You can feel how games used to make maps from a different intention. COD maps and even maps in other shooters started becoming so data driven. This started in Black Ops when the devs would get feedback to where players died, where people played too much or too little, and so on. I get the impression that had an impact on how maps are created for years now. This happened even with Rainbow Six Siege where the maps and changes to maps started feeling too focused on competitive play, balance, visibility, etc. over making a map that had personality.

OG MW2 has a very distinct style that MWIII isn't trying to follow. It objectively looks better than OG MW2 when it comes to fidelity and technical prowess, but when it comes to things like lighting and style i'd say it's more subjective. I personally like most of the MWIII version of the maps more since I always disliked the muted colors of the OG Modern Warfare games, and I like that there is an effort to improve visibility for the most part. Maps like Favela, Estate, Skidrow, Scrapyard, and Wasteland in particular really stand out to me as being a lot better in MWIII than MW2. I think maps llike Highrise, Sub base, Invasion, Terminal, and Derail are better in the original version though as I don't like some of the changes they made. While I strongly prefer better visibility, I do think they might have gone a little too far on those maps to the point where they look unfinished.
@StolenJoker84 Жыл бұрын
I agree. They could have cleaned up the look, making the maps more colorful, vibrant, and modern, without the drastic sterilization. We have the technology to make Rust (for example) to look more realistic, but instead they chose to clean up.
@scottjs520711 ай бұрын
They went a little too far with the added color... like it makes me feel cross eyed just looking at a ton of the maps and the backgrounds feel unfocused on the actual map as well, making it difficult for me to focus on the maps I knew so well in the original I could reliably guess fire and get kills through walls at times. MW22 had just enough color and it was intrusive... that game had plenty of other problems leading to me dropping it, but it didn't actively hurt to stare at it for me.

This video has convinced me that talent with art design among modern AAA game devs has been lost with the passage of time. These modern games, yeah they've got higher detail and higher resolutions, but there's just *so much* of it that it's just blends together and ironically seems flatter than an older game from 2009. Then you get to the *lighting*, and wow, these modern games just seems flat out worse pretty much all the time. Old games knew the importance of lighting and often used it to hide their shortcomings, and I just can't help but notice lighting solutions in modern games have this sterile, washed-out look to them even when the colors are more vibrant. All these modern games with realistic visuals and modern graphics really just seem to brute force their way into having a game look technologically impressive, but that's their entire crutch because it's all done without any nuance or finer care to visual presentation.

@dillanhawkins543011 ай бұрын
This is one of the biggest things for me. The sound quality as you stated has definitely improved - but it is missing certain elements that gave the maps their "atmosphere". The one's that stuck out the most to me are the same ones you mentioned. The OG Favela had sounds that truly made it sound like you were inside of a Favela - the distant chatter from children/people, dogs barking, and horns honking. The OG Derail had that strong bitterly cold whipping/whistling wind sound that made you feel like you were somewhere very cold. The OG High Rise sounded like you were very high up in a city and the wind was very strong. Underpass is another example though a little different - the sound still seems to be pretty on point there but it just doesn't feel like I am in a bad thunderstorm as much - I think it's the lack of dark clouds in the sky and the overall brighter map in general. Also, can we just say the FOOTSTEPS in MW3 ARE TOO LOUD for you to hear anything anyway. He needed to do this with the covert sneakers on to make it comparable really.

Just wanted to mention, I think it would look a lot better if you dropped the in game sensitivity way down or used a lower dpi for the panning shots in the original game, idk if its just me being an aiming nerd but the jittery mouse movements irk me as it looks low framerate and i just think it would improve the video quality. It's a wonderful comparison though as i grew up on and love the old maps but they did a really good job bringing them back and i even prefer a few of the newer ones

The OG maps made you feel like you were dropped into a warzone (the irony) where you felt as though every win and loss mattered in the universe IW built. This time around, you feel like you’re dropped into an arena where every sight line and channel is constructed for balancing and to stop whiny streamers complaining about fairness. There was nothing better than getting dropping a nade into a campers sniping nest, or, even camping there yourself! Now it’s all run, gun, slide cancel, meta weapons this and meta weapons that. The spirit has gone, and it’s been replaced by hardcore sweats who spend thousands of dollars on micro-transactions. It’s sad.

The one thing that they could've done was match the atmosphere of the old maps. They actually made you feel like you were there in my opinion. Instead they decided to go with the ever growing competitive feel that modern games are going now. No more scattered props making it feel messy and left abandoned in a hurry but instead left neatly on the side giving you arguably better maneuvering at the cost of not making it feel like a real place. It's a shame that they choose competitiveness over fun.

