-locking-strap-bike-attachment-21-40mm The Helix strap connects to any bike plus it has enough ‘give’ in it that it doesn’t cause any vibration issues with your phone’s camera. I’ve tried other mounting solutions, either myself personally or through close friends, and they’ve all caused issues. If you go for the Helix strap, use code TEAPOTONE10 for 10% off the UA range 👍

Great review. Think I'll give Calimoto a chance. It does sound as if you have to launch the app every time you go on a trip. It would be great if they added a feature like Bluetooth connection, so when I turn on my Cardo Packtalk, it will start logging my position (just like the Fuelio app). I'll be sending a pm for a code on Facebook. Driving is a bit hard right now. My biceps almost got torn when my XJ900S wanted to lay down back in March. Great channel. Been using this for a couple of months and generally it's been great and it's pretty simple to use and finds some interesting routes and road if I'm just out for a bimble. It did try to send me through a 2 foot deep river crossing (unsuitable for motor vehicles road) on a recent trip to Norfolk, just 10 mins after I'd been extolling it's prowess over my mates £350 bike satnav .. so 9/10, losing a point for embarrassing me 😂

I completely agree that this is by far the best satnav for bikes, especially for the round trip mode. Unfortunately I live bang in the centre of England and so had to choose one half of the country as my free map (I chose Northern half), and consequently many routes which stray into the Southern half are unavailable to me. I did ask Calimoto if they could add a Central region option as the free map, but no luck. If you use it all the time, then £49pa is reasonable I suppose, but for the casual user it's rather steep I think. No complaint as to functionality though.

As a dye in the wool life long satnav fan-boy, I'd try'd and dismissed every navigation app until I gave this one a go after hearing nothing but good things about it. I don't use a satnav anymore, infact I've not even fitted it too my new bike, its almost a joke how easy it is to plan a route or multi day trip, sort it out on your laptop, so no more messing about with a tiny screen and fat fingers, and boom, its on your phone. And yes, its well worth getting the paid upgrade, the off line mapping will help save you some data but more importantly comes in if, like me, you find yourself out in the sticks where phone coverage can be a bit hit n miss.

Just discovered Calimoto after doing a lot of research to improve ride planning for the Garmin Zumo XT. Makes it really easy to do. I’m trialling the free version. I’d like to go premium or even to just purchase the map package. Euro to Australian $ conversion is terrible at present so it makes it rather exxy. Not sure if you can compare it to buying a Garmin or whatever. With that you get a dedicated bike nav with free map updates. But then you can also use an old phone with Google maps and a Quadlock mount, I guess. In any case, Calimoto makes ride planning so much easier than that abomination called Garmin Basecamp, that’s for sure. Anyway, thanks for the videos. Well done.

Hi Bruce, informative video on Calimoto. Hoping to do a Central Asian trip in 2022. Do you think Calimoto is a good substitute to Garmin? Your thoughts please?
@teapotone
@teapotone 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nazar, Calimoto works off OpenSource mapping, so often the maps aren’t as updated or detailed as the likes of google etc - but I used OpenSource maps for lots of my RTW trip without issue. Personally I wouldn’t bother with any satnav these days as your phone does a better job. HOWEVER - you will need to make sure your phone is unlocked and allows the use of ANY SIM card. That way you can buy a local SIM card in whatever country you arrive in, pop it in your phone and you then use data at that local rate (which is almost always a LOT cheaper than using your own country’s sim in a foreign land). You can set Calimoto to offline mode, that way it’s not relying on any date signal, but you’ll have to download the relevant map before you go offline. Also make sure you can power your phone either off the bike or from a battery pack. Calimoto drains my iPhone 11 Pro battery flat in about an hour and a half so I power it off the bike or an abler power pack 👍

