I love how World at War pulled no punches. The final moments of a war are often its most brutal. Frustrated soldiers, tired after years of hard fighting would frequently visit their wrath and fury on their enemy's final stronghold. Killing enemy combatants and non-combatants alike. WaW really presents the fall of Berlin as a modern day fall of Troy or fall of Carthage, and I absolutely love it

The best part about this game compared to other WW2 shooters was that it didn’t paint the Allies as heroes. Even though they fought a greater evil, they weren’t exempt of being consumed by hatred and violence war brings upon men.

Well, that actually only happens with the soviets. In this campaign Americans are pictured as good people and soldiers. The hardest thing you get to see is how they burn up japanese soldiers with the flamethrower, but at no point they are shown as sadistic, they even get to be seen as heroes with that final speech of MacArthur. Meanwhile, all of Chernov's character is made as to put on the table all of what the reds are doing badly. But that's one of the reasons why soviet campaign in WaW is more memorable, they try to show you the truth behind war

In fact Polonsky was very sadistic that he shouted at the Japanese animals for the death of Roebuck.

It's just a reused asset that allowed for the devs to add something really nice into the game at little cost. Irl Soviet tanks didn't really have mounted MGs, as it would have slowed down production at a point where every tank was needed. However quite a few models did have them, with a 12.7 machine gun, a Soviet 50 cal. These were mostly the heavier tanks such as the IS2 and ISU series of tank destroyers and assault guns. Which were very common in the battle of Berlin.
