This is my opinion. But when HALO Combat Evolved got remastered, it was actually good. This looks pretty much the same to the original with tiny graphic improvements. It is still a good game nonetheless, but I don't really see the point of remastering it, since the original COD4 had a classic feel to it.

For the close up shots of faces, the newer looks better, but in most of the shots, original looks better. It doesn't have all that cinematic feel to it, and the Lighting looks more realistic and crisp. Basically the original looks more sharp and defined than the newer that gets by with blurring techniques. Like with Zakheav's close up, he looks like shit with the polygons, bit the background looks detailed as fuck, but in the newer, the background looks dull and bad with the depth of field. pros and cons. Original: -Pros: No blurring, lighting, models look crisp and defined at a normal distance, lighting interacts with models nicely giving it a more defined look, can't beat the classics. -Cons: Polygons highly noticeable, close ups look bad, foliage looks good at a distance but closeup is just scrambled images of IRL foliage. Newer: -Pros: Graphics updated, closeups look better, Rain interacts with Models and environments nicely -Cons: Too much blurring, lighting is pretty bad in many areas, Scenery is damaged by Depth of Field, Models don't look defined from a distance, foliage isn't an improvement, in fact it might be worst as they didn't render images to use as Foliage Textures. Here are references so you see what I am talking about: 00:35 This is where the new one uses depth of field to its advantage. With Depth of field, plus the cigar smoke, most of the ship is covered. The newer has lights added into the ship to add detail hidden by DoF. Rain interacts with the models, plus the lighting give it a more advanced look than the original. The original, however, has a different approach. No DoF, so the bottom of the ship looks unnatural and just pasted on. However, with it's exaggerated use of lightning, it makes everything pop out more. The ship crates and models have a horror feel to it, and makes everything look bright, as expected in a light scarce, open environment. The models aren't affected by rain, so it doesn't look as realistic, but because of that, the rope, soldiers, and even cigar are more defined. 1:00 One of the closeups compared. The background in the original isn't affected by DoF, making it more detailed than the newer. The original model of Zakheav looks fake and plastic. The lighting works good here for the background, but the Model doesn't help. But the newer one has different problems. Although it might look more detailed, the poor lighting on it makes it look dull and flat. look at the nose, and you'll see what I mean. Where the original looked plastic and fake, it at least had depth to it. The newer looks like an unfinished painting that got dropped at the shading process. 1:44: Soldiers in the original are much more detailed with the lighting making them look defined. The wall behind them uses a brick texture that, combined with the lighting, makes it look like it is 3d, when it is actually a flat image. Door had more detail. In the newer, the soldiers look bland and dull as their edges look blurred. The lighting looks like it was done over with Airbrush, giving it a flat, dull look. Wall is blank with a few signs of damage to give it the illusion of detail, and the door is similar to the original, but not as defined. There is a lot more, but it's up for you to decide.

Lol the lighting has had a major improvement. In case you havent noticed, natural light in real life is quite the opposite of sharp. Shadows are quite often really soft, rarely are they ever hard and dark. The original lighting was just off. And nice depth of field ISNT a bad thing when used in the right areas to do what its meant to, i.e in cutscenes. Its a tool that adds focus, and a realistic effect if its being seen through any sort of lens. Look at the new doom for example, it took advantage of DOF really well

Cameron Teeple There are soft and hard shadows, the most common you'll find is hard shadows. soft shadows are seen in objects such as leaves, or any translucent object. Hard shadows with the sun as a light source is not something you'll see very often. Soft Shadows are an effect recreated through flashlights for an impactful image. Soft Shadows render more easily than Hard shadows because it can easily be recreated through cheap methods such as fade, but the original Cod4, despite it's technology, still went on to make it. Which is why GTA 5 was not able to add it into the game until PC as an option. So already, Cod4 is using features superior than the new one. DoF is existant in real life, but the original Cod4 decided to only add it when ADSing weapons, as they wanted to showcase the power of the new technology. They wanted to show off how everything looked in comparison to the CoDs before it. Cities were very hard to model for PS2 and XBOX, and buildings could only be made if they were simple 3d models with images on the sides. But CoD 4 went full balls to the wall with the objective to show off. The indents in walls, brick texture, everything was made with that purpose. CoD 4 had the technology to use DoF, as it's pretty simple to code compared to other visual effects in the game. Using it in the new CoD 4 isn't really revolutionary, and if they cut back on it, it would be really great on their part to show off the background and improvements made. The new CoD 4 is nothing more than a bribe to buying Infinite Warfare. They use cheap visual effects to take the easy was around, making the newer version much, much less impressive than the older one.

