@@TheNomad94 There are 7 heavenly moving objects visible to the naked eye, sun, moon, and five planets. Pagans attributed a major god to each. Each of our days in the week is named after one of these pagan deities, most of them from Norse mythology. NOT one given a biblical name. PS - the months are mostly named after Roman gods (Janus), two emperors (Julius and Augustus Caesar), or a number in Latin. Again not biblical.

@MossyMozart
@MossyMozart 2 ай бұрын
I cannot abide the short tempers. Only one time, when I was occupied and Mr Dillahunty came on accidently, did I hear him be kind. A theist woman whose beloved relative had died called to ask if he thought she could speak with their spirit. She was in pain and he gently got her to realize that it wasn't possible, but she could embrace all her memories for comfort. Wow! He had turned over a new leaf, so I tuned in again only to find him snarling at a caller again. No more.
@LeviathanArts
@LeviathanArts Жыл бұрын
1:14:17 I love that you muted him and changed his name to Dunning-Kruger. In the future, when he inevitably calls back, COMT would be a great response to his “instinct” questions. It is know as the “worrier or warrior” gene, because alterations in the gene lead to a phenotype of either being more aggressive or more prone to anxiety. Pretty sure those qualify as “information” with behaviors.
@LeviathanArts
@LeviathanArts Жыл бұрын
Edit: I also should add that “instincts” and “behavior” can also be greatly influenced by structure. Look at Michael Phelps, as an example. I’ve met him in person and, holy shit, his arms are looooong. He’s “built” to swim; but if you were to throw him on a cross country race, he’s not gonna do well. Then you have those like the Mountain, who may have higher testosterone or less myostatin, or any other number of factors, but even if he were to train for a marathon in his youth, his body is still going to be more geared towards high weights. So it’s not that they were “created” for those activities, but with the equipment they randomly developed, they leaned towards activities they were innately better at. Hormone balance, muscle fiber type ratio, bone density, COMT…all of these are hereditary factors that influence your ability to do stuff, which in turn influences your behavior.

Expanding on my superchat to part of Yum's call, 2, 4, 6, 8 isn't enough to conclude that 10 is the next number. This is only true if f(n) = the positive even numbers. It turns out, if f(1) = 2 and f(n) = the nth prime + 1, for n > 1, this will produce f(5) = 12 and f(6) = 14. Also, if n starts at 0 and f(4) is indeed 12, then the following polynomial can be obtained using Newton's Finite Difference method: f(n) = [2n(n-1)(n-2)(n-3)] / 24 + 2n + 2 and f(5) = 22 as predicted by this polynomial. The Finite Difference method can go on the create an infinite amount of sequences that start with 2, 4, 6, 8.

I also love it when theists call in and say something like “I think I’m a pretty reasonable and skeptical person.” But then they proceed to tell you the most unreasonable and illogical things that they could possibly believe.

I love how Forrest approached 7 Day Cycle guy. He didn't let him get on the Bible BS, and showed just how uneducated the man is.

Love love love-ity love love these two! I super look forward to Erika/Forrest podcasts as The Line stacks up patreons. I wouldn't mind seeing these two get their own biology-themed The Line show. The overall humanist tie-in seems straightforward to me, and I've even got some title suggestions for ya Jimmy: Life on The Line (or even just Life Line) Life, Live Real-Time Evolution Bio-Line (okay weak I know) I can dream, right?

I’m not sure why we aren’t mentioning a name, as the person in question posted it to their KZbin channel, but I have the utmost respect for the “no longer vegan” individual and thought these two (and Jimmy) handled it perfectly. Well done everyone.

Idk, Jimmy seemed quite combative and accusatory, and nothing I've seen indicates that this ex-vegan deserves that.

1:53:15 that was a really nice and complete answer you two gave about the question of morality. I wish most theist would hear that answer, that nails down why I hate so much when theists think themselves superiority to other animals.

OK, now I've watched the whole thing. :) Regarding the issue of theists/creationists not calling in: I've been watching call-in shows for a looooooong time now, and y'all are correct that these people don't call in because 1) They don't like direct interpersonal confrontation -- most people don't, after all -- and would rather spew their nonsense in chat or comments and 2) They do not want to know the truth and do not care if their beliefs are false. They want to make believe. I'd estimate that 96% of those who do call in just want to preach, and they will never have an honest conversation because they CAN'T do so. So, while it can be fun to listen to such people flounder and be ridiculous, it honestly gets boring after a while because it's the same "arguments," all the time, and usually from the same small batch of people. On a very rare occasion you'll get a new and actually honest theist/creationist caller, but they are few and very far between. I know that The Line's "thing" is call-in shows but, frankly, I think the call-in aspect is much less valuable than the educational aspect of the show, equipping atheists/skeptics with better arguments and information to use when interacting with other people. IMO, that educational value is derived more from the questions that come in via superchats and the discussion between the hosts that they generate than from the calls. I certainly enjoy the superchat part more. I dunno, maybe that's an unpopular opinion, but it's the one I have.

At age 32, I have learned for the literal first time right this very second, that the reason Isaac Newton invented Integral and Differential calculus was to find mathematics to explain the orbits of the planets, which is so incredibly coo!! IF LITERALLY ANYONE BEFORE NOW had explained that to me I would have 1000% more interested in calculus!

I've seen faucets move on their own before. Faucets are valves and valves are kept shut by friction. Depending on the type of valve differential pressure across the valve can actually cause the valve to open on its own if the coefficient of friction is low which for some valves, especially older ones, can happen.

I love how Forrest mentions Sapolsky on each and every show. He's not only a great scientist but also an amazing person. Each time he mentions his name, I always remember his book "A Primate's Memoir". If you love Sapolsky as much as I and Forrest do, and haven't read that book yet, please do.