Hi Richard, If you’ve got a BMW that has the satnav cradle then I’d recommend this cheap little Mount I use from Amazon. amzn.to/3mnbBJU It snaps straight into the Nav cradle and even powers your phone off the bike too. I’ve used it for thousands and thousands of miles on my GS and had no issues. For other bikes I use the Ultimateaddons Helix strap Mount and the phone case for my phone. The Helix strap has sufficient flexibility to not only attach to any bike, but it’s also flexible enough to not cause any camera issues through vibration. ultimateaddons.com/collections/attachment/products/ultimateaddons-helix-locking-strap-bike-attachment-21-40mm Use code TEAPOTONE10 for 10% off Ultimateaddons products 👍

@teapotone
@teapotone 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they should be, but if you have it set to the Super Twisty option it can take you down some really ‘rural’ roads that may not have been used in a long time! I pretty much never use the super twisty option because of that. It works off OpenSource mapping - not the google mapping structure most main satnav’s do - hence why there’s no speed or traffic information available. They hope that as the user base grows and finances increase, they can invest into the google mapping infrastructure and these facilities will become available

@teapotone

Yep, it’s not bad on postcodes, but actual street addresses are a bit hit and miss at times. I much prefer to find the address on google, then use the map on calimoto to zoom in and find the place, drop a pin and set as destination. Bit of a longer work around though 👍

After watching your video I decided to give it a go. The planning is great but the maps are pathetic. Trying to plan a trip around the Brecon Beacons is nearly impossible as so many great B roads are not on the maps. For £49 I would expected a hell of alot better.

Hey brother, I love the app and have used the free version for a while. I haven’t bought the premium yet because it seems to play hell with my Cardo pack-talk. It screws up the volume on the music and sometimes just locks it up. The new Cardo update seems to have helped a little but it still does it about half the time. Have you had any problems or have any suggestions?

I really like Calimoto and use it loads, but I don’t think they have the balance between “freemium” and paid versions right. I’ve tried the paid version and wasn’t all that interested in all of the additional features. Freemium works really well and has great functionality, so I’ve not a great incentive to pay the premium. If it was £10-£15 a year then I’d be happy to pay. Trouble is, if they downgraded freemium to encourage me to spend £45 then I’d stop using it. Cheaper with a few more bells and whistles then I think they’d make more money. I absolutely love that it tracks where you’ve been! I’m trying to colour in Bournemouth and Poole!

Hello, I live in the UK, upgraded to the premium, with a view to planning routes in Europe. Put in Bonn as a Start point Koblenz as the End, but the App says "can't calculate through countries with left and right hand traffic? Download the off line map as well, no joy. Any suggestions?
@teapotone

Hi, aye it’s just because calimoto can’t plot a route between countries where you drive/ride on different sides of the road. Just plot your route to Dover or whatever UK port your leaving from, then plot another route for the European side, so from Calais onwards for example 👍

I find at roundabouts it might say exit 3 but if you actually count the exit it is quite often wrong. Have you find this
@teapotone
@teapotone 2 жыл бұрын
No - if you check the main junction board before a roundabout and look at the sign for the roundabout, if you count how many options there are displayed, you’ll find that Calimoto is correct. Often there will be an ‘exit’ on the roundabout that doesn’t actually go anywhere, it’s just a dead end into a field or lay-by etc, but Calimoto will count this as an option. It’s always best to have your phone on display if you can, then you can see on the map where to exit.👍

I use the almost exclusively for following the local IAM Sunday rides. However I have asked Calimoto if they could allow to preset all the sections' twistiness at the start as otherwise Calimoto gets a bit "inventive" with the route and changes it from the desired IAM route.

Yeah I’ve found that when you import any routes into Calimoto, you need to make sure each section between waypoints is set to ‘no motorway’ - otherwise it will invent its own route between the points 👍

It takes me down roads that are absolutely awful, it takes me down roads that are almost single track roads that are covered down the center In mud etc of the road. I asked them to put a button in the app that blacklists certain roads when you ride them so it doesn't take you down that road again all I would have to do is tap the button and it would blacklist that specific road i had just ridden.I think this would be extremely useful.