TheDougieFresh I wouldn't call a massive increase in polys and much improved materials "cheap visual effects", it does its job as a remaster. Although the visuals are a bit generic relative to today's standards, its still heaps better than the original. They went for a more accurate lighting approach in this one, just because rendering soft shadows is less intensive, that doesn't deny the fact that it is just more accurate. Hard Shadows don't exist in the real world, and soft shadows just makes more sense. And yes, DOF was available at the time, in its most primitive form, to add focus to the point of interest (i.e. Aiming Down Sights), but the remaster has used DOF for more than a game play mechanic, and included it as a cinematic tool to use, in what we've only seen in cut scenes. But I will agree that the idea of having to buy the game with Infinite Warfare is extremely anti-consumer.

Cameron Teeple Soft shadows in every entity isn't realistic. It's a cheap and easy way to add visuals into a game, which is why it was used in the original GTA 5, and changed to Hard Shadows in the upgraded versions of the game. If you go out in the middle of the day, you will rarely see soft shadows unless it's from leaves, or wire fences, other than that, the shadows are hard. The purpose of the game was to make it look as good as possible, but in doing so, a lot of visuals the original did better. A brick wall texture in the original where it would actually pop out, is reduced to a mere flat wall with a crack in it, and the door looks flat in the remake, compared to the original. The remake is simply to upgrade the models, not the scenery, and this video proves that.

It just looks that way because the lighting is much more, idk, distributed? Like, it's basically everywhere so there isn't as much as a lighting/shadowy effect as the original, and the wall went from being brick to being a more flat, mud or plastery kinda surface, which makes it look like it is missing a bit more detail than it really is, but upon closer inspection of the individual textures and comparing them, especially things like the M4's and the soldier's equipment, you'll see where the upgrades were made for sure.

I'm not so sure about the door breach comparison. The chipped wall textures in the remaster look fantastic, but they'll need to spread those across the whole wall, not just the edge. If they do that properly, it'll definitely look better than the repetitive brick texture which lacks character

Well you can't really compare them because one is pretty much a decade old. If you take the technology available at the year of their makings into account, the original would be the winner in a landslide. ^some of those people who responded to you have no idea how fucking bad ass cod4 looked for its era. It was a game changer and the graphics were sexy as hell. COD 4 graphics aren't that off from modern game graphics, it's pretty much playing a game on low settings, but is fun as hell to play and has a rich story. I'm really saddened at the route cod has taken ever since. Now the series is pretty much just a money milking machine. BO3 campaign doesn't even continue from the last Black Ops. Black Ops 1 was my favorite game besides cod4. I miss good cod storytelling :(

I don't - It doesn't help the picture from the trailer is out of focus or blurry. However when I look at both the images, the original I can definitely tell it's a video game the remastered not so much. I also can tell the other has more advanced atmosphere effects going on the remastered version. It is also a still, but when you see the final product in motion I think the difference will be quite clear. Not to mention, the remastered game is still a work in progress.

The Halo 2 MC Collection's cutscenes were entirely redone by Blur Studio, and they are incredible at hyper-true-to-life realistic effects, go check out the Blur Studio Animation reel or watch their Star Wars Old Republic trailers to see. The CoD 4 remaster is being done by Activision's Raven Software, and their focus will be different. Their focus for this game is of course on gameplay graphics, which in this case are going to be the same as cutscene graphics because CoD 4's cutscenes were all rendered in-engine in real time, not pre-rendered like the gorgeous Halo 2 remastered cutscenes. That's why you never had that "why do the cutscenes look so much better than when I'm playing?" feeling from Cod 4

Its started from the first CoD in 2003 and they picked the idtech3 engine from the 90s. And they just continued with it modifying and upgrading the same thing over and over again. COD 4 is admired because of its compelling story and great characters. From what I've seen so far, it seems that the remaster is trying to tell the story with a more cinematic feel, hence the blurring of backgrounds and huge increase of environmental effects like smoke and haze. The detail added to the jetty at 1:17 (posts going into the water) are the sort of additions we'll see plenty of. Also, you must be blind if you can't tell the difference in Zakhaev's face at 1:02 :P

That is the problem with trailers. They are too deceiving and always look better than the actual games. it's called Pre-Baked cinematics when it comes to trailers. I do believe though the call of duty 4 remaster trailer is legitimate gameplay graphics but it is too shiny in my opinion to be considered realistic looking.

Same mw2 disappointed me so badly that they've made me to stop buying CoD games and went back to CoD 4,WaW was awesome but the rest felt all the same even the futuristic ones and I had the chance to play all the newer releases luckily I haven't bought them I would have felt scammed by the developers.Look at IW how few weapons there are and the DLCs...I know Battlefield fans who say Battlefield DLcs are a scamm because they're releasing half game and I don't see it like that 100%(They exist since BF1942 and are jsut expansions now they feel like because almost everygame developer is doing it they feel also scammed by BF developers, must admit BF premium at the price of 50 is also a bit too much It's like the price of the game) If we look at COD DLCs these are a real scamm

Stop with this bs in the comments, guys. The Remastered version looks way better than the original in every screenshot. With COD4 we actually reached the point that not only EACH new COD has to be worse than it, but even a Remastered must be considered shit just because of some nostalgic idiots.