It seems like they removed a lot of atmospheric things in exchange for better gameplay and balancing. Like removing fog, dust, snow, trees, rubble, luggage etc etc. idk how I feel about this. I feel like one thing that made these maps cool was having to fight with the environment and the situations they pose in a fight. Regardless I’ve been playing a lot of the game and enjoying it. Also I need to edit this in after reading other comments. These are not ARTISTIC choices or them trying to look more realistic or whatever, it is very clear these were altered for balancing purposes. Like it or not a lot of game companies now try to focus more on how they play rather then how they look.

Can we all take a moment to respect the fact that modern CoD games legit look insanely good for how well they perform in terms of framerate? There are lots of spots that can look photorealistic whilst retaining 120+FPS on average PC hardware

The last 2 COD games I purchased and played were MW2 and MW2. I really felt like MW2 2 was worth my money because of the new maps and the length of time since I had last played a COD game, even though it was devoid of many of the extremally basic features of the older games I played back in '07-'09. I simply cannot believe that there are COD fans who have paid for an entire "new" game every single year in all of those years that I took a break. This series really needs to settle on having one launcher with all the content and offer either a monthly subscription, or a $40 a year price tag. Only reasons I can think of that make them stick to this plan is 1.) consoles and 2.) the fact that so many throw their money at them year after year. All that being said this game is the nostalgia trip I was looking for in last years release so it's downloading as we speak 🤣

I agree 100%. Some remakes are better than others but newer cod maps have gone downhill drastically.

i think he making the comparsin about how thje old maps maybe less visually (Since out dated hard ware) but the maps lack soul and ambience they dont feel like a war was there like rust its barely rusty theres not blood splatters in the map theres no officies thats been turn up from people leaving in panic aswell as militery bombs on those officies alot of thje old games(maps) had a way better evnoirment then the new games

The best way I can describe the new designs is sterilized color vomit. Everything feels too empty, but also the clashing colors they use actually gives me a headache. It's amazing how visibility being worse on some maps were an active design element and I miss that so much. Thermals actually had a use on Sub Base and underpass since things blended so much, and it gave those maps drastically different ways to approach wide open areas.

Do have to give props to Sledge for bringing back the feel of OG COD though, it's not 100% there but they've definitely steered the game in the right direction.

The cutbacks for a competitive play style are evident, even though they're really not that necessary. Like it's funny how the maps with the most extreme weather now have the most visibility. The way they completely abstained from using any type of fog or haze and cut back on sand, snow and rain in Afghan, Sub base and Underpass respectively is hilarious. Even maps with large environments like Favela lack any distant haze/fog to sell the size and the distance of the enviornment. Also the original MW2 had a much more atmospheric soundscape, the way they filled the soundscape with white noise makes the environment feel much more real and alive. Even though from a technical standpoint MWIII is better: it sounds high quality, it's richer and more natural/ has more tonality, there's a much improved sense of distance and direction, the soundscape sounds comparitavely quiet and kind of dead. In the strive to have a very neutral and competitive design, the art style has been neutered and the enviornments feel much less alive and lived in despite all the technical improvements we've had over the years. They did strike a decent balance, but it really is unnecessary at times.

That game was a peak and way ahead of its time. Maps, kill-streaks, battle chatters, callouts, winning themes, spawn themes and the like. How did they manage to create such a great game 15 years ago, and they cannot make a single COD near that game? No remake would give me the vibe to play again. They should release the same game once more not even changing the place of those bottles on Afghan.

Wonder if you'll make a DIrect Comparison videos for the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games. I've never seen you made a single video for them and it would be nice to see a comparison between one or two.. Especially Gaiden vs 7 or 6 or the Older games.

im glad they chose the route to not do the actual MW2 name on this one , to keep the original one as it should , instead they used MW3s name and pretty much gave us a re imagined version of MW2, thats why all the irepws iw4x launchers were shut down to give an opportunity to this game, i love it

I am new to the game and love the new maps. I do think the new maps do look like it lacks the state of war and story telling, but I love the quality of the maps and sounds much better. They just need to bring more story into the maps and it would be golden.

Objectively the MW3 remasters are better but the thing that the old MW2 maps had that was better was the environmental effects. For example Underpass had the foggy rain atmosphere the map which gave it a more of eerie vibe to it.

No matter how much they improve it or how many graphics and realism they add, the classics are classics and convey that feeling in each map along with its atmosphere and gameplay
