As a software engineer who has developed genetic algorithms for optimization I can see a massive potential here for customization. To your point about delivery specific COG delivery and such it should be possible to take into account. I can imagine various levels of customization, the first level being general optimized for performance with a standard delivery, another level optimized for ranges of deliveries ( path, AOA, strike location), and finally for big $$ full optimization for your personal numbers where you provide a measured data set of your actual swing and they optimize a face just for you! Really could be a whole new world of fitting and customization.

Won't be long before they price the average Joe out the market for brand new equipment it's about time that most golfer stick with what they have for another year then maybe sales will fall and then make the manufacturer have a rethink on price driver price has doubled in the last 4 year I would think most people's disposal income has not doubled in that time and the marketing every year is hilarious

Another great video. I really enjoy the two of you together. About the Epic and Rouge confusion, Callaway shared last year that Rouge was it's own line. There is the Epic Line and the Rouge Line of drivers. I'm not sure I understand the confusion. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new Rouge driver next season. Mizuno has a JPX line and an MP line, I don't see a difference. Thanks for all of the time and hard work spent in creating the content for us.

Mark, I love all your videos, but I watch you for golf and not math. 4mm lateral and 3mm vertical is not 7mm from the origin point, which you're using as the center. Pythagorean theorem tells us that the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of squares of the lengths of other two sides of the right-angled triangle. It other words, it's 5mm away and not 7 mm. Again, love the video's, keep up the great work!

We don't need a new driver every year but the companies do. They are in a competitive environment in which new club releases serve to keep them relevant. Why do car companies release new cars every year, or singers new albums, or coke make a coke ZERO. Okay, admittedly that last entry doesn't support my point but you get it. The important thing is to keep your head while others are losing theirs. When I update my driver and I do so every eight to ten years, I simply buy last years latest and greatest model. My last purchase, made in spring of 2018, was a used TM M2 from 2016. Improved my distance by about ten yards and appears to be more forgiving plus I like its sound. I updated my whole bag in 2018, here is the breakdown: 2016 TM Rsi1 irons 437.99 M2 Driver 207.98 M2 3 wood 110.48 M2 5 wood 178 Putter 172 5 hybrid 100.48 2 headcovers 25.72 Clubs sold -292.35 Total out-of-pocket 940.3 I'm playing off a 20.7 handicap so clearly, my money needs to go towards physical fitness and lessons.

Mark, if you have 10 mm high and 20 mm towards the toe, it is not 30 mm off center! You must look at the diagonal to determine the distance to the geometrical center of the face. so in the case I just described ti would be 22 mm from the center. (a2 + b2 = c2). Best regards! Nils

If you sign up, you get a persimmon wood, a mashie and 2 balata balls. @peterjones10925 жыл бұрын
With the 10mm high and 23mm toe strike being 25mm from centre, 5 times further from centre than the heel strike. Not sure the significance of this but it wasn’t 5 times a worse strike 🤷♂️
@Toemazz.R5 жыл бұрын
Peter Jones as Mark mentioned in the video because of his optimal attack angle and path, the higher toe strike is the sweetspot for him so instead of a worse strike it’s actually probably better compared to being 5 times worse (for him) 👍🏽
@peterjones10925 жыл бұрын
Thomas Reaney I understand how it works just highlighting that a strike in math terms that is 5 times worse isn’t in real life. Therefore not sure how the manufacturers can claim what they do.

Ignoring that a new driver every year is a little annoying I do like that Callaway are trying to improve by using a new way of building their clubs. The differences year on year are always very small but the point is that if you tweak every year then over a few years you get improvements. The brands that release drivers less often are also often the less innovative as they take that extra time to release a more complete product but you wonder if there weren't brands like Callaway or TM pushing everything (marketing as much as tech) then would equipment overall be as good as it is now.

I purchased a 2017 GBB Epic from the clearance rack at my local big box store a couple of months ago. While this club seems to have improved performance, it's not nearly enough to justify the massive price tag of upgrading, especially as a mid-to-high handicapper who won't really see any difference in performance.

I agree with other comments. Do we really need a new driver every year from these companies? Maybe if they brought one out say, every two years, they’d spend less on R&D and marketing and they wouldn’t cost nearly £500!! Just a mull. Keep up the good work chaps 👍

Don't tell anyone, but this new “Flash Face” design is actually the result of Callaway's new Supercomputer having a meltdown after more than 15,000 unsuccessful attempts at legally getting around the USGA restrictions on CT. Those markers at the top are never something you look straight down on when you swing so from your eye line, they are always off center. The USGA and R&A regulate COR in golf clubs to prevent manufacturers from making golf clubs that totally overwhelm golf courses with distance. The current COR limit in golf clubs is 0.830. Any club with a COR measuring higher than .830 is ruled non-conforming. The terms "coefficient of restitution" and "COR" came into the mainstream golf lexicon as ultra-thin-faced drivers began to proliferate in the early 2000s. An effect of the thin faces is known as the "spring-like effect" or "trampoline effect": The face of the driver depresses as the ball is struck, then rebounds, providing a little extra oomph to the shot. A driver that exhibits this property will have a very high COR. However, the governing bodies no longer use COR to regulate drivers-they instead use something called "characteristic time" or "CT." COR and CT measurements do track one another, however. This fact, combined with the fact that manufacturers all build drivers to max out the permitted amount of COR, has caused the term to lose some of its relevance. But fairway woods, hybrids, and irons are still regulated using COR measurements. In fact there are no new drivers and never will be any new drivers from anyone that will top what is out there now in terms of face hotness and off center hit forgiveness because every company has been at the limit for these performance factors for several years now.
@paulwags6625 жыл бұрын
Not true when it comes to forgiveness. That is what they are all aiming for since as you sad COR is set. So the great frontier be is distance/ direction retention on off center hits which is what they ate focusing on.

So you are paying 500 plus for marginal off center hit forgiveness.
